Canadian family allegedly poisoned by Shell gas flaring

The following information is generated from emails received from Donna Getz, who alleges that Shell has poisoned herself and her husband as a result of gas flaring. This article has been updated with related correspondence, including a letter from Shell, plus Medical Reports and Gas Flaring and Gas Analysis Reports.

Donna sought the intervention of the Oil and Gas Commission Board in Canada only to discover that Shell has a representative on the board. She is seeking justice and according to our expert sources appears to have a strong case. Donna urgently needs good legal representation on a “no win no fee” basis. Her email address is available on request from John Donovan: [email protected]

Extract from comments received from an expert who has seen the evidence: “Shell tested and flared gas from their well under inappropriate meteorological conditions, in violation of their flaring permits, either deliberately or through negligence. The end result was the harm suffered by the Getz’s.” read more

Shell: Brent Platforms Shut For Undisclosed Period

JANUARY 18, 2011

By Sarah Kent Of DOW JONES NEWSWIRES

LONDON (Dow Jones)– Royal Dutch Shell PLC (RDSB) Tuesday said its four platforms in the North Sea’s Brent field will be shut for an undisclosed period while it investigates the causes and impact of an accident Saturday.

The four platforms were shut after a fender fell off the Brent Bravo platform, the company told Dow Jones Newswires.

No people were hurt in the incident, but Brent Bravo and three other platforms, Brent Alpha, Brent Charlie and Brent Delta were shut as a precautionary measure, the company said. read more

Shell Shuts Brent North Sea Platforms After Incident, Can’t Forecast Return

By Eduard Gismatullin and Lananh Nguyen – Jan 18, 2011 12:49 PM GMT+0000

Royal Dutch Shell Plc, Europe’s largest oil company, said it shut down production from four Brent platforms in the North Sea following an accident.

“All non-essential personnel onboard the Shell-operated Brent Bravo platform in the northern North Sea returned to shore on Saturday,” Sally Hepton, a London-based company spokeswoman, said by phone today. “We have taken these actions as a precautionary measure.”

Shell declined to say when operations will resume or whether the company would have to declare force majeure on Brent crude shipments. There were no injuries, Hepton said. read more

Oil platform plan threatens rare Pacific whale-WWF

Tue Jan 18, 2011 2:02am GMT

TOKYO Jan 18 (Reuters Life!) – Plans for an oil platform off Sakhalin in Russia’s Far East poses a major threat to an endangered whale population already on the brink of disappearing, a wildlife protection group said.

Sakhalin Energy Investment Company, which is partly owned by Shell as well as several Japanese companies, has announced plans for a major oil platform near the feeding grounds of the Western North Pacific gray whale population, of which only about 130 exist, said WWF-International. read more

Dr John Huong: Donovan correspondence with Royal Dutch Shell

At the age of 90 and with numerous aliments, the thought of ending up in a small room with only iron bars for a view and without air conditioning in a tropical climate, is not much of an incentive to make the trip. In other words, while pretending that my presence in court in Malaysian legal jurisdiction is essential, there is also more than a hint of intimidation attached to deter me from giving evidence in support of my sworn affidavit, which quite frankly, completely destroys Shell’s defamation case against Dr Huong. Shell led Sakhalin II construction threatens endangered gray whales

The multi-billion-dollar project, led by Royal Dutch Shell, has also been accused of inflicting large-scale damage on Sakhalin’s ecosystem, including illegal deforestation, the dumping of toxic waste, and soil erosion.

The construction of a third oil platform for the Shell-led Sakhalin II energy project may threaten a critically endangered population of gray whales off Russia’s eastern coast, the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) said on Monday.

The company, which already has two platforms in the Russian Far East, announced in December its plans to build another one near the crucial feeding habitat of the gray whale population.

“The construction and operation of an additional off-shore platform could have numerous negative impacts on the whales, potentially disrupting feeding behavior and increasing the chance of fatal ship strikes,” WWF said in a statement. “Also, a third platform heightens the risk of an environmentally catastrophic oil spill in this sensitive habitat.” read more

Royal Dutch Shell Plc’s chief said the implementation of climate change agreements made at Cancun last month “won’t happen overnight”, and policymakers must take action now “because the clock is ticking.”

“In the short term, we should focus on areas where we can get the cheapest and quickest carbon dioxide reductions,” Chief Executive Officer Peter Voser said at a renewable energy conference in Abu Dhabi today. “It will take a while for international standards to be implemented, but we are of the opinion that we have to move now.” read more

Production Stops at Shell’s Brent Bravo

By Rebecca Buchan

Published: 17/01/2011

OIL giant Shell has halted production at four of its platforms and sent 100 workers back onshore after part of a platform fell into the North Sea.

