Heading into 2017, the presence of Royal Dutch Shell plc (ADR) (NYSE:RDS.A) is coming under intensified observation. Out of the many foreign energy giants operating in the Niger Delta, Shell is one that is the fulcrum of civil lawsuits, both existing and delayed.
Charges on the Anglo-Dutch oil & gas major are inclusive of corruption, violence of human rights, and environmental damage. The company is reported to have performed inhuman acts, demeaning treatment. Shell’s senior management cannot state that this came as a surprise, as it has been repeatedly warned.
Separate interrogations by WAC Global in 2003, Financial Times in 2006, and Amnesty International in 2005, all conclude that the company has given rise to conflict by granting contracts to parties which are accountable for human rights in across the southern Nigerian Delta.
Many instances clearly portray that Shell has shown misconduct and has played a vital role in exacerbating armed conflicts in the region of Rumuekpe. The incident led to nearly sixty fatalities. The practices of the oil company in the town led to “the killing and displacement of thousands of local people” in tribal groups.
Likewise, the company’s over dependence on the governmental forces has played strong role in the violations of human rights. More so, Shell has a history of paying out huge amounts in monetary compensation to the Nigerian navy while also providing transportation for soldiers known for their notorious history of abuses.
The report by Platform brings forth several communities and ethnic groups in the Delta region where Shell’s practices have repressed the military forces in the Ogoni region; particularly in the communities including Otuasega, Oru Sangama, Ogu, and Elelenwo.
Shell’s history in the Niger Delta has also been opposed by militants that believe they are being given an unfair share of oil wealth. Continuous bombings have affected the oil company’s production lately.

Royal Dutch Shell conspired directly with Hitler, financed the Nazi Party, was anti-Semitic and sold out its own Dutch Jewish employees to the Nazis. Shell had a close relationship with the Nazis during and after the reign of Sir Henri Deterding, an ardent Nazi, and the founder and decades long leader of the Royal Dutch Shell Group. His burial ceremony, which had all the trappings of a state funeral, was held at his private estate in Mecklenburg, Germany. The spectacle (photographs below) included a funeral procession led by a horse drawn funeral hearse with senior Nazis officials and senior Royal Dutch Shell directors in attendance, Nazi salutes at the graveside, swastika banners on display and wreaths and personal tributes from Adolf Hitler and Reichsmarschall, Hermann Goring. Deterding was an honored associate and supporter of Hitler and a personal friend of Goring.
Deterding was the guest of Hitler during a four day summit meeting at Berchtesgaden. Sir Henri and Hitler both had ambitions on Russian oil fields. Only an honored personal guest would be rewarded with a private four day meeting at Hitler’s mountain top retreat.
