Huge public pressure forced Shell to lift an injunction

FROM OUR SHELL NEWS ARCHIVE OCTOBER 2005

The Guardian (UK): Don’t be defeatist: the power of protest is alive and well

“…in Ireland last week huge public pressure forced Shell to lift an injunction which had seen five anti-pipeline farmers jailed for 94 days.”

Friday 7 October 2005

The government cannot stifle dissent, say Helen Steel and Dave Morris

George Monbiot looked at some of the wide range of repressive measures increasingly being used to undermine the public’s right to protest (Protest is criminalised and the huffers and puffers say nothing, October 4). The government is exploiting every opportunity to extend its powers over us all. Its aim is to try to protect the status quo so that those who have wealth and power can continue to dominate our world, untroubled by anyone fighting back. read more

Shell machine remains stuck in Mayo

COMMENT FROM A REGULAR CONTRIBUTOR:

SHELL MACHINE REMAINS STUCK IN MAYO…

The question surely is whether the Mayo is (S)Hellman’s, and whether Shell has enough demulsifier to disperse it…

(Oil mixed with water forms an emulsion which is physically and chemically similar to mayonnaise – think of the off-white globules that are formed by oil slicks)

Efforts to move a jack-knifed 160-ton truck carrying machinery for a controversial gas project are farcical, campaigners have claimed.

As the 40m vehicle continues to block a road in Co Mayo, protesters against Shell’s Corrib scheme said it will take a miracle to move it.

One of the Rossport Five, Willie Corduff, was arrested earlier today during protests over traffic disruption since the truck got stuck near the Glenamoy Bridge in Erris yesterday morning.

Mr Corduff was one of five men who spent 94 days in jail in 2005 after refusing to agree not to protest against the project. read more

The Guardian: Shell meets its match in the Rossport Five

FROM OUR JULY 2005 SHELL NEWS ARCHIVE…

The Guardian: Shell meets its match in the Rossport Five

“Suddenly, the issue became one of the biggest news stories of the year and, as the Irish Examiner called it, “a major public relations disaster for the Shell corporation”: “The “Rossport Five” were jailed at the specific request of the company, which had obtained compulsory purchase orders for the land in question – the first time in Irish history that such an order was granted to a private company. The five will remain in jail until they undertake not to obstruct the company.”: “Shell officials misjudged the situation…”: “July has seen huge rallies in support of the men in Co Mayo and in Dublin, the picketing of Shell garages nationwide, and round-the-clock blockades of the refinery construction site.”

Friday July 29, 2005

The residents of the tiny village of Rossport, in the north-west corner of County Mayo on Ireland’s Atlantic coast, have been up in arms for almost five years now. They have spent that time campaigning against a proposal by the petroleum giant Shell to lay a pipeline through their community to carry untreated gas from beneath the sea to a refinery 5.5 miles inland. Their cause secured little or no coverage in the national press until, at the end of June, five of them were jailed for refusing Shell access to their land to begin work on the pipeline. read more

Madam, – The continuing and unhappy imprisonment of a group of protesters from Co Mayo who seek to have Shell prevented from high-pressure gas pipeline construction draws attention to another matter of enormous importance to the people and economy of this island.

I refer to the agreement, drawn up years back, between the then Haughey government and international oil companies, regulating the sale of prospecting rights, control, development and ensuing profits of the oil and gas resources off our western coast. read more

VICTORY; Shell Halts Pipeline As Minister Orders Safety Review

FROM OUR JULY 2005 SHELL NEWS ARCHIVE…

Daily Mirror (UK): VICTORY; Shell Halts Pipeline As Minister Orders Safety Review

“The energy giant has been forced by the Government to back down in the row over the Corrib gas pipeline that saw five farmers jailed for the past two weeks.”

Thursday 14 July 2005

SHELL last night suspended all work on a controversial pipeline amid fears it may be risking the lives of the local community.

The energy giant has been forced by the Government to back down in the row over the Corrib gas pipeline that saw five farmers jailed for the past two weeks.

The Mayo Five – Philip McGrath, Willie Corduff, Vincent McGrath, Brendan Philbin and Micheal O’Seighin – were imprisoned for contempt of court.

They ignored a High Court ruling ordering them not to block the construction of the pipeline on their land. read more

Shell puts extra €90m into Irish subsidiary

The Irish Times – Monday, January 23, 2012

GORDON DEEGAN

OIL AND GAS multinational Shell has injected €90 million into its Irish subsidiary to deal with the spiralling costs of the Corrib gas field project.

Documents filed with the Companies’ Registration Office show that the global group has pumped the extra money into Shell Ireland.

