On Friday Februrary 17th, Ian Percival, who was one of the first MEng in Petroleum Engineering students 33 years ago in 1975/6, visited the Institute. The majority of the 10 students in this first year of the  course had come with industry experience, Ian having come from working as a well site petroleum engineer with Shell in Gabon.

Ian remembers well the somewhat last minute preparation for the lectures the next day, taking place on the top floor of the former Mechanical Engineering, which was where the Department was located during the construction of the first building ( the James Brown Building). Ian also remembers  the informal meeting in the Grassmarket at the start of the course when the first Head of Department, Jim Brown, gave a challenge to students and staff to work as a team to get through this first year of the course.  Ian was surprised to see the extent of the Institute’s buildings and the considerable laboratory facilities in the Institute.

Following the MEng in Petroleum Engineering course, Ian returned to Shell and went to their operations for NAM in the Netherlands from were he subsequently worked in many of Shell locations across the world. Ian has just retired from Shell where his last position was group chief petroleum engineer.
