Malcolm Brinded

Whistleblower accuses Shell Executive Director, Malcolm Brinded

“Van de Veer was in a tricky situation. The Shell reputation was already in the gutter after the reserves debacle and Brinded was the white knight in shining armour who was to help in the recovery process.”

Introduction by John Donovan

Former Shell International HSE Group Auditor, Bill Campbell (above right), provides more information about the background to his career with Shell and why he blew the whistle on the Brent Bravo scandal.

By Bill Campbell

I left Shell in 2002 for health reasons and was granted VS on grounds of partial incapacity. During my 24 years with Shell I was promoted regularly and held senior positions. During that career I was never subject to any disciplinary action for wrongdoing or poor performance. read more

Is Shell CEO Voser jinxed by the famous Brinded spell?

POSTING ON SHELL BLOG 2 FEBRUARY 2012 BY ” AN OBSERVER OF SHELL”

Is Voser now also being jinxed by the famous Brinded spell?

This decent and down to earth Swiss financeman is trying to tell the world that Shell will increase production from North Sea fields by extending the life of these fields (Sky Sunrise interview).

I am taking bets with some friends this will not happen. All observable actions by Shell is that they are retrenching from the North Sea. Voser emphasised that there will be a lot of job creation in the UK….. Now, where have we heard this before????

And he says (Bloomberg story):
‘Shell will increase production to about 4 million barrels of oil equivalent a day in 2017-2018. Last March, it said daily output would rise to 3.5 million barrels this year and 3.7 million barrels by 2014?.

Federal Government’s total dependence on Shell Nigeria Exploration and Production Company (SNEPCo) and its parent company, Royal Dutch Shell Plc, for the clean-up of the recent oil spill in Bonga deepwater oil field has exposed the weaknesses of Nigeria’s regulatory agencies – National Oil Spill Detection and Response Agency (NOSDRA) and the Department of Petroleum Resources (DPR), in carrying out their statutory functions. Shell Says Exports, Truck Fuel Among Options for U.S. Shale Gas

By Eduard Gismatullin – Dec 7, 2011 12:01 AM GMT

Royal Dutch Shell Plc (RDSA), Europe’s largest energy producer, is weighing options for rising North American natural-gas output including exports and making liquid fuels, Chief Executive Officer Peter Voser said.

Shell will double North American gas production in the next three years to the equivalent of 400,000 barrels of oil a day as output from shale deposits rises, Voser said in an interview. Shell may channel gas into chemical production, an export project in Canada, and a program to use the fuel to power trucks, he said. read more

Mr Donovan

After reading some contributions to your site of insiders it made me decide to share something with you and your readers. Perhaps you see it fit to publish, I have no other avenue to vent my frustration and very deep anger.

Of late the networks have highlighted the treatment of prisoners by Americans in their prisons for presumed terrorists. At least to me it has become very clear that there has been a fundamental flaw in the command structure of the armed forces. And I am cynical enough to believe this flaw was designed and knowingly created by the ‘brass’ and top politicians. read more

Royal Dutch Shell, Tony Blair and Muammar Gaddafi

From pages 42 & 43 of “Royal Dutch Shell and its sustainability troubles” – Background report to the Erratum of Shell’s Annual Report 2010

The report was made on behalf of Milieudefensie (Friends of the Earth Netherlands)
Author: Albert ten Kate: May 2011.

In May 2005, Shell signed an agreement to start a joint venture with the Libyan National Oil Corporation. The joint venture would revamp and expand the existing liquified natural gas (LNG) Plant at Marsa el-Brega on the Libyan coast. It would also explore for gas and subsequently develop five areas totalling 20,000 square kilometres located in the heart of Libya’s Sirte Basin. Shell was committed to invest USD 637 million in the first phase of the joint venture.

Already in March 2004, Malcolm Brinded, head of exploration and production at Shell, stated: “We were in Libya in the Fifties and we were in Libya in the Eighties for an exploration programme, but for this one we came back in 2001 and so this is the culmination of discussions over that.” International sanctions on Libya were lifted in 2003 and 2004. Thus, Shell had been fishing for contracts from Gaddafi a long time before international sanctions were lifted. read more

Oilsands leak turned mine to pond

Few people probably realise this is a nightmare and very likely unstoppable until the whole aquifer runs out of energy. Compare it with a blow-out.  I think it is a major mishap but have no other info then what I read in the article.

