Corrib safety clock hits three million hours mark

Corrib gas project staff and contractors celebrate 3,000,000 hours of work without a safety incident leading to a ‘lost time’ incident.

The most significant safety milestone yet on the Corrib gas project was achieved recently, when 3,000,000 hours of work were clocked without a safety incident leading to a ‘lost time’ incident.

The record was reached on October 4 and the workscope covered included all onshore pipeline and terminal activities, plus all offshore work managed out of Erris.

This represented an incredible 833 days without a safety incident leading to a staff member or contractor having to take time off work due to injury – stretching back to June 24, 2010.

In the two-and-a-quarter years since then, a huge amount of work has taken place on the project, including the relocation of almost 35,000 tonnes of peat from Aughoose to Srahmore and the importation of almost 250,000 tonnes of stone to Aughoose, to construct the tunnelling compound.

At the Bellanaboy Bridge gas terminal, construction work was substantively completed during this period and an extensive maintenance programme has been under way there for over a year.

Corrib Project Director Roeland Borsboom paid tribute to all who contributed to the achievement.

“This milestone was reached through the combined efforts of all our staff and contractors maintaining a constant focus on safety.  Currently there are almost 900 people employed on Corrib, so that makes the achievement all the more significant.

“While I congratulate the whole team on reaching 3,000,000 hours, I am also mindful that a lot of work remains to be done. Our safety motto is ‘one project, one team, one goal: Goal Zero’, meaning that our aim is to have zero safety incidents.

“That requires high standards and strong commitment, both individually and collectively, on an ongoing basis. We are all determined to keep this going as we continue this final phase of construction,” he said.
