BOSSES’ SOARING PAY IS SLAMMED

Shell is often at odds with institutional investors over the generous pay packages it gives to its executives, such as boss Peter Voser, who last year took home £4.6 million in pay and bonuses.

By Tracey Boles and Geoff Ho: Sunday May 15,2011

THE pay of top earners is spiralling out of control, a high-level report will warn tomorrow, as investors prepare to tackle three of Britain’s biggest companies over excessive remuneration.

The independent inquiry into high pay across both the public and private sectors, says that it is climbing “at an alarming rate”.

The High Pay Commission will also warn in its report, out tomorrow, that Britain is on course for levels of inequality not seen since Victorian times. read more

Shell, EPA Near a Deal on Arctic Offshore Drilling Project

By GABRIEL NELSON of Greenwire

Published: May 13, 2011

U.S. EPA’s top air pollution official said today that the agency is close to an agreement with Royal Dutch Shell PLC over an air permit for the oil giant’s Arctic drilling project, which has faced years of setbacks.

Shell was planning to start drilling exploratory wells this summer until a ruling by EPA’s Environmental Appeals Board sent the project’s air permit back to federal regulators.

The company, which has spent more than $3.5 billion over the past five years on leases and development, decided to wait another year. Yesterday, it unveiled its plan to start drilling as many as three wells in the Chukchi Sea in July 2012 (see related story). read more

ROYAL DUTCH SHELL PRIVACY INJUNCTIONS

By John Donovan

Twitter is currently flooded with people trying to identity parties who have obtained Super-injunctions in an attempt to hide embarrassing information from public scrutiny.

It is not widely known that Royal Dutch Shell has been a trailblazer in using draconian litigation to silence a conscience driven whistleblower who objected to Shell defrauding its shareholders and recklessly putting employees lives at risk.

In this case, it was a multinational oil giant trying to keep the lid on a potentially highly damaging story.

Shell Says Eliminating Oil Tax Breaks Will Affect Supply, Prices

May 12, 2011 9:00 A.M. ET

By Tennille Tracy Of DOW JONES NEWSWIRES

WASHINGTON (Dow Jones)–As Democrats look to repeal tax breaks given to the oil and gas industry, Royal Dutch Shell PLC (RDSA, RDSA.LN, RDSB, RDSB.LN) President Marvin Odum said in congressional testimony Thursday that lawmakers may think “there is something to gain by taking more from a few,” but that they should consider the effects of higher taxes “on both supply and price” of oil.

Instead of eliminating the tax breaks, as House and Senate Democrats are proposing, Odum encourages lawmakers to expand domestic oil production to combat higher gasoline prices. read more

U.S. Approves Shell Plan to Drill in Gulf of Mexico

By RYAN TRACY

WASHINGTON—The U.S. approved a Royal Dutch Shell PLC plan to drill for oil in five locations deep under the Gulf of Mexico.

The Shell proposal is the second deep-water exploration plan approved in the Gulf since the U.S. government lifted a moratorium on deep-water drilling in October. The moratorium was imposed following the BP PLC oil spill in April 2010. At least six other deep-water plans are pending for the Gulf.

Companies apply for permits to drill after receiving approval for an exploration plan. read more

Shell Oil Companies to Pay $2.2 Million to Resolve Allegations of Royalty Underpayments from Federal Lands

Department of Justice

Office of Public Affairs: Tuesday, May 10, 2011

WASHINGTON – Shell Oil Company and other Shell affiliates have agreed to pay the United States $2.2 million to resolve claims that the companies violated the False Claims Act by knowingly underpaying royalties owed on natural gas produced from federal leases, the Justice Department announced today. Shell Oil Company is the U.S.-based subsidiary of Royal Dutch Shell, a multinational oil company, and is a leading producer of oil and natural gas.

Congress has authorized federal and Indian lands to be leased for the production of natural gas in exchange for the payment of royalties on the value of the gas that is produced.   Each month companies are required to report to the U.S. Department of the Interior (DOI) the amount of royalty that is due. This settlement resolves claims by the United States that the Shell defendants improperly deducted from royalty values the cost of boosting gas up to pipeline pressures, and improperly reported processed gas as unprocessed gas to reduce royalty payments.

