Can BP’s investors give oil giant the time to learn from Shell’s mistakes?

Results clouded by rivals and identity crisis! Titanic court battle looms for oil company! Executives may face charges!

By Rowena Mason: 9:33PM BST 30 Jul 2011

If those headlines were meant for readers in 2011, the subject could be only one sorry corporate story: BP and its $40bn (£24bn) Gulf of Mexico oil disaster.

However, the real answer lies six years earlier in another just as painful oil scandal that hit BP’s nearest rival, Royal Dutch Shell. This was the heated reaction to news that Shell had over-stated its oil reserves by a third in the years leading to 2004.

Downgrade after downgrade kept hitting the company’s share price until matters came to a head over an email from Shell’s head of exploration to the chief executive. read more

Oil and gas spills in North Sea every week, papers reveal

Documents list companies that caused more than 100 potentially lethal – and largely unpublicised – leaks in 2009 and 2010

Serious spills of oil and gas from North Sea platforms are occurring at the rate of one a week, undermining oil companies’ claims to be doing everything possible to improve the safety of rigs.

Shell has emerged as one of the top offenders despite promising to clean up its act five years ago after a large accident in which two oil workers died.

Documents obtained by the Guardian record leaks voluntarily declared by the oil companies to the safety regulator, the Health and Safety Executive(HSE), in a database set up after the Piper Alpha disaster of 6 July 1988 which killed 167 workers. They reveal for the first time the names of companies that have caused more than 100 potentially lethal and largely unpublicised oil and gas spills in the North Sea in 2009 and 2010. read more

Shell, Rosneft in talks for Russian arctic

Published: June 1, 2011

THE HAGUE, Netherlands, June 1 (UPI) — Royal Dutch Shell said Russian oil company Rosneft was interested in jointly exploring the hydrocarbon potential in Russia’s arctic waters.

Shell Chief Executive Officer Peter Voser said following talks with Rosneft last week that both could look at “a multitude” of opportunities in the Russian arctic. Some of the blocs included in the talks had been set aside by Rosneft for British energy company BP, the Financial Times reports. read more

BP should look to Anglo-Dutch rival Shell to help refine the way forward

One of the most striking features of the oil industry in recent times has been the divergent fortunes of Royal Dutch Shell and BP.

BP has well-publicised problems that explain its recent under-performance, such as uncertainty over its future in Russia and the shock of last year’s Deepwater Horizon drilling rig explosion in the Gulf of Mexico’s Macondo area, which left 11 workers dead. Photo: REUTERS

The past two years has seen Shell outperform the All-Share index by 7pc, while BP has under-performed by 58pc.

Results on Thursday from Shell once again underlined the companies’ differences, such as profitability and prospects, which are driving investor sentiment.

Shell fat cat Peter Voser highest earner in NL

FROM A DUTCH SHELL INSIDER

Hello John

The newspapers and some TV programmes are harping again on the bankers that have reduced bonuses but scandalously increased the ‘basic salary’ and all are back to levels of before the crisis.

So has Shell, it is mentioned several times. Voser is the highest earner in NL with 12 million Euros. What will he do with it apart from making his kids or grandchildren spoiled brats. It is the equivalent of 185000 bbls oil. These are significant numbers. And that against a background of v.d.Veer stating he would not have done one thing different or worked less hard if his salary and/or bonus would have been halved or much lower. read more

Collusion between Shell and HSE in Brent Bravo cover-up

One of the examples of collusion between Shell and HSE was that HSE were aware that the Press Releases by Shell were false.  From the feedback from the CPS investigation they confirmed that the CEO of the HSE was aware that the statements made by Shell in the Press Releases in 2006 were totally false and misleading.

SHELL ON HUMAN RIGHTS & FREEDOM OF SPEECH: SPIN VS. REALITY

By Alfred and John Donovan

Our outspoken friend, the former employee of Shell Oil USA, has raised the question of why Shell has not sued us for libel. Extracts from an article we published in February 2006 are informative on the subject. Since then, Shell was legally obliged to supply us with internal documents including one indicating that Shell decided long ago that it will never take legal action against us. Graphic From Daily Mail Article: Shell braced for yet another revolt over directors’ pay

Wilt Staph Posting on Apr 15th, 2010 at 10:16 am

Shell insiders will be shocked but not surprised by the revelations about Linda cook’s departure. There are two main factors at play in this sorry saga – Americanisation and diversity. Senior American executives in Shell have historically had bonus and pay structures which far exceed those of their mainly European colleagues. The uneasy relationship between Shell’s US subsidiary, Shell Oil, and the rest of RDS over the years led to a number of high-flying Americans moving into the Shell international arena to try and address this problem. In virtually every instance these moves have been unmitigated disasters. read more

Shell to sell refineries to boost output

Daily Telegraph: Royal Dutch Shell has unveiled the most dramatic overhaul of its business in recent memory, outlining plans to exit more than a third of its 90 retail markets, slash refining capacity and return to growth after seven years of falling output.

