Gulf of Mexico oil spill won’t stop Shell drilling in Alaska

DAILY TELEGRAPH

Royal Dutch Shell intends to push on with its plans for deepwater drilling off the coast of Alaska this summer, despite political hostility caused by BP’s catastrophic spill in US waters.

President Barack Obama has requested extra safety assurances about Shell’s plans and halted new exploration in some areas, after the explosion at BP’s well in the Gulf of Mexico three weeks ago.

But Shell yesterday told investors at its annual meeting in the Hague that it plans to press ahead.

“We won’t drill in Alaska if we can’t do so safely and responsibly,” said Peter Voser. chief executive. “The characteristics of the fields are different to those in the Gulf of Mexico – less deep and there is less pressure. We intend to drill this summer if allowed.” read more

Shell Arctic Drilling Plans: Email to Kim Murphy at LA Times

To our astonishment we discovered that a “Touch F*** All” policy was in place. Worse still, safety records were routinely falsified and repairs bodged.

Subject: What if an oil spill happened at an Arctic well?

Hello Kim

What your article does not mention is Shell’s notorious “Touch F*** All” safety culture in the North Sea oil rigs, which led to an explosion and deaths on the Brent Bravo platform.

Basically, production and profits were given a higher priority than the safety of offshore employees.

The truth was exposed by Bill Campbell, the HSE Group Auditor of Shell International.  This was his self-explanatory letter to UK Members of Parliament which led to a criminal investigation by Scottish Police and legal authorities currently underway. It would be equally relevant to substitute the Arctic Ocean for the North Sea. read more

Shell calls for Europe to act on gas

Published: April 23, 2010 at 10:32 AM

ARIS, April 23 (UPI) — Natural gas has a central role to play in the energy and environmental future for the European community, Shell officials said in France.

European geopolitics are influenced by regional natural gas supplies. The region, meanwhile, has adopted measures to reduce greenhouse gas emissions substantially by 2020.

Malcolm Brinded, executive director for upstream business at Royal Dutch Shell, told an audience at an international oil summit in Paris summit that Europe, however, “faces a natural gas puzzle.” read more

Shell sounds alarm over energy growth

CAIRO, April 22 (UPI) — The Middle East will struggle to keep up with rising demand even with “heavy investments” in conventional and alternative energy, Shell officials said in Cairo.

Malcolm Brinded, executive director for upstream business at Royal Dutch Shell, told an audience at the American University in Cairo that rising energy demand and increasing population levels are putting global energy supplies under pressure.

He pointed to estimates from the International Energy Agency that suggest global energy demand will double by 2050 in part because of economic growth in developing economies. read more

“We see global gas demand growing by at least 2 percent a year over some decades, so by 2030 we look at gas demand hitting 4.5 trillion cubic meters of gas per year,” Malcom Brinded told an oil conference. “That’s 50 percent up from today’s level.” read more

U.K. Parliament Bribery Bill sheiks Shell

On Thursday, the UK House of Commons passed the Bribery Bill, which would make it illegal for companies doing business in the U.K. to bribe government officials.

The U.K. measure goes further than the U.S. Foreign Corrupt Practices Act because the legislation, if passed by the House of Lords, will make it illegal to request or accept a bribe. Companies could also face prosecution for failure to prevent bribery by employees.

This development will be of interest to Shell in view of its key involvement in the so called “Scandal of the Century“, for which BAE Systems has recently paid nearly $500 million in fines. read more

Shell Blog comment on article “Shell International Upstream to Power Growth…”

I suggest that we from now on start every speech or statement of Brinded with “Once upon a time, long ago…..”

SHELL BLOG COMMENT BY Guest1 on the article Shell International Upstream to Power Growth….

Adding 600,000 bopd sounds a lot but will not be sufficient to bring back the production level from 3 to 3.5 mln bopd. The reason is very simple: the current production declines by 10-15% per annum, so in 2012 the existing fields will produce (optimistically speaking, we are all followers of Brinded) not more than 2.4 mln bopd. Adding 600,000 therefore merely keeps the production level constant. We all know that Brinded is so smart he thinks he can defeat laws of nature. But oilfields are very stubborn and may not do what Brinded wants them to do… So, he better starts adding a lot more bopd if he wants to reach his earlier stated goal of 5-6 mln bopd in 2013. Time is running out fast. read more

Aberdeen Shell jobs look safe in latest culling

Further 1,000 positions to be shed

By Keith Findlay
Published: 17/03/2010

SHELL jobs in the north-east look to have been spared the axe in the latest round of cuts at the oil and gas giant.

It emerged yesterday that a further 1,000 positions globally are going, on top of the 5,000 shed in 2009 and 1,000 the firm had previously flagged up for this year.

