ALIQUIPPA — Shell Chemicals’ employees donated hundreds of gifts to the Aliquippa Salvation Army on Wednesday, gifts that will eventually go to 76 needy children in Beaver County.

Shell spokesman Joe Minnitte said he had to rent a small U-Haul truck Wednesday to deliver the toys, clothing, bicycles and other gifts.

Shell employees, both locally and in Houston, have donated to the Aliquippa Salvation Army for the last three years. About 40 children were served three years ago, 50 children last year, and 76 this year.

Minnitte said Shell began collecting gifts in early November.

“This was a combined effort of our on-site staff along with staff in Houston,” he said. “Our culture at Shell is to connect those working on our project to the local community, and we greatly appreciate the opportunity provided by the Aliquippa Salvation Army.”

The spokesman praised the Salvation Army for the work it does and “for giving us the opportunity to contribute locally.”

Representatives from the Aliquippa Salvation Army couldn’t be reached for comment Wednesday.