An investigation is being carried out on the Brent Bravo platform after a heavy protective frame, known as a fender, collapsed.

No one was injured and the company said there was no significant damage caused.

The other three Brent platforms – Alpha, Charlie and Delta – do not have these protective frames, however Shell has had to stop all production on the Brent field as all the rigs work together in a “hub”. read more

The Pipe Movie Trailer

‘The Pipe’ is showing at the Palm Springs International Film Festival in California at the moment:
http://www.psfilmfest.org/festival/film/detail.aspx?id=22366&fid=43

It will get a great profile in the US especially due to the Gulf of Mexico disaster, could you possibly post the Palm Springs Festival link and embed the trailer?

Synopsis:
In a remote corner of the West of Ireland sits Broadhaven Bay. It is the perfect picture postcard, where the high cliffs of Erris Head and the Stags of Broadhaven stand sentry at the mouth of the bay against the mighty Atlantic, as if protecting the delicate golden sands of Glengad beach and the tiny village of Rossport, which nestles behind the dunes. However, this peaceful tranquility belies the turmoil that lies beneath, and the unique nature of the coastline which has sustained generations of farmers and fishermen, has also delivered to Shell Oil the perfect landfall for the Corrib Gas Pipeline. read more

Global Oil Companies Discover Cash in Their Trash

Companies like BP and Shell fetch top prices for assets many thought they’d struggle to discard

By Stanley Reed, Brian Swint and Edward Klump January 13, 2011

To pay tens of billions of dollars in costs from the Deepwater Horizon disaster and spill, BP (BP) has been forced to ditch oil fields and other energy properties across the globe. Far from the predicted firesale, BP’s housecleaning has been a huge success. It has brought in $22 billion so far, fetching double the values on BP’s books for some assets. Now other companies including Royal Dutch Shell (RDS.A) and ExxonMobil (XOM), which sold nine of its Gulf of Mexico fields for about $1 billion last year, are also making divestitures of their less-attractive assets. read more

Jyoti Munsiff,

Congratulations on your appointment as Chief Ethics and Compliance Officer for Royal Dutch Shell Plc.

As you know I am being sued by eight companies of the Royal Dutch Shell Group for alleged defamation. The relevant Shell companies have obtained a restraining order which prevents me for speaking the TRUTH in line with the United Nations Universal Declaration on Human Rights. My rights to freedom of expression have in fact been restrained for over 18 months. I had thought that Shell supported this UN Declaration, but it seems that this assumption must be incorrect. Shell Fears Yearlong Delay Of Alaska Drilling Program -FT

DOW JONES NEWSWIRES

The head of Royal Dutch Shell PLC’s (RDSA, RDSA.LN) U.S. entity fears difficulties in gaining a federal air-quality permit will push back its long- delayed plans to drill in Alaska’s Artic waters by another year, the Financial Times reported online Wednesday.

“It’s a significant challenge to drilling in 2011,” Marvin Odum, president of Shell Oil Co., told the newspaper.

The U.K.-Dutch company is halfway through 10-year leases in Alaska but continues to struggle to move ahead with its $3.5 billion investment to drill in the state’s Beaufort and Chukchi seas. The plans have been dogged by environmental lawsuits and permit issues on top of calls for better spill prevention and containment capabilities following BP PLC’s (BP, BP.LN) leaking- well disaster in the Gulf of Mexico last year. read more

The company is still looking to sell the lubricant production unit at the Harburg refinery in Germany. It will maintain the refinery in its current form until the second quarter of 2012, The Hague-based company said in a press release on its website in German today. read more

Bill Campbell quoted in Final Report on BP Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill

Under the heading of “Learning from Accidents:”, page 231 of the Final Report published by the U.S. National Commission on the BP Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill and Offshore Drilling

Extract from Chapter 8, page 233

Shell’s safety response. Shell, a long-time leader in Gulf of Mexico operations (before BP surpassed it, as described in Chapter 2), has had its own safety problems. Two men died in a gas leak on the company’s Brent Bravo platform in 2003; former Shell senior manager Bill Campbell, who had earlier led a safety review, said after the accident that his 1999 warnings had been ignored by the company.99 Shell denied that it operated at high levels of risk.100

Shell subsequently tightened and simplified its safety rules.101 Shell also has promoted the use of the “safety case” worldwide (a risk-management approach to regulation described in Chapter 3).102 It has adopted the safety-case approach even in the United States, where it is not required to do so, and has promoted it for the industry more broadly.103 Marvin Odum, president of Shell Oil Company and director of Shell’s Upstream Americas business, told the Commission’s November 9 hearing that “the safety case in deepwater drilling shows how we identify and assess the hazards on a rig; how we establish the barriers to prevent and control those hazards; how we assign the critical activities needed to maintain the integrity of these barriers.”104 read more