And the oilwells in Sakhalin going to sand is a disaster of great magnitude.

6 Oil Wells On Sakhalin Go Offline

With winter starting they presumably cannot re-enter the wells and try to fix it. It also shows the original design was flawed. I bet that even those atheist Russians (and the secular Shell folk as well)  are praying the same will not happen on the gaswells because then they really are f*cked! read more

Shell touts gas benefits for Asia

Published: Sept. 23, 2011 at 8:22 AM

BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN, Brunei, Sept. 23 (UPI) — Natural gas resources will help fuel economic growth in Asia, where advances are vastly outpacing the rest of the world, a Shell executive said.

Malcolm Brinded, executive director for upstream developments at Shell, spoke to delegates at an energy conference in Brunei.

He said advancing economies in Asia, coupled with the energy deficit brought on by Japan’s nuclear power disaster, means the region needs to “invest heavily” in all resources, including solar and wind. read more

Gas Flaring Increases in the Niger Delta

Ogoni: Less Hot Air and More Action – Gas Flaring Increases in the Niger Delta

Despite repeated commitments by oil companies and governments, gas flaring continues in Nigeria at an environmental cost.

Below is an article published by Think Africa Press:

Gas flaring in the Niger Delta region highlights the environmental problems posed by resource extraction, and the failure of successive governments to tackle these problems. Goodluck Jonathan, elected as president of Nigeria this April, has the opportunity to take action where his predecessors have failed.

Gas flaring is a routine practice with a number of extractive processes, including the flaring of associated gas following oil extraction. It is a wasteful process, as much of this gas could be used to provide fuel, either for the local market or for export. According to some estimates, $2.5 billion is wasted annually through gas flaring in Nigeria. Perhaps more importantly, the release of these gasses damages the health of the surrounding population, releases enormous amounts of greenhouse gases and contributes to acid rain. In fact, according to a World Bank  report released in 2002, gas flaring in Nigeria is the single greatest source of greenhouse gases in sub-Saharan Africa. Nigeria has the secondhighest gas flaring rates in the world, following Russia. read more

Shell sees future in unconventional gas

Published: June 30, 2011 at 9:44 AM

LONDON, June 30 (UPI) — A so-called revolution in gas supplies driven in part by shale-gas reserves will allay global energy security concerns, a Shell official said in London.

Malcolm Brinded, executive director of global upstream activity at Royal Dutch Shell, told delegates at an energy summit in London natural gas is one of the best ways to cut greenhouse gases and develop a secure and sustainable energy supply.

He points to analysis from the International Energy Agency that predicts a rise in global gas demand of around 60 percent, fueled by booming economies in China and India, by 2035. read more

Shell unveils its plans for a vast offshore gas facility

The world’s first floating natural gas platform is to be built by Royal Dutch Shell, opening up vast new areas of the deep seabed for gas exploration.

The massive platform, nearly half a kilometre long, will be the biggest floating offshore drilling structure in the world, weighing in at about 600,000 tonnes – equivalent to six aircraft carriers – and staffed by 110 people at a time. Five times more steel will be used in its construction than went into the Sydney Harbour Bridge. Shell would not say how much it is expected to cost, but the total cost of exploiting the company’s Australian off-shore oil fields, where it will be used, is likely to exceed $30bn. read more

Shell Approves Floating LNG Project

SYDNEY—Royal Dutch Shell PLC on Friday approved construction of a giant vessel designed to chill natural gas for export at sea, allowing it to unlock gas deposits stranded hundreds of miles from land.

Similar vessels are being considered for several projects in deep water around the world where piping gas back to land to be liquefied would be too costly. Shell’s final investment approval for its Prelude floating liquefied natural gas development marks the first time that construction of such a vessel has been approved anywhere. read more

Big bonuses back at Shell as it declares 12% output jump

15 Mar 2011

Just two years after Shell faced one of the biggest rebellions ever seen over pay at a FTSE 100 company, the oil major today rewarded chief executive Peter Voser with a 19% increase in his pay packet.

