Shell’s president for US operations on Tuesday called talk of exporting shale gas premature, at least politically.
“We’re still waking up to the fact that we have this enormous energy resource in our backyard,” Marvin Odum said at the US Energy Information Administration’s conference in Washington. “It completely changed the way we look at energy as a country.”
“I think we finish that realization process and then have the political debate about whether exporting some of that energy is something we allow to happen or not.”
The business case for exporting shale gas as LNG is strong, Odum said.
“If you look at it from a pure commercial global gas business perspective, it could make some good sense,” he said. “I just recognize we haven’t had that debate.”
Odum, in the same address, gave a dim outlook for a proposed gas pipeline from Alaska’s North Slope to Alberta. In December, EIA dropped the estimated $40 billion project from its long-term supply forecast, deciding it would not overcome competition from cheaper, closer-to-market shale gas and get built in the next two decades.
“You need a strong commercial driver to connect that gas resource with the Lower 48,” Odum said. “With the number of resources that have been discovered recently in North America, you can see why that presents quite a challenge to the commercial drivers for building that pipeline.”

Royal Dutch Shell conspired directly with Hitler, financed the Nazi Party, was anti-Semitic and sold out its own Dutch Jewish employees to the Nazis. Shell had a close relationship with the Nazis during and after the reign of Sir Henri Deterding, an ardent Nazi, and the founder and decades long leader of the Royal Dutch Shell Group. His burial ceremony, which had all the trappings of a state funeral, was held at his private estate in Mecklenburg, Germany. The spectacle (photographs below) included a funeral procession led by a horse drawn funeral hearse with senior Nazis officials and senior Royal Dutch Shell directors in attendance, Nazi salutes at the graveside, swastika banners on display and wreaths and personal tributes from Adolf Hitler and Reichsmarschall, Hermann Goring. Deterding was an honored associate and supporter of Hitler and a personal friend of Goring.
Deterding was the guest of Hitler during a four day summit meeting at Berchtesgaden. Sir Henri and Hitler both had ambitions on Russian oil fields. Only an honored personal guest would be rewarded with a private four day meeting at Hitler’s mountain top retreat.