WASHINGTON–(ENEWSPF)–May 10, 2011.  Shell Oil Company, Shell Offshore Inc., Shell Frontier Oil & Gas Inc., and Shell Western Exploration and Production (Shell Defendants) have agreed to pay the United States $2.2 million plus interest to resolve claims that the companies violated the False Claims Act by knowingly underpaying royalties owed on natural gas produced from Federal leases, the Department of the Interior (DOI) and the U.S. Department of Justice announced today.

The agreement was reached among the Shell Defendants, the Department of the Interior through its Office of Natural Resources Revenue (ONRR), and the Department of Justice. The total payment, including interest, is $2,287,145.74.

Shell Oil, affiliates to pay $2.2M to settle allegations they underpaid royalties owed to US

By Associated Press, Published: May 10

WASHINGTON — The Justice Department says Shell Oil Co. and affiliates will pay the government $2.2 million to settle allegations that the companies underpaid royalties on natural gas from federal land. The action marks the latest agreement in a lawsuit against various oil and gas companies that has resulted in $233 million in payments by the defendants.

In an earlier part of the case, Shell paid $56 million to settle claims that it had underpaid royalties on natural gas in the Gulf of Mexico. Tuesday’s settlement resolved claims on Shell’s onshore leases. Regarding the $2.2 million, the government said Shell had underpaid royalties by improperly reporting processed gas as unprocessed gas and by deducting from royalty values the cost of boosting gas up to pipeline pressure. read more

Shell Hopeful on Arctic Permits After U.S. Meeting

Tuesday May 10, 2011

By GUY CHAZAN AND STEPHEN POWER

The White House is ratcheting up its involvement in a looming decision on whether to grant Royal Dutch Shell PLC permission to drill for oil off the coast of Alaska, raising the company’s hopes that it can secure the necessary permits for an expensive and controversial project.

In an interview, Shell’s U.S. president, Marvin Odum, said a meeting last week with senior Environmental Protection Agency officials and top energy aides to President Barack Obama left him more confident Shell would get all the permits it needs to start drilling in the Arctic seas off Alaska next year. The drilling plans have faced fierce opposition from environmental and some indigenous Alaskan groups and, a senior administration official noted, must still secure the approval of multiple federal agencies. read more

Shale gas drilling ‘contaminates drinking water’

Rising prices has led to a sharp increase in shale gas extraction schemes

By Mark Kinver Science and environment reporter, BBC News

Shale gas drilling operations increase the risk of nearby drinking water becoming contaminated with methane, a study has suggested.

Researchers found, on average, methane concentrations 17 times above normal in samples taken near drilling sites.

Growing demand for energy has led to a sharp increase in shale gas extraction around the globe, prompting concerns about the impact of the technology.

The findings appear in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. read more

WASHINGTON — Linking two of the politically volatile issues of the moment, Senate Democrats say they will move forward this week with a plan that would eliminate tax breaks for big oil companies and divert the savings to offset the deficit.

With high gas prices and rising federal deficits in the political spotlight, senior Democrats believe that tying the two together will put pressure on Senate Republicans to support the measure or face a difficult time explaining their opposition to voters whose family budgets are being strained by fuel prices. read more

Shell Says Alaskan Oil Spill Wouldn’t Top 9,468 Barrels a Day

Royal Dutch Shell Plc (RDSA) would spill no more than 9,468 barrels a day in case of a blowout at proposed wells off Alaska’s Arctic coast, according to drilling plan filed with U.S. regulators.

Shell, blocked since 2007 from developing its Alaska leases, is seeking U.S. approval to drill as many as four wells in the Beaufort Sea — two in 2012 and two in 2013. The volume the wells would discharge in a worst case varies, depending on the well, the Hague-based company said in a plan obtained today. read more

A new battle between environmentalists and Big Oil over drilling in the Arctic was triggered today when Shell unveiled “risky” plans for the Beaufort Sea while a Cairn Energy rig set sail for Greenland.

Shell, Europe’s largest oil group, has submitted plans to the US government for permission to drill 10 exploration wells in the Beaufort and Chukchi seas off the north coast of Alaska in 2012 and 2013.

Previous plans to start this summer were halted first by the moratorium imposed after the Deepwater Horizon disaster last April and then by a ruling from the Environmental Protection Agency. But Shell said it was now confident that it could offer regulators the reassurances that should enable it to proceed with a programme said to have cost it $2bn to lease the acreage and possibly an additional $4bn in planning. read more
