Ronald Daye, 55, was just 24 days away from retiring from Shell Canada near Corunna when he was burned Wednesday in an explosion at the refinery’s steam plant.

The incident that is being investigated by Ontario’s Ministry of Labour, and other agencies, came nearly 11 years after Daye’s nephew, Trevor Daye, died on the job at Suncor, a refinery just down the road from Shell’s.

Ronald Daye, a married father of two sons, is being treated in the burn unit of a London hospital.

“As a family, we’re reeling,” said Daye’s brother, Russell Daye.

He travelled from Sarnia to London Thursday to be with family members gathered at the hospital

“He’s burned significantly,” Daye said.

“To see somebody that you love like that, it shakes you up.”

Daye said his brother has worked at Shell for approximately 35 years.
