Electric cars threaten Brunei plan for oil bonanza

by: : 8 Aug 2017

Mohammad Yasmin Umar, energy minister, told the FT that Brunei’s energy production could rise… by 2035 to as high as 800,000.  But he acknowledged this aim could be jeopardised by the world oil price depression — and by possible longer-term trends such as the electric car’s “takeover” from combustion-powered vehicles in rich countries. Brunei Shell Petroleum Company… did not respond to a request for comment on the minister’s remarks. FULL FT ARTICLE read more

A regular contributor, a retired Shell executive, having spotted the latest side bar feature on this website (focused on Shell’s relationship with the depraved Sultan of Brunei), drew my attention to the latest spectacular Brunei Royal Wedding.

It took place in the monarch’s lavish 1,788-room residential palace.”

Prince Abdul Malik, the Sultan’s son and second in line to inherit the throne, celebrated his wedding (picture immediately below) in what has been described as mind-boggling splendour read more

Shell CEO Ben van Beurden audience with corrupt despot, the Sultan of Brunei

By John Donovan

Royal Dutch Shell Chief Executive Ben van Beurden had “an audience” on Tuesday with the head of the corrupt, seedy Brunei Royal Family, the Sultan of Brunei, who once accepted a $500,000 wedding gift (bribe) from Royal Dutch Shell.

In April he went ahead, despite international opposition, with his plans to introduce a tough Islamic penal code that under Sharia law will include amputations.

Shell has always been willing to deal with dictators including Adolf Hitler, Muammar Gaddafi and General Sani Abacha. Profits first, ethics last. Shell remains willing to deal with the devil. read more

The Sultan of Brunei, an absolute monarch who pays for a garrison of British troops to be stationed is his oil rich nation, will on Thursday dismiss the concerns of human rights campaigners and start imposing sharia law. Many of the laws, which include the dismemberment of limbs and stoning to death, will apply to both Muslims and non-Muslims.

Shell, the Brunei Royal Family and Sharia Law

His Majesty the Sultan of Brunei meeting Malcolm (TFA) Brinded, Shell’s then Executive Director, Upstream International

By John Donovan

There may be some relief by Muslim employees of Shell Brunei at the news that “Brunei has postponed the introduction of tough Islamic criminal punishments that were due to begin on Tuesday.”

Fortunately for Shell, the Sharia code appears vague on the subject of corruption.

Shell enjoys a so called symbiotic relationship with the scandal-tainted Brunei Royal family. read more

Concern as Brunei brings in Islamic law with punishments including dismemberment of limbs and stoning to death

Screen Shot 2014-03-30 at 13.14.58Extracts from an article by Andrew Buncombe published 29 March 2014 by The Independent under the headline: Concern as Brunei brings in system of Islamic law with punishments that include the dismemberment of limbs and stoning to death

The Sultan of Brunei, one of the world’s wealthiest rulers and a close ally of Britain, will this week oversee his country’s transition to a system of Islamic law with punishments that include flogging, the dismemberment of limbs and stoning to death. The speech by the Sultan – who for many years was involved in a high-profile legal battle with his brother, a playboy accused of misappropriating £9bn of government assets and who reportedly owned a yacht called Tits – has had the impact of silencing many who might publicly speak out against the move. Royal Dutch Shell, an Anglo-Dutch multinational, also runs a major operation there as a joint venture with the Brunei government. read more
