Oil platform fire in Gulf of Mexico injures 2

Two people were injured Wednesday morning (Nov. 8) in a fire on a Shell oil platform in the Gulf of Mexico, the company said. The remaining 46 workers were safely evacuated.

A Shell spokesman said the fire happened at 1:30 a.m. Wednesday on its Enchilada platform at Garden Banks 128. Shell said it had identified the source of the fire and was “actively responding to the situation.”

“An early morning U.S. Coast Guard overflight is complete and there were no signs of oil on the water at that time,” the Shell spokesman said in a prepared statement.

The Enchilada platform the nearby Salsa platform have been shut down, the spokesman said. Plus, production at the Auger platform and nearby fields have been shut in, in addition to the gas export 30-inch pipeline.

The two injured workers were taken to a hospital in Houston, according to our news partners at WVUE Fox 8. The Shell spokesman said their families were notified, but did not say how serious the injuries were. The rest of the workers on the platform were evacuated to Shell’s Salsa platform and a nearby ship.

The U.S. Coast Guard and Shell are investigating the incident, and the Shell spokesman said it has activated Incident Command.

“No harm to people or the environment is ever acceptable and Shell deeply regrets that this incident occurred,” the spokesman said in the prepared statement.
