Shell’s Data Breach: A Security Spill?

Written by Emmanuel Carabott on February 15, 2010 – 4:35 pm

This week the BBC reported that someone has disclosed contact details for 170,000 of Shell’s employees world wide. The disclosure comes with a note claiming it is being disclosed by former employees who can’t stand the damage the company is doing to the environment.  Shell has in turn downplayed the event claiming that the information disclosed does not pose a security risk to its employees since it does not include employee’s addresses. read more

A spokesperson for the ICO said: “Shell has notified us of a security breach regarding a significant amount of people’s personal details. Evening Express: Group claims responsibility for ‘inside job’ at oil giant

PROBE: Oil firm Shell said an investigation would be launched into the data leak.

A DATA leak endangering oil workers was committed by undercover environmental activists, it has been claimed.

The Evening Express told how a database containing more than 100,000 personal details about Shell employees and contractors was leaked from the oil firm.

A 116-strong group claiming to be full-time Shell employees – some of whom could be working in Aberdeen – have claimed responsibility for the data leak.

And the group claims the Shell database leak was an organised “inside job” to highlight alleged human rights abuses in oil-rich Nigeria. read more

Shell Employees Attack its “Repugnant” Behaviour in Nigeria

finally the internal tension of Shell’s Nigerian problem has, it seems, gone public

Published by Andy Rowell February 15th, 2010

Having written about Shell in Nigeria for over fifteen years, we have known that there was huge internal disquiet about the company’s operations in the country.

In the aftermath of the murder of Nigerian writer Ken Saro-Wiwa in 1995, Shell was pilloried in the international press for being complicit in his death and for being an integral part of the vortex of violence tearing the Niger Delta apart. read more

Shell hit by massive data breach

The Register

Posted in IT Director, 15th February 2010 09:20 GMT

By John Oates

Shell has been hit by a massive data breach – the contact database for 176,000 staff and contractors at the firm has been copied and forwarded to lobbyists and activists opposed to the company.

John Donovan, an activist who received the database, said he had voluntarily destroyed the files. But he warned that other copies were available online.

The email supposedly comes from 176 “concerned staff” to highlight Shell’s activities in Nigeria. The database is about six months old and could have been released by a recently-laid off staff member, or there could really be a rogue campaign group within Shell.Richard Wiseman, chief ethics and compliance officer at Royal Dutch Shell, wrote to staff last week after the breach emerged. read more

Contact details for 170,000 Shell employees a prize for hackers

Shell’s directory leak shouldn’t be taken lightly

Shell must have been a little shocked to hear a database of its entire staff directory – all 170,000 employees – had been emailed to environmental and human rights groups.

But it’s not clear, as Ed Crooks writes on ft.com, exactly who leaked it; although it claims to be a group of 116 employees, who are apparently concerned about Nigeria:

The e-mail sets out a four-stage strategy for raising awareness of allegations about Shell’s practices in Nigeria, including campaigns to target the media and institutional investors. read more

Unignorable thesis

Financial Times

By Louise Lucas

Published: February 12 2010 02:00

What to make of the “peaceful corporate revolution” being urged on Royal Dutch Shell, where nameless, ostensible employees are taking it to task over activities in Nigeria?

Big companies, particularly those dredging the heavily geopolitical waters of oil, inevitably come under attack. When you produce something that generates big money, often in countries where poverty is rife and human rights abuses abound, there is plenty of scope for criticism. There is also plenty of scope for confusion as to what an oil giant can and cannot do: insisting that a government’s oil revenues are funnelled into hospitals and schools is laudable, but presidents of countries are free to think otherwise. read more

BP and Shell Investors Want BP and Shell Out of Canadian Oil Sands

Threat to the privacy and safety of thousands of Shell employees

POSTINGS TODAY ON SHELL BLOG…

It is Shell that has acted in a cavalier way with other people’s personal data, otherwise the Shell Address Book could not have been circulated to hostile parties, including Nigerian activists.

Posting by “Anonymous”
on Feb 7th, 2010 at 2:55 pm

John, given your oft-expressed criticism of Shell’s supposed lack of concern for safety and disregard for its legal responsibilities, can you explain why you chose to trumpet the theft of Shell’s employee database on your website and even made facetious offers to pass it on to others? You must surely know that this information is a) stolen property and b) a potential threat to the privacy and safety of the thousands of people whose personal information it contains. If Shell had behaved in such a cavalier way with other people’s personal data, you would no doubt have jumped all over them. So why the double standard? And since the database is stolen property, will you be returning it to Shell and will you provide information to the authorities to assist them in investigating the theft? After all, you can’t expect Shell to respect the rule of law if you aren’t prepared to do so yourself. read more

Nigerian militants say disable Shell oil pipeline

LAGOS, Feb 7 (Reuters) – A Nigerian militant group said on Sunday it had attacked a major Royal Dutch Shell (RDSa.L) oil pipeline in the Niger Delta but the Anglo-Dutch company said it had no reports of any such sabotage on its infrastructure.

