George Clooney and Greenpeace take aim at Shell

George Clooney is leading a star-studded line-up in the latest round with Shell over plans for its Arctic drilling.

The Hollywood megastar has closed ranks with Dame Judie Dench, Jerry Hall, Chris Martin, Kate Moss and Peter Capaldi for a T-shirt campaign designed by Vivienne Westwood for Greenpeace. The images, which sport the slogan “Save the Arctic”, will be unveiled today at the London’s Waterloo station.

A total of 60 celebrities have lent their PR prowess to the campaign.

Westwood said: “The status quo will kill us. People don’t realise how quickly we are marching toward a possible mass extinction.”

The display, which will run for two weeks, was strategically placed in the station serving Shell’s British headquarters.

Sir John Hunt, Tracey Emin, Kylie Minogue and Paloma Faith also feature on the shirts, which were made by a co-operative in Peru.

Earlier this year, Shell lodged plans to drill in the Chukchi and Beaufort seas of the Arctic near Alaska.

Greenpeace has since pursued an aggressive campaign against Shell’s plans.

Last month, activists blocked Shell’s Polar Pioneer drilling rig as it tried to leave Seattle for Arctic waters.