The Irish company confirmed yesterday that the 5km onshore gas pipeline to bring gas from the offshore Corrib field to the market will not be complete until the second half of 2014.

The Corrib gas partners, Shell, Statoil and Canadian-owned Vermillion are now nine years behind the initial target to start generating revenues from the field. read more

Irish Examiner: Pipeline controversy – Dempsey giving mixed messages

Irish Examiner: Pipeline controversy – Dempsey giving mixed messages

Wednesday 3 August 2005

The decision by the Minister for the Marine Noel Dempsey, to allow Shell Ireland to commence work on the 75km pipeline, part of its development of the Corrib gasfield, will hardly do anything to defuse the ill-feeling which the company has caused locally.

It also seems somewhat ambiguous for him to order the dismantling of a section of onshore pipeline for which approval had not been given, while giving the go-ahead for the offshore section, as he did yesterday.

Local objectors have expressed their dismay at the minister’s rather belated display of authority on foot of the company’s breach in relation to the onshore pipeline. Shell E&P Ireland took it for granted that they could do undertake the work with impunity and went ahead without permission. read more

THE people of Mayo know all about boycotts, having coined the word in 1880 following a famous confrontation with Captain Charles Cunningham Boycott, a hated land agent for Lord Erne. Boycott, acting on behalf of the absentee landlord, refused to accept reduced rent from tenants as proposed by the Land League. The locals responded by shunning Boycott, refusing to work for him or serve him in the shops.

Today, more than a century later, a small number of locals and opportunistic politicians accompanied by the usual rag-tag of protesters, have decided that Shell, the oil multinational, is the modern-day equivalent of Lord Erne. Some are even trying to punish Shell by encouraging the public to give the company’s Irish interests Boycott-syle treatment. The company might have an earl on its board but with quarterly profits of more than €3.8 billion we don’t imagine the top dogs at Shell’s Dutch headquarters are quaking at the prospect. read more

I refer to the agreement, drawn up years back, between the then Haughey government and international oil companies, regulating the sale of prospecting rights, control, development and ensuing profits of the oil and gas resources off our western coast. read more

Mayo is a hotbed of political rivalry. This has been helped in no small part by the David-and-Goliath battle between local landowners and fuel giant Shell over the safety of the gas pipeline it is building in Rossport in the north-west of the county.

Protest rallies held yesterday in Dublin and across Mayo against the jailing of five Mayo farmers for obstructing Shell’s pipeline are providing opposition candidates with an invaluable early election platform. The five are now in their third week in prison. read more

Labour Party leader Pat Rabbitte today called Shell on to waive the injunction against the ‘Rossport Five’ by lifting a High Court injunction against them.

The five Mayo men have spent a month in prison for blocking the construction of an offshore pipeline near their home.

However, Communications Minister Noel Dempsey said yesterday that Shell may have breached the terms laid down by the Government when granting permission for the project.

“In light of yesterday’s statement by the minister that the energy giant may have breached the terms of the permission given for developing the pipeline, things should be resolved by Shell going to court next week to have the injunction lifted,” said Mr Rabbitte. read more

Shell E&P Ireland (SEPIL) is in ongoing negotiations to try to get the personnel involved in the Corrib gas project back to work.

In the region of 350 workers employed in various aspects of the project have not been working since supporters of the Rossport 5 mounted a protest at Bellanaboy on Monday, July 4 last.

A spokesperson for Shell said its priority was to ensure those workers could return to work imminently. He pointed out that while Shell has offered to cease all works on the onshore pipeline there are still many other aspects to the Corrib gas project that can proceed. The construction of the gas terminal itself is one such aspect. read more

The move is part of a campaign by local residents against the construction of a gas terminal and high-pressure pipeline in north Co Mayo.

Five of the residents have been in jail for more than three weeks for breaching an injunction ordering them not to obstruct work on the pipeline, which is being laid on their land.

Irish Independent: Council uproar over gas pipe motion

Tuesday 19 July 2005

IN a dramatic twist at the end of a marathon Mayo Co Council meeting last night, the Cathaoirleach, Henry Kenny of Fine Gael overturned an earlier, unopposed motion calling on Shell to process the gas from the Corrib field offshore.

But later the proposer of the motion, Fianna Fail Cllr Tim Quinn insisted that his motion stood and he will be considering the legal implications of the Cathaoirleach’s call.

Four hours after Erris-based Cllr Quinn had proposed the call for Shell to process the gas offshore, and the motion had been seconded, another Erris-based councillor, Gerry Coyle of Fine Gael sought clarification as to what motions had been agreed earlier concerning the Rossport Five. read more
