Shell takes Sarnia Manufacturing Centre off the market

Shell Canada is no longer actively pursuing the sale of its Sarnia Manufacturing Centre.

Media Relations Manager Tara Lemay made the announcement in a news release Thursday.

“We have decided to stop actively marketing the Sarnia Manufacturing Centre and its associated infrastructure which includes the refinery, chemicals plant, Sarnia and Hamilton Distribution terminals and Shell’s 45 per cent interest in Sun-Canadian Pipeline” said Lemay. “Shell will continue to operate these assets while maintaining our marketing presence in Ontario and continuing to honour branded supply and wholesale agreements.”

The company first announced its intention to divest in January of 2019.

“We stated it was to be a value-driven process rather than time-driven. Should we receive interest at a later date, we will assess next steps,” she said.

Lemay told Blackburn News Sarnia by email that she does not know of any plans for closure and considerations for future investment will be handled on a case-by-case basis.

Sarnia Mayor Mike Bradley said the announcement is important for the community.

“It brings certainty to the employees, it brings certainty to the local economy,” said Bradley. “Shell has been here a long time. At least we know now that they’re going to continue to operate the plant and the employees can feel confident that they’ll still be employed in the years ahead.”

Mayor Bradley said it appeared there was just one single buyer and negotiations proved unsuccessful.

Lemay commended staff for how they handled the uncertainty.

“We thank the staff and contractors at the Sarnia Manufacturing Centre and the terminals. Despite uncertainty for nearly two years, they remained steadfastly focused on operating safely and reliably. We will operate business as usual with a focus on safe and reliable operations and strong financial delivery.”

Lemay said Shell has built strong relationships with site neighbours and will continue to honour its commitments.

She added the announcement does not change the company’s current practice and partnership with the community.
