MIRI: The Sarawak United People’s Party (SUPP) has expressed concerns over an imminent downsizing of staff in the oil and gas industry, said SUPP secretary general Datuk Sebastian Ting (pic) and SUPP information chief Adam Yii

The two told a press conference here that downsizing would also affect oil and gas industry staff working in Miri, adding that affected workers were worried about their fate.

“SUPP has received information that Shell will carry out a restructuring of their businesses in the country and that Sarawak will also be affected, especially Miri,” said Ting.

He added that some Shell staff had already approached SUPP after receiving letters of retrenchment from Sarawak Shell, and that SUPP had received information that up to 1,300 jobs will be downsized from now until 2017, including in Miri.

“They have highlighted their woes to us and have asked for urgent Government intervention to avert the mass downsizing of staff,” said Ting

He said that while Shell has set up a mobility centre to help those affected be retrained for the job market, any restructuring must not involve mass retrenchment.

Ting said that the staff facing retrenchment were worried that they could not find replacement employment due to the current economic situation.

“We have sent an urgent appeal to the Human Resource Ministry to ask them to look into this matter immediately,” said Ting.
