Colombia’s state oil company Ecopetrol and multinational Shell have signed a contract to explore jointly the Caño Sur block in Colombia’s Llanos Orientales region, Ecopetrol said in a statement.
The block measures 653,662ha and is southeast of the city of Villavicencio.
State hydrocarbons regulator ANH approved the contract and each company will control a 50% stake in the block.
Ecopetrol will operate the block during the exploratory stage, according to the statement.
Seismic information will first be collected and an exploratory well will be drilled in 2008, according to the statement.
The activities are slated to begin in the first quarter of 2008, an Ecopetrol spokesperson told BNamericas.
“Shell had worked in Colombia before, but it has been 10 years since they worked in exploration and seven since they were involved in production,” the official said.
“Shell had been the only top oil company that was not operating in Colombia. BP is here, as is Exxon and Chevron,” the official said.
Shell sold in 2005 its service stations in Colombia to Brazil’s Petrobras.
The Llanos Orientales region is the most productive hydrocarbons area in Colombia, according to the statement.

Royal Dutch Shell conspired directly with Hitler, financed the Nazi Party, was anti-Semitic and sold out its own Dutch Jewish employees to the Nazis. Shell had a close relationship with the Nazis during and after the reign of Sir Henri Deterding, an ardent Nazi, and the founder and decades long leader of the Royal Dutch Shell Group. His burial ceremony, which had all the trappings of a state funeral, was held at his private estate in Mecklenburg, Germany. The spectacle (photographs below) included a funeral procession led by a horse drawn funeral hearse with senior Nazis officials and senior Royal Dutch Shell directors in attendance, Nazi salutes at the graveside, swastika banners on display and wreaths and personal tributes from Adolf Hitler and Reichsmarschall, Hermann Goring. Deterding was an honored associate and supporter of Hitler and a personal friend of Goring.
Deterding was the guest of Hitler during a four day summit meeting at Berchtesgaden. Sir Henri and Hitler both had ambitions on Russian oil fields. Only an honored personal guest would be rewarded with a private four day meeting at Hitler’s mountain top retreat.