Last year, the oil giant froze its executive pay-outs in response to investors in 2009 voting down its plans to award millions of pounds of shares to bosses despite missing performance targets.

Today, however, in its annual report, Shell said that last year Voser was rewarded with a 19% jump in remuneration, with his €1.5 million (£1.3 million) salary being supplemented with a €3.75 million bonus. That took his total pay to €5.25 million, up from €4.4 million the previous year. read more

This email account has been set up to safeguard my anonymity, as Mr. Carne is known to not handle criticism very well.

Over the years you have reported about Brent Bravo http://royaldutchshellgroup.com/tag/brent-bravo/, and consistently linked the matter with Malcolm Brinded. Maybe the time is right to take a closer look at Mr. Carne, who was the manager for Brent at the time. Mr. Carne’s style is to manage-by-viewgraph and to ignore or suppress unwanted information from the work floor. He instigated bonuses that led to the “Touch F*** All” culture on Brent; he remained clueless about their negative impact while others had already become concerned. Several years ago, Mr. Carne didn’t get a job in Shell UK that he was hoping for, and he left to take a role in BG. It didn’t take BG long to release him. read more

Big Oil Bangs the Drum for Natural Gas

Production Stops at Shell’s Brent Bravo

Royal Dutch Shell and the dark arts

UPDATED 8 SEPT & 14 SEPT 2010 (NEW INFORMATION IN RED TEXT)

Threats, including death threats, have allegedly been made against conscience driven Shell whistleblowers leaking information and/or Shell internal documents to John Donovan

By John Donovan

Andy Coulson resigned as editor of the News of the World in January 2007 over a phone hacking scandal at the newspaper. He is now media adviser to UK Prime Minister David Cameron.

Journalists hacked into mobile-phones to hear voice mail messages left for UK royalty, government ministers and celebrities.

An investigation by Scotland Yard focused almost exclusively on the hacking targeting Prince William and Prince Harry. It resulted in the imprisonment of a News of the World reporter and a private investigator. read more

RETIRED SHELL OFFSHORE EXPERT SPEAKS OUT AGAIN ON GULF OF MEXICO DISASTER

I believe you are seeing the early unravelling of this affair pointing more and more towards the owner and operator Transocean, the US legislators, and the US Oil Industry.

EMAIL TO JOHN DONOVAN FROM BILL CAMPBELL, RETIRED HSE GROUP AUDITOR, SHELL INTERNATIONAL, AN EXPERT ON OFFSHORE PLATFORM SAFETY ISSUES

John

It appears I was right in my analysis, your website was the first to present this data – its a pity that your journalist friends did not pick it up.

It was the 25th June that I passed the analysis to Professor Bea, and the 28th June to the Chemical Safety Board. They have indirectly at least thanked me for that input via my friend Raymond Holroyd.

My analysis raised concerns that platform alarms and gas detection alarms appeared to be inhibited according to testimony by the survivor Mike Williams (CBS 60 minutes).  – you covered this on your website. read more

What is going on in Brinded’s inner circle?

Posted on Shell Blog by “Seeberger” on Jul 14th, 2010 at 11:32 pm

What is going on in Brinded’s inner circle?

First, Brinded’s big ex-buddy Roly Poly Finlayson quits to go to BG; then ex Brinded Boy, Mark Carne gets sacked at BG by Chapman only to be taken back on at Shell by Brinded (no doubt with a promotion) and he in turn gets the Italian ex-stallion Restucci demoted to go to Oman!

Clearly all cannot be well between Brinded and his friends but the re-hiring of Carne in particular is a gross insult to all those who have recently been displaced as result of Voserification!

Posting on Shell Blog by “guest1” on Jul 15th, 2010 at 9:35 pm

Like a true dictator hanging on to power, Brinded is once more surrounding himself with yesmen and removing those that may be or become a threat. Everyone knows: disagreeing with Brinded means removal. Mafia dons and dictators like Stalin work in a similar fashion. I wonder if there are other similarities? Power corrupts. And we all know Brinded has power. The Board of Shell is failing once more. Failing to step in now means that corrupt people once more get their way. And all this is bad for business. read more

Oil firm’s shares surge 9% after speculation prompts takeover talk

In the past an almost double-digit percentage increase in the BP share price would have signalled a spectacular oil strike. It is a measure of the decline in the company’s fortunes that such a surge was triggered by hopes of a takeover or break-up.