Shell would not say exactly where the latest cuts in its 101,000-strong worldwide workforce would be, but chief executive Peter Voser said the axe would fall mainly on downstream and corporate roles.

Aberdeen, where Shell employs about 1,800 people, is the hub for the firm’s UK upstream – exploration and production – activities and is, therefore, unlikely to see much of an impact. read more

Shell overhauls executive pay in response to shareholder revolt

Last year, Shell’s board suffered an embarrassing shareholder revolt over their pay packages, which awarded bonuses to executives who had failed to hit their targets.

Since then, the company has been consulting with major shareholders about more appropriate remuneration policies.

In a letter to investors , Hans Wijers, chairman of the remuneration committee, said the move would “better align remuneration policy with shareholder interests and long-term strategy”. read more

Total farce of Shell Managed Open Resourcing

John

I like to share this with you. The results of 15 years of complete mismanagement.

Shell has now degenerated so much that we have to endure nonsense like this. Brinded has always believed in ‘processes’ regardless of the impact on business (mostly negative, remember ‘Overpromise-Underdelivery’?). Because nobody has dared to fire him, he has been around for eons and so his band of followers has increased and invariably Shell has deteriorated from a first class and caring organisation to a computerlike organism.

Staff MUST apply in a process called MOR (Managed Open Resourcing). The idea behind the much hated Open Resourcing is to generate competition and transparency. But if you take away the critical control mechanisms (= checks and balances), as has been the case since about 10 years ago, you have a system that is open to abuse and very prone to nepotism and cronyism. read more

THE SHELL “SMART” HIGH COURT TRIAL

By John Donovan of royaldutchshellplc.com: Oct 2009

Some Shell employees may be puzzled why our leaflets are being distributed at Shell Centre a decade after a trial regarding the origin of the Shell SMART loyalty card had ended, supposedly in “stalemate”, with me withdrawing all allegations of impropriety against Shell in a so-called “joint statement”. In reality the “stalemate” announcement was a face-saving fabrication conjured up by Shell lawyers.

Shell settled the litigation in the midst of the cross-examination of a dishonest Shell manager AJL at the heart of all of our four High Court actions. Shell had already settled our first three claims. Scrutiny of his diaries and other documents released to us in discovery revealed that he was a disgruntled employee on the make. He had masterminded a corrupted tender process for our multi-partner loyalty card scheme, had stolen confidential IT property from numerous parties, including us, and funnelled them all to an agency with whom he had a close personal “private” relationship. read more

But now for once the big brain of Malcolm, the mother of all micro managers, starts to feel nervous since he realises that HR cannot cope with the enormous load. Even HR can do overpromise-underdelivery!!! read more

Shell Upstream Boss Malcolm Brinded: Mr Overpromise and Underdelivery

Slide21

COMMENTS BY “OUTSIDER”

(Please note some pdf links contain multi-page docs and may take a while to download)

The Bloomberg article of September 25th seems to echo a very familiar concept from the Watts/Enron era – promises, promises and more promises. But where is the additional production promised by Brinded repeatedly over the past few years?

A remarkably prescient presentation entitled “overpromise underdelivery” was published on this site a few years ago. We seem to be repeating the process. Shell is shedding staff precisely because it does not have enough projects to justify current staffing levels. In the medium term a lack of development projects can only lead to a decline in production. read more

Seeds of next Shell reserves scandal being sown

Shell Reserves Fraudster, Sir Phillip Watts

Shell Fraudster, Sir Phillip Watts

From a Shell Insider

Nice hoax on the Pectina Devastatis!

But do not forget it was true then and it still is true today! And history always repeats itself, also in Shell.

Remember the heady days in the early 2000s when Reservoir Engineers were deemed to be a bunch of overly conservative intellectuals and evil Watts and his bully boys were going to sort them out and teach them what ‘real’ business meant. The process of rewarding promise and penalising realism was implemented with great vigour. We all know what happened next. Watts fired in disgrace but with a handsome pension. Huge fines by the SEC etc. One would hope we had learned from this. But not so. Of late bad man Bichsel is sending out his hit squads to all operating units to sort out those same stupid Petroleum Engineers who are not increasing the reserves quick enough. read more

Anyone out there taking bets on how long Shell will exist?

Posting on Shell Blog by a Shell Insider (a reliable high level source known to us)

Having seen all the EC-1 and -2 appointments and from many discussions I have with colleagues, it has become clear to me that Voser and Brinded et all want to get rid of critical thinking people in general and Petroleum Engineers in particular, i.e. just the people who have know-how on essential matters such as reserves and production forecasting.