The Joint Revolutionary Council, a coalition of ex-militants and community leaders, said in a statement it had disabled a trunk line in the Obunoma area of Rivers state connecting several flow stations to the Bonny export terminal. read more

Alleged fraud involving 10 senior officials of Shell Brunei

By John Donovan

Some strange events at Shell Brunei Petroleum (SBP).

Around four weeks ago we published an email from a senior official of the Brunei government writing from The Chairman’s Office of Shell Brunei Petroleum, explaining the mysterious absence of  the companies Managing Director, Dr Grahaeme Henderson. It said he was absent for medical treatment.

We understand from our sources that in November the head of SBP HSE left the country in a hurry and did not return.

Now we learn that a number of fraud investigations are going on, allegedly involving Nigerian expats. read more

Under pressure Shell wields the axe

Heath Aston, Daily Mail
5 February 2010, 9:51am

Oil giant Royal Dutch Shell will cut jobs and refine capacity as it enters an ‘uncertain’ 2010 faced with weak gas prices and depressed refining margins for oil products.

Under pressure from better performing rivals such as BP, Shell chief executive Peter Voser conceded that the Anglo-Dutch company had become bloated during the good times of sky-high oil prices before the financial crisis.

He said: ‘We’ve had four years of record profits. You know yourself when you have a good time you eat a little too much and you get a bit fat.’ read more

Lord Browne took BP to the brink of a mega-merger with Royal Dutch Shell six years ago only to be thwarted at the last minute by opposition from a handful of his own board members, the former chief executive has claimed.

“We missed the boat” argues Browne in his autobiography, which is published on Monday. read more

Borneo Bulletin: Fraud probe at oil company

By Ignatius Stephen

Saturday 6 February 2010

In an effort to keep the country’s cooperate image clean the Brunei Anti Corruption Bureau has begun a series of massive fraud investigations against more than 10 senior oil company officials.

The amount probed, according to reliable sources, exceeds $5 million and both local and foreign employees are allegedly linked to what is quoted as “irregular material purchase procedures and related matters.”

The company Brunei Shell Petroleum (BSP) has already dismissed some of the officials after questioning while the affairs of others are still being looked into, informed sources said. Some of the others are under investigation, it is learnt. read more

They couldn’t be sure of Shell

Times Online

From The Times
February 5, 2010

In his fascinating new book about his life and long career at BP, Lord Browne reveals he had talks with Jeroen van der Veer in 2004 about a merger with Shell.

The idea was to combine the two companies and to dispose of all BP’s refining and marketing operations. Lord Browne says it seemed “so obviously right to me and the executive team”.

But some BP directors took a different view and the proposal was never discussed by the board.

In retrospect, such a deal would not have addressed the key challenge both companies now face — access to reserves. And while Lord Browne says it would have yielded cost savings of $9 billion, results from both companies this week have shown there was huge scope for efficiency savings even without a merger. read more

Another major humiliation and security breach for Shell arising from our blog site royaldutchshellplc.com.   First we beat Shell to the top level domain name for Royal Dutch Shell Plc.  As a result, with Shell’s written approval, we process job applications and business proposals meant for Shell, dealing with them as we deem appropriate.

We also regularly publish leaked Shell information, including for example breaking the news last May about Voser’s Transition 2009 plans for Shell. read more

POTENTIALLY DISASTROUS DATA SECURITY BREACH AT SHELL

Now a further huge embarrassment. We have in our possession a leaked database directory with contact information for every Shell employee on the planet – over 100,000 people. This is despite a global spying operation by Shell against its own employees designed to prevent insider information from reaching us. Shell Corporate Affairs Security is no doubt redoubling its efforts to plug the leaks, but the damage continues.

Some words of advice for Shell CEO Peter Voser

From “Jo Blow”

Very Interesting!  “Shell to Axe another 1000 employee’s and idle or sell an additional 15% of downstream”.

I don’t know about how they do it in Switzerland, but in East Texas, We find the best way to dig ourselves out of a hole is with a Shovel, not an Axe.  I do not think there is anyone out there that does not get the fact that Shell’s cost structure is heavy.  After painstaking and careful research I have determined that Mr. Voser is not blind, so he must be dumb.  He has surrounded himself with the very same bozo’s that should have been held accountable for the cost structure that is in place now.  Perhaps Mr. Voser should go in the archives and look into the past, He will soon realize that he has not re-invented the wheel.  Shell has ignorantly progressed through this very same cycle many times already, but apparently has failed to learn any valued lessons.  If it wasn’t so sad for so many people that dedicated themselves to this company it would be extremely comical. read more