The company’s stock soared 9% to 331p at one point as a growing list of companies from China to Russia were linked with potential mega-mergers that could see the end of independence for what was once Britain’s biggest firm. read more

Why BP’s Hayward Is A Goner

Christopher Helman is an Associate Editor at Forbes, based in Houston

President Obama is looking for “ass to kick” and says that if BP Chief Executive Tony Hayward worked for him, he’d have been fired already.

Politicians are out for blood, have their eyes on BP’s cash and are outraged that BP hasn’t yet moved to slash its dividend payments, expected to be on the order of $10 billion this year.

BP shareholders have let it be known that the dividend is sacrosanct, that without it they would likely jettison their BP shares, which have already fallen 40% since the Deepwater Horizon exploded. read more

Royal Dutch Shell intends to push on with its plans for deepwater drilling off the coast of Alaska this summer, despite political hostility caused by BP’s catastrophic spill in US waters.

President Barack Obama has requested extra safety assurances about Shell’s plans and halted new exploration in some areas, after the explosion at BP’s well in the Gulf of Mexico three weeks ago.

But Shell yesterday told investors at its annual meeting in the Hague that it plans to press ahead.

“We won’t drill in Alaska if we can’t do so safely and responsibly,” said Peter Voser. chief executive. “The characteristics of the fields are different to those in the Gulf of Mexico – less deep and there is less pressure. We intend to drill this summer if allowed.” read more

Shell calls for Europe to act on gas

Published: April 23, 2010 at 10:32 AM

ARIS, April 23 (UPI) — Natural gas has a central role to play in the energy and environmental future for the European community, Shell officials said in France.

European geopolitics are influenced by regional natural gas supplies. The region, meanwhile, has adopted measures to reduce greenhouse gas emissions substantially by 2020.

Malcolm Brinded, executive director for upstream business at Royal Dutch Shell, told an audience at an international oil summit in Paris summit that Europe, however, “faces a natural gas puzzle.” read more

Shell sounds alarm over energy growth

CAIRO, April 22 (UPI) — The Middle East will struggle to keep up with rising demand even with “heavy investments” in conventional and alternative energy, Shell officials said in Cairo.

Malcolm Brinded, executive director for upstream business at Royal Dutch Shell, told an audience at the American University in Cairo that rising energy demand and increasing population levels are putting global energy supplies under pressure.

He pointed to estimates from the International Energy Agency that suggest global energy demand will double by 2050 in part because of economic growth in developing economies. read more

* Sees LNG thirst doubling by 2020

* $5 trillion needed to produce new gas in next 20 years

U.K. Parliament Bribery Bill sheiks Shell

On Thursday, the UK House of Commons passed the Bribery Bill, which would make it illegal for companies doing business in the U.K. to bribe government officials.

The U.K. measure goes further than the U.S. Foreign Corrupt Practices Act because the legislation, if passed by the House of Lords, will make it illegal to request or accept a bribe. Companies could also face prosecution for failure to prevent bribery by employees.

This development will be of interest to Shell in view of its key involvement in the so called “Scandal of the Century“, for which BAE Systems has recently paid nearly $500 million in fines. read more

Shell Blog comment on article “Shell International Upstream to Power Growth…”

I suggest that we from now on start every speech or statement of Brinded with “Once upon a time, long ago…..”

SHELL BLOG COMMENT BY Guest1 on the article Shell International Upstream to Power Growth….

Adding 600,000 bopd sounds a lot but will not be sufficient to bring back the production level from 3 to 3.5 mln bopd. The reason is very simple: the current production declines by 10-15% per annum, so in 2012 the existing fields will produce (optimistically speaking, we are all followers of Brinded) not more than 2.4 mln bopd. Adding 600,000 therefore merely keeps the production level constant. We all know that Brinded is so smart he thinks he can defeat laws of nature. But oilfields are very stubborn and may not do what Brinded wants them to do… So, he better starts adding a lot more bopd if he wants to reach his earlier stated goal of 5-6 mln bopd in 2013. Time is running out fast. read more
