Debt Reduction, Cost Discipline Core Challenges for new Shell CFO

By SARAH KENT: Dec 15, 2016 8:33 am ET

Royal Dutch Shell PLC’s new finance chief has two big challenges: a mountain of debt and the pressure to keep down costs.

The British-Dutch oil giant on Thursday said its new chief financial officer will be Jessica Uhl, who is currently the top finance official for one of Shell’s most important units: Integrated Gas.

The BG merger bolstered Shell’s leading position in global natural-gas markets and led to the creation of the gas unit where Ms. Uhl worked. It also caused Shell’s net debt to balloon to $86.63 billion at the end of the third quarter… read more

Royal Dutch Shell – Income Investors Should Look Elsewhere

Casey Hoerth: Dec. 14, 2016 11:09 AM ET

Summary

Shell plans on between $25 billion and $30 billion in capex next year, with flexibility to the downside.

I do not expect Shell to achieve cash flow balance in 2016, even with asset sales.

I continue to recommend other energy companies over Royal Dutch Shell, until either oil prices recover more or until Shell does something else to achieve balance.

Over the course of 2016 I haven’t recommended much when it comes buying to upstream or integrated oil companies. The reason was that I felt many still weren’t doing enough to balance their money coming in versus money going out. The CEO of one of my favorite companies, in their latest analyst day, recently quipped that energy companies couldn’t afford to wait to be ‘bailed out’ by higher oil prices. read more

by Mary MorleyWednesday, 14 Dec 2016, 15:08 GMT

SPONSORED Q&A with Ben van Beurden, CEO, Royal Dutch Shell

By ENERGY VISIONS12/14/16, 9:49 AM CET

A lot has changed in the year since a global agreement to limit carbon emissions was reached in Paris last December. Political earthquakes have taken place in the UK, US and Italy – and Germany and France could be next. But despite the political upheavals, many business leaders say the commitment to fight climate change remains unaltered.

So how can leaders in the public and private sector make sure the goals of the Paris Accord stay on track? Energy Visions spoke with Ben van Beurden, CEO of Royal Dutch Shell, to get his take on these thorny issues. read more

Shell makes deepwater breakthrough in Malaysia

THE HAGUE, Netherlands, Dec. 14 (UPI) — Tapping the deep-water oil prospects off the coast of Malaysia is indicative of the confidence of growth from those basins, Royal Dutch Shell said.

Shell said it started oil production from the Malikai facility about 60 miles off the coast of Malaysia. It’s the company’s second such project in Malaysia and the first of its kind for Shell outside the U.S. waters of the Gulf of Mexico.

Andy Brown, a director for exploration and production for Shell, said in a statement the start of operations in deep Malaysian waters marks a milestone for the company. read more

After Alaska flop, Shell’s search for oil moves closer to home

By Ron Bousso | LONDON

In the waters off Malaysia, Royal Dutch Shell (RDSa.L) is finding gas quickly and cheaply to replenish depleting fields where only a few years ago geologists had lost hope of discovering any new reserves.

The Anglo-Dutch group is combining the latest technology with the wisdom of industry veterans to unlock new oil and gas deposits where it already operates, usually within 20 km (12 miles) of existing platforms.

The result has been a string of finds which, while modest in size, can generate cash rapidly to suit an era of drastically reduced exploration budgets across the energy industry. read more

Shell takes aim at British and German offshore wind deals

By Karolin Schaps | LONDON

Royal Dutch Shell (RDSa.L) wants to buy into the British and German offshore wind markets as it attempts to shift its business away from fossil fuels.

Immediate opportunities in the world’s biggest offshore wind markets will be through buying stakes in leases, rather than building new projects, Dorine Bosman, business operations manager for Shell’s wind business, told Reuters on Tuesday.

The world’s second-biggest oil major on Monday won a contract to build 700 megawatts (MW) in offshore wind capacity off the Dutch coast together with consortium partners Eneco, Van Oord and Mitsubishi/DGE. read more

Shell cost-cutting plan will undermine the welfare of its pensioners

By John Donovan

Basically, Shell is intending to scrap the network of 45 Pensioner Liaison Representatives established over 40 years ago, who currently represent 28,000 Shell UK pensioners. Although Shell still rakes in billions of dollars in annual profits, the reason given is cost-cutting arising from the BG takeover and the low price of oil.