BP oil spill report: Oil firms face big bills to raise safety standards

Rowena Mason

By Rowena Mason, Energy Correspondent 8:57PM GMT 11 Jan 2011

Companies from oil majors like BP and Exxon to minnow explorers will all have to pay more for insurance, spill prevention, better equipment and more thorough safety standards under new recommendations by the Oil Spill Commission. For example, they will need to demonstrate they have the technology to control an underwater blow-out before being given permits to drill

The report also strongly criticised the powerful American Petroleum Institute (API) – an industry-funded body responsible for setting standards for equipment across the world, not just the US – saying its expert advice was biased. read more

Nigeria: Maybe Shell isn’t that bad

By Emily Grainger

I am currently investigating Shell’s position within Nigeria, more specifically the Delta; when I came across your website. It is crammed with an insane amount of information I can’t even begin to take half of it in, it’s a great resource, thanks.

Something I never thought I would say before investigating their operations in the war zone that is the Delta is that maybe Shell isn’t that bad. I am more than sure this comment will rub a few backs up – passionate is an understatement for the debate established on here! I don’t think I’ll ever be able to say categorically whether or not as a company I think they are ethical or not. YES they chose the Nigerian Government over local communities as their key stakeholder, but that’s because without them they wouldn’t be able to operate at all within the region let alone country. read more

Deepwater Horizon Regulatory Failures

By W M Campbell – 12th January 2011 (Retired HSE Group Auditor, Shell International)

Regulatory Failures

As the queue begins to form of those who would sue BP and others for the failures that caused Deepwater Horizon, it appears, from the early release of the findings of the Presidential Commission published last week, that it was the negligence of multiple parties that caused the multiple failures.  Negligence also extends to the present and previous US Government administrations, their agencies and members of Congress.  To put the Commission Report in context we need to go back in time to 1982, and take in some history. read more

Dr Huong defence against Royal Dutch Shell defamation action

It will soon be apparent to our readers from the extracts below, why Shell settled the Dr Huong litigation out of court. A very considerable pile of extremely smelly internal dirty laundry that Shell definitely did not want aired in open court, even in Malaysia.

By John Donovan

Dr John Huong, a former Shell geologist of almost 30 years standing was the FIRST SHELL employee to blow the whistle on the Shell reserves fraud (and other important issues relating to the misdeeds of Royal Dutch Shell management). He was not prepared to tolerate  the lives of Shell employees being recklessly put at risk.

As a result Shell was determined to silence him at all costs. Hence the unprecedented spectacle of EIGHT Royal Dutch Shell companies collectively bringing a defamation action against one former employee – an unemployed Malaysian who had no prospect whatsoever of finding alternative employment in his profession while the litigation cloud hung over the heads of himself and his family for several years. read more

Alaska Pipeline Closes

Drop in Production by BP, Others Threatens to Push Oil Toward $100 a Barrel

Alyeska Pipeline Service Company

Workers discovered the pipeline leak at a pump station, above, and isolated its source as of late Saturday.

JANUARY 10, 2011

By GUY CHAZAN

BP PLC and other oil producers were forced to shut down nearly all their output on Alaska’s North Slope, after a leak led to the closure of the Trans Alaska Pipeline.

Analysts said the shutdown of the 800-mile pipeline network could trigger a jump in oil prices unless the flow of oil resumes quickly, as the region represents a significant slice of domestic U.S. oil output. Some analysts said the disruption could help drive crude-oil prices toward $100 a barrel from below $90 now. read more

Investor advice from a Shell insider of almost 30 years

SOME ADVICE FOR INVESTORS FROM DR JOHN HUONG (RIGHT), A SENIOR SHELL INSIDER OF ALMOST 30 YEARS…

Investors – “You cannot be sure of Shell” growing your funds. Potential employees – do not trust your career and aspirations to Shell until you understand the true inside story. If Shell is unwilling to undergo radical change at every level in the organization for the better, Shell’s negative and evil ingrained cultures will ultimately destroy the little which remains of its former reputation.

Just consider the recent appalling headlines as follows.

The Independent: “Lies, cover-ups, fat cats and an oil giant in crisis”

The Guardian: “Trail of emails reveals depths of deceit at the heart of Shell”

The Scotsman: “Shell admits reserve ‘lies’”

Daily Telegraph: “Memos expose Shell’s years of lying”

London Evening Standard: “Shell bosses lied to the City”

Minneapolis Star Tribune: “Dutch/Shell Group exec was ‘sick and tired’ of lying”

(PART OF THE ADVICE THAT RESULTED IN DR HUONG BEING BURIED IN DEFAMATION PROCEEDINGS BY EIGHT ROYAL DUTCH SHELL COMPANIES BEFORE THEY DECIDED IT BEST TO SETTLE THE MATTER OUT OF COURT – SAME AS WITH THE NIGERIAN CASE AGAINST SHELL ALLEGING MURDER, TORTURE AND OTHER HUMAN RIGHTS VIOLATIONS BY SHELL AND ITS AGENTS/ACCOMPLICES. An explosion and fire at the Horizon Oil Sands facility in Canada’s Alberta province has injured four workers and forced the site to suspend operations.

