NAM disputes Groningen gas extraction earthquake damage claims

THURSDAY, APRIL 1, 2021 – 10:00

NAM, the Dutch gas concern responsible for gas extraction in Groningen, raised doubts about the level of damage claims and the home strengthening operation in the fracking earthquake zone in the province. In a statement, NAM said that a major part of the damages was wrongly attributed to earthquakes, and that the standards of the reinforcement project are far too strict, NOS reports.

According to NAM, the risks in the earthquake zone are grossly overestimated, and as a result, many homes will be reinforced with measures that far outweigh the risks, “for some buildings even by a factor of a thousand to ten thousand”. “This leads to unnecessary feelings of insecurity among residents and additional costs.” read more

Groningen Exxon/Shell gas field earthquakes rumble on

Screen Shot 2013-12-24 at 15.21.39The economic benefits of the gas produced by Groningen have been immense, but now some of the costs are becoming apparent. Rebuilding thousands of homes, and increasing the height of the dikes which protect Holland from flooding will be enormously costly – perhaps comparable to the Macondo disaster in the Gulf of Mexico that drove BP to the financial brink.

On Monday 16 December a Dutch public service TV channel, NCRV, aired a documentary about natural gas drilling in Northwest Groningen by NAM, a joint venture company owned by Royal Dutch Shell and ExxonMobil.

The drilling is causing increasingly violent earthquakes.

A former engineer predicted in October 2013 that major earthquakes will soon occur.

“It’s only a matter of time before people will be injured or even die because of the earthquakes that afflict North Groningen says Adriaan Houtenbos in the NRC Handelsblad today.” (Translation)

Royal Dutch Shell CO2 storage scheme

The residents of two small Dutch towns are to play host to an unconventional neighbour: massive quantities of carbon dioxide (CO2). Royal Dutch Shell and NAM, the Dutch national gas company, intend to conduct a pilot scheme to investigate CO2 storage. Where will they put it? Under the towns.