Peter Voser, chief executive, unveiled a further 1,000 jobs cuts in addition to the 6,000 already announced as he vowed to “sharpen up” Shell in the next three years by boosting output by 11pc.

“Shell has been disadvantaged recently, due to our higher exposure to refining and natural gas, where margins are hard-wired to the economy,” Mr Voser said.

“The priorities are for a more competitive performance, for growth, and for sharper delivery of strategy. We have more to do to drive out cost and improve the operating performance in the company.” read more

They couldn’t be sure of Shell

Times Online

From The Times
February 5, 2010

In his fascinating new book about his life and long career at BP, Lord Browne reveals he had talks with Jeroen van der Veer in 2004 about a merger with Shell.

The idea was to combine the two companies and to dispose of all BP’s refining and marketing operations. Lord Browne says it seemed “so obviously right to me and the executive team”.

But some BP directors took a different view and the proposal was never discussed by the board.

In retrospect, such a deal would not have addressed the key challenge both companies now face — access to reserves. And while Lord Browne says it would have yielded cost savings of $9 billion, results from both companies this week have shown there was huge scope for efficiency savings even without a merger. read more

Voser’s Shell Overhaul May Signal Output Revival in BP Fight

BusinessWeek Logo

By Fred Pals

Feb. 1 (Bloomberg) — Peter Voser is using lessons from his two-year stint rescuing Swiss engineering company ABB Ltd. from near bankruptcy to turn around Royal Dutch Shell Plc by selling assets, cutting thousands of jobs and speeding up decisions.

Not only has Shell suffered six years of falling output, it’s been overtaken as Europe’s biggest energy producer in terms of market value by BP Plc for the first time since 2006.

Voser’s challenge at Shell is to take out layers of management while investing $28 billion this year to keep the company in the top league of oil majors. In recent years, Shell has struggled to maintain output levels because of lackluster exploration efforts and the company’s reluctance to do the major deals that helped rivals BP and Exxon Mobil Corp. bulk up. read more

Peter Voser, 50, is a Swiss finance expert and Shell veteran who left the company in 2002 to help turn around the Swiss engineering firm ABB, and then came roaring back two years later.

Even before he took the helm on July 1, Voser signaled that Shell was in for some internal upheaval under his leadership. In late May he fired off a companywide memo complaining that costs were too high, the organization was too complex, and its culture “too consensus-oriented.” read more

NEW YORK — Even as Jeroen van der Veer was preparing to pass the baton to Peter Voser, who took over as chief executive of the oil giant Royal Dutch Shell last Wednesday, the contentious legacy of the company’s activity in Nigeria was nipping at its heels.

Just a few weeks earlier, Shell had agreed to settle a court case stemming from the execution of Ken Saro-Wiwa, a leader of the indigenous Ogoni environmental movement in Nigeria who had protested against Shell’s environmental practices in the oil-rich Niger Delta. read more

New report from environmental groups exposes Shell’s anti-climate lobbying activities

WASHINGTON – June 29 – Friends of the Earth and Oil Change International released a report today detailing oil giant Shell’s colossal contribution to global climate change and its continued investment in carbon-intensive fossil fuels.

The report also reveals new internal documents that show that Shell knew of the environmental dangers of gas flaring in Nigeria more than fifteen years ago, but chose not to stop for purely financial reasons.

“Shell greenwashes itself as a sustainable company when in reality it is the dirtiest oil producer of all,” said Ben Schreiber of Friends of the Earth. “As evidenced by Shell’s lobbying activities on the flawed climate bill that passed the House last Friday, the company has been instrumental in weakening climate legislation while claiming to care about the environment.” read more

Shell Faces Even More Revamping

When Jeroen van der Veer took the helm of Royal Dutch Shell five years ago, the company was mired in an accounting scandal involving its reporting of oil and gas reserves, a flap that nearly ended its century-long independence. Mr. van der Veer revamped Shell’s notoriously complex corporate structure, merged its fractious English and Dutch entities, and eventually restored trust with governments, regulators and investors.