The Nigerian King and a very brazen bid to squeeze millions out of Shell over pollution

Residents of the communities in south-east Nigeria remember clearly the day oil giant Shell first arrived in the 1950s.

Children could hear the rumble of the trucks from a distance, so they’d wave at the drivers as they passed.

It still happened when King Emere Godwin Bebe Okpabi, community leader of the Ogale community in Ogoniland, was growing up in the 1960s.

The region, largely marshland and swamps, was poor but the British firm, with its modern technology and skilled engineers, seemed to represent a new era of prosperity.  read more

Oil prices shed early gains amid doubts over OPEC output cut

OPEC, U.S. begin ‘cat and mouse’ oil game as producers pounce on hedges

Shell Makes Cuts to Boost Returns

Allen Good7 December, 2016

With the BG acquisition in the books, Shell (RDSB) is embarking on the necessary steps to compete in a world of $60 a barrel oil.

Like the rest of the integrated group, Shell is working to reduce its cost base, which has become bloated during the past five years, by reducing headcount and improving its supply chain.

The integration of BG is integral to Shell’s efforts, as it holds the potential for $4.5 billion of cost-reduction synergies. Furthermore, the addition of BG’s low-cost production reduces Shell’s per-barrel operating cost, which ranked among the highest in its peer group. In total, Shell aims to reduce operating cost by 20% from 2014 levels by the end of 2016, with further reductions possible in later years. read more

Today I’m looking at the critical reasons to sell out of Royal Dutch Shell (LSE: RDSB).

A drop in the ocean

The oil sector’s major players breathed a huge sigh of relief last week after OPEC — responsible for four-tenths of the world’s oil supply — confounded the expectations of many and agreed to cut its output.

Saudi Arabia brokered a deal that will see production fall by 1.2m barrels per day, to 32.5m barrels beginning in January. The news prompted Brent oil to top the $55 per barrel marker for the first time since the summer of 2016. read more

Norway’s oil and gas safety body said today it had given Shell permission to expand its gas plant at Nyhamna.

The facility has been processing gas from the Ormen Lange field in the Norwegian Sea since 2003.

It will now be expanded to take in gas from the Polarled pipeline, which connects the Aasta Hansteen field to the Norwegian gas transport system.

Shell wants to raise its production capacity to 84million standard cubic metres of gas per day from 70million. read more

Shell is reported to be in talks to sells its stake in an Irish gas field to an Australian infrastructure fund.

Macquarie is understood to have approached the oil and gas giant over its 45% stake in Corrib, valuing it at around £1billion.

If a deal is struck, the sale will be part of Shell’s plan to offload $30billion of assets in the wake of its mega-merger with BG Group earlier this year.

It is uncertain what would happen to the operatorship of the field which started pumping gas at the end of last year. Other stakeholders in the field include Statoil and Canada’s Vermillion Energy. read more

Shell’s Woodside stake sale on cards as oil prices rally

screen-shot-2016-12-04-at-19-42-42

BRIDGET CARTERMergers & Acquisitions Editor Sydney: December 5, 2016

Following Archer Daniels Midland’s sale of its GrainCorp stake on Friday, the next big block trade to watch out for is a $3 billion-odd sale by Shell out of Woodside Petroleum.

Shell has an interest of close to 14 per cent in the business, and the oil price rally last week that triggered a run on Woodside’s shares has many watching the situation.

In 2014, Shell sold a 19 per cent interest in Woodside for $41.35 per share through Citi and Goldman Sachs, and four years earlier, it offloaded a 10 per cent stake at $42.23 in a deal underwritten by UBS. read more

Shell has launched an investigation after it was forced to shut down and evacuate personnel from its Shearwater platform in the North Sea.

The oil major was drilling, what was thought to an exploration well, when the activity triggered an alarm.

Shell decided to evacuate all non-essential personnel and shut down operations.

A spokeswoman said: “Shell UK can confirm that production on our Shearwater platform was shut down on the evening of Friday 2nd December as a precaution due to an alarm being triggered during work on a new well. There has been no loss of containment. The coastguard and regulator were informed and the situation is being closely monitored. A precautionary downman took place on Saturday returning 62 non-essential personnel safely to Aberdeen. The platform remains shutdown in the meantime.” read more
