Dear Friends:

INDIGENOUS PEOPLE: A NEW PARTNERSHIP

We celebrate the International Year of the World’s indigenous Peoples’ this January 4th, 2010 with the Ogoni ethnic nationality of Nigeria’s Niger Delta. In 1990 when the United Nations General Assembly through resolution 45/164 proclaimed 1993 the International Year of World’s indigenous peoples, the theme for that year was, “Indigenous People: A new partnership.” We shall borrow this theme again this year as we call for renewed domestic and international support for the Ogoni struggle. The Ogoni demands in the Ogoni Bill of Rights (OBR) are fair and just and we shall continue to press for it non-violently until fully realized.

Ogoni people beginning this year need renewed collaboration and partnership in her struggle for a state (BORI STATE) for the people of Ogoni, Andoni, Oyigbo, Nkoro, and Opobo ethnic nationalities( within the Nigerian nation state). On December 15, 2009, the representatives of these ethnic nationalities led by Senator Gbene (Dr.) Cyrus Nunieh submitted a memorandum of their demand to the Senate Committee on the Review of the 1999 constitution. We are calling on all supporters of our struggle, Ogonis at home and diaspora, politicians and church leaders to collaborate and partner with us to put pressure on the Nigerian State to honor this demand.

Bori State would be one of the most viable states in the Federal Republic of Nigeria. It has the Bomu oil field, Bodo West oil field, Tai Oil field, Korokoro oil field, Yorla Oil field, Natural Gas depot at Nyokuru- Baa, Ebubu oil field, Afam and Oyigbo oil fields, Opobo South Flow station, Ofon and Odudu platform, Ngo oilfield, Edikan, Afia, Ime oilfields, Amenam- Kpoko oilfields, Otaka-Ikpono oilfields, Asaramatoru oil fields amongst others. It is home also to the National Fertilizer Company (NAFCON), Afam Power Station, Eleme Petrochemical complex; two oil refineries, two sea ports – Federal lighter terminal and federal Ocean terminal at Onne.

We also need partnership in ensuring a halt to the militarization and relocation of the 191 Battalion Sic 2nd Amphibious Brigade to Ogoniland. The TV cameras must roll again to protect the Ogoni people from trauma and psychological innuendo they are suffering as a result of heavy military presence in Ogoniland. The people of Ogoni (including Yeghe, Biara, Deken, Kaani 2, and Bunu Tai) must take an extra step in ensuring a halt to this project billed to be sited on a large 700,000 hectares of land at Kpoopie. We cannot continue to play host to military projects when there are no Universities, health facilities in Ogoni.  The world and the Ogoni people should be aware that Shell Oil Company the architect of violence in Nigeria’s Niger Delta is behind the planned militarization of Ogoniland.

The world should come to the aid of Ogoni because she is vulnerable. What has the Ogoni people benefitted from the Onne naval barracks in Onne, the Police training college at Nonwa Tai, MOPOL 56 headquaters at Saakpenwaa, Federal Police and Joint Security taskforce that calls Ogoni home? Why is Ogoni been surrounded with military installations and not development projects? Let it be known that all violent activities in the Niger Delta are either Shell Oil or government sponsored.

We also call upon the world to partner with us this year as we struggle to ensure that the name of Ken Saro Wiwa, Africa’s foremost environmentalist and eight of his compatriots are exonerated and cleared from Nigeria’s criminal records.

Ogonis at home and diaspora, as we seek partnership in the creation of Bori State, we have to unite to halt Shell Oil incursion and relocation of military cantonment to Ogoniland. John Henrik Clarke (1972) an historian reminded us that, “For a period of more than one hundred years African warrior nationalists planted the seeds of African independence for our generation to harvest. Their agitations helped Africa to create the basis for the political emergence of modern Africa.” If Ogoni must survive, we must unite to sow the seed that would bear fruits for our generation and progeny.

Peace among men.