The reserves reporting is now solidly in the hands of lawyers so easy to manipulate for Brinded (above). The overoptimistic production forecasting, a great hobby of our beloved and surpreme leader in Upstream, will now go unchallenged by people with genuine know-how. read more

The false bravado of Shell Ethics Chief Richard Wiseman

John Donovan

In an email dated 11 November 2005, Shell International General Counsel Richard Wiseman (now the Chief Ethics & Compliance Officer of Royal Dutch Shell Plc) dismissed our website in the following words:

“The extraordinary tolerance shown to your internet activities ought to demonstrate better than anything else the fact that we are uninterested in, and unmoved by, your current activities.”

Wiseman’s bravado was undermined by the fact that we already had evidence to the contrary from an email about us that he sent on 24 June 2004 to Shell CEO Jeroen van der Veer and his fellow Executive director, Malcolm Brinded. Wiseman informed them that he was contacting Sir Mark Moody-Stuart (a former Shell Group Chairman) about us. Wiseman’s email (supplied to us by a high level insider source) also confirmed that Shell “PX” was briefed and ready to react behind the scenes to our activities. read more

Heavyweights of the black stuff size up the competition

Times Online

September 10, 2009

David Wighton: Business Editor’s Commentary

Size matters. In the oil industry, your worth is measured in hundreds of millions of barrels and yesterday BP and BG Group were standing at the bar sizing up each other’s discoveries.

Last week, BP was crowing about Tiber, an offshore discovery at record depths beneath the Gulf of Mexico, with between 4 and 6 billion barrels of oil in place. Yesterday, BG was yesterday claiming that Guara, another deepwater prospect, this time off the coast of Brazil, was bigger. read more

Massive Shell Job Cuts, Again

By John Donovan

There is nothing new about Shell making massive job cuts.

It happened most recently, a decade ago, under Shell Group Chairman Mark Moody-Stuart. In those days the panic driven restructuring was called “Transformation”, whereas under Peter Voser, it’s called Transition 2009. Basically the same unpalatable medicine, under a different name. Unfortunately, then, as now, the doctor prescribing the medicine, benefits financially from the treatment. Hence the danger of an overdose. read more

Documents reveal orchestrated campaign by ministers, mandarins and royalty

Terry Macalister

The Observer, Sunday 30 August 2009

Marsa El-Brega was once a tiny Libyan fishing village on the most southerly tip of the Mediterranean – now it is a thriving port handling 300 ocean-going ships a year and, with the help of Shell, is poised to become one of the world’s key energy terminals, capable of exporting huge quantities of gas to Britain.

The Anglo-Dutch oil company is currently upgrading the liquefied natural gas (LNG) from 500,000 tonnes a year to 3.2m and has just drilled the first of a dozen planned wells. These are the fruits of a historic visit in March 2004 by Tony Blair but also part of a closely orchestrated campaign by British ministers and Big Oil as documents seen by the Observer reveal. read more

Secret documents uncover UK’s interest in Libyan oil

Negotiations fuel rumours of commercial deal behind Megrahi’s release

Terry Macalister

The Observer, Sunday 30 August 2009

Libya has been courted by Prince Charles, government ministers and Foreign Office mandarins on a dozen or more occasions in pursuit of lucrative oil and gas contracts.

Documents obtained by the Observer show ministers and senior civil servants met Shell to discuss the company’s oil interests in Libya on at least 11 occasions and perhaps as many as 26 times in less than four years.

Foreign secretary David Miliband, the former Labour leader Lord Kinnock and even Prince Charles were involved in the meetings with Shell about its business in Libya or Egypt. read more

Scottish Authorities deepen investigation into alleged Shell Corruption

By John Donovan

Preventable Deaths on Brent Bravo North Sea Production Platform

Following an investigation by Grampian Police into allegations of corruption involving Shell and the UK Health & Safety Executive, relating to the Brent Bravo scandal, a report was submitted to the Procurator Fiscal, whose officials have subsequently been carrying out further enquiries.

Reliable information reached us today that meticulous enquiries are continuing and deepening.

The allegations were made by Bill Campbell, the highly respected retired former HSE Group Auditor of Shell International. He has supplied extensive evidence to the Scottish legal authorities including taped conversations with very senior people at Shell.

Shell’s Malcolm Brinded – lustful friend of Libya

Malcolm Brinded, Royal Dutch Shell Executive director of Upstream International

By John Donovan

In view of current events, it is timely to consider the real motives of the UK government’s complicity in the release of the Lockerbie bomber – a development said to be “casting a long shadow over relations between Britain and United States, where senior figures in the Obama Administration have voiced dismay over the Government’s failure to take a stand.”

The White House condemned the decision by Scottish authorities to release al-Megrahi as “outrageous and disgusting”. A senior US official said: “The UK has been extraordinarily silent on this issue.” read more