The blast at the plant, owned by Canadian Natural Resources Ltd, ignited the upgrader, part of the plant that converts bitumen into synthetic crude.

The company said the fire had been isolated and brought under control.

Letter from a Shell Whistleblower, Dr John Huong

By Dr. John Huong (right)

Below is a letter I last wrote on 3rd June 2004 to Shell Malaysian Management, hoping that if both sides entered into a constructive dialogue on a “without prejudice” basis, the matter could be resolved amicably despite the threats I had received on 17th May 2004 from their legal Manager Mr. Thavakumar Kandiahpillai.

It is significant that legitimate questions (“Confidentiality versus Shareholder’s interests”-25th May 2004) I posed to him about Shell’s ethical practices have remained unanswered. read more

Time to take the tough decisions on oil and gas

The Irish Times – Tuesday, January 4, 2011

FINTAN O’TOOLE

WE’VE just been through a year when the unthinkable became normal. The problem is that all the unthinkables have been bad: the nationalisation of the banks and their debts, the arrival of the IMF and so on. Is it not time to consider another unthinkable that would be of potentially transformative significance – taking back control of our offshore resources.

Wishful thinking is the last thing we need, but it is not far-fetched to suggest that oil and gas finds could play a huge role in Ireland’s long-term economic and fiscal future. read more

Dutch (opposition) Labour Party MP Sjoera Dikkers has just spent four days in Nigeria’s oil-rich Delta, in preparation for a parliamentary hearing on Royal Dutch Shell’s activities there.

Complex situation
Ms. Dikkers, a former activist with non-governmental organisations, told Radio Netherlands Worldwide that her visit made her realise the complexity of the situation, adding “shades of gray” to her picture of the Delta region. She said she almost longed for her activist days, “when companies were bad and NGO’s were good.” read more

Dr John Huong Index

Several years have now passed. Shell has spent tons of shareholder funds on draconian defamation legal proceedings with related injunctions and demands for the imprisonment of Dr. Huong. Ironically, despite a settlement between the parties, the same information is still being published on the same website. The litigation was a complete waste of time and money.

Whistleblowers devastating indictment of Shell continues

The Shell brand name has an entirely different connotation these days. It stands for deceit, cover-up, dishonesty, pollution, corruption, undercover spies, class action law suits, defective gasoline, exploitation of the poorest people on the planet; support of a murderous military regime, etc – arrogance and evil on a breathtaking scale.

(Verdict by Dr John Huong, a deeply religious, conscience driven production geologist – a Malaysian humanitarian and loyal Shell employee for 29 years)

Royal Dutch Shell begins to get the idea about further U.S. exploration

When Shell first entered the U.S. in the early years of the 20th Century, the company was labeled “The Yellow Peril”. History repeats.

Extraordinary letter from Shell whistleblower Dr John Huong

Because my stand on this matter in consonant with Shell Group Business Principles, its governance and with Malaysian national interests in mind, I made my concerns known internally at Shell. Shell made me feel that I had sinned for having a moral compass and a conscience.

My name is Dr John Huong. Until May 2003 I was a Shell geologist for almost 30 years – a management level employee of Shell Malaysia. I specialised in many areas of earth sciences including Micropalaeontology, Petrology, Sedimentology, Field Geology, Bio-Sequence Stratigraphy, Operation Geology, Exploration Geology, Reservoir Geology and Production Geology.  I am also conversant with Petrophysics, Petroleum Engineering (i.e. Well Engineering, Reservoir Engineering) and Petroleum Economics.  In the company, I belonged to the Malaysian Senior Staff Council (MSSC) and was once its Vice President. read more

Royal Dutch Shell management accused of a ‘con-artist mentality’

By John Donovan

EXTRACTS FROM THE WISE WORDS OF SHELL WHISTLEBLOWER DR JOHN HUONG PROHIBITED BY THE MALAYSIAN COURTS FROM PUBLICATION ON THIS WEBSITE

When I started with Shell all those years ago I was proud to be an employee of what I considered to be nothing less than the best company in the world; an internationally respected brand and an equally highly respected management. It is a matter of the deepest regret to me that the company has sunk so law with its management acquiring global notoriety for participating in a disgraceful scandal which ranks alongside the likes of Enron and WorldCom. read more
