Hurricanes leave behind £4bn bill for oil giants

Daily Telegraph: Hurricanes leave behind £4bn bill for oil giants

“Similar problems are likely to dent Shell’s third-quarter figures with production from the Gulf down from 450,000 boepd to 160,000 boepd because of the storms at the end of last month.”

The world’s biggest oil and gas companies are facing a $7.5billion (£4.3billion) bill from the hurricanes that lashed the Gulf of Mexico.

The news emerged as BP, the world’s number two oil and gas company, said the impact of hurricanes Rita and Katrina had knocked $700m (£400m) off its third-quarter profits.

Analysts at Wood MacKenzie estimated that 45m barrels of oil and 220billion cubic feet of gas, worth between $4billion and $5billion in lost revenues, had been “shut in” by the storms. read more

Militants threaten Nigerian oil stations after leader’s arrest

The Guardian (UK): Militants threaten Nigerian oil stations after leader’s arrest

“We will unleash upon the government and its cohorts violence and mayhem never before reported in the history of the Nigerian state…”

Saturday September 24, 2005

Jeevan Vasagar in Nairobi

A separatist militia threatening to spread “violence and mayhem” throughout Nigeria’s oil-producing delta has forced the closure of two oil installations and the evacuation of dozens of workers.

The US firm Chevron shut down a station pumping 19,000 barrels a day yesterday after being warned of an “imminent threat” from armed militants.

A day earlier more than 100 fighters stormed another Chevron oil platform, disarming government security personnel and shutting down the facility, which pumped around 8,000 barrels a day. Shell, which produces about half the oil from Nigeria, withdrew 50 workers from three facilities on Thursday, but output was maintained by a skeleton staff. The unrest adds to pressure on oil prices, already approaching historic highs because of Hurricane Katrina in the US. read more

Around the world, offshore oil and gas platforms are generally built to survive without serious damage a so-called 100-year storm – a hurricane so powerful that it typically occurs only once every hundred years.

Hurricane Ivan roared through the Gulf of Mexico a year ago, generating the highest waves ever recorded there in a storm considered likely to occur only once every 2,500 years. Given the scale of the hurricane, it was inevitable that it would wreak havoc in the gulf, America’s biggest energy-producing region, uprooting miles of underwater pipelines, destroying platforms and crimping production for months. read more

I pray for relatives and friends of the deceased and for the huge number of people who have lost everything and now find themselves living as refugees a long way from their homes.

There has been some criticism of the oil companies for giving alleged derisory donations to assist in the response to this unprecedented natural disaster in North America. I understand (correct me if I am wrong) that my former employer Shell has given $1 million USD. In view of recent publicly made allegations against Shell management that it has displayed racist policies towards its former employees in Malaysia (which I am sure must be unfounded), I would respectfully suggest that Shell could dispel any such notion by making a much more significant donation to the charities supporting the refugees, many of whom are impoverished. read more

Shell Oil is ramping up production from natural gas wells around Mobile Bay and along the south Texas coast in an effort to offset major losses from the rich fields off Louisiana, according to company officials.

But given the relatively small sprinkling of rigs off Alabama, and even fewer off the south Texas coast, it’s uncertain whether the effort would significantly ease a tightening supply.

About 89 percent of the Gulf’s daily oil production has been lost, and 79 percent of the natural gas output, according to the U.S. Minerals Management Service. For the first time since the 1970’s, gasoline lines reappeared yesterday in some corners of the country.

Three days after Hurricane Katrina dealt a devastating blow to the nation’s largest energy hub, the worst-case possibility was quickly becoming a reality: gasoline prices surging well above $3 a gallon, with some consumers complaining of price gouging; service stations in a handful of locations running out of gas; drivers rushing to fill their tanks, only to find themselves waiting in line with others. read more

Aug. 31 (Bloomberg) — Royal Dutch Shell Plc, Europe’s second-biggest oil company, said its Capline crude oil pipeline connected to Gulf of Mexico offshore production was shut because of power failures after Hurricane Katrina swept through the area.

“The Shell-operated Capline Pipeline system did not incur damage from Hurricane Katrina, but is currently down due to multiple pump stations that are without power,” Shell said in a statement on its Web site dated yesterday. read more
