Shell’s Stanlow refinery could be sold as a going concern

Shell UK’s Stanlow refinery in Ellesmere Port could be sold as a going concern as part of a site review

Aug 12 2009 by Chris Smith, Ellesmere Port Pioneer

SHELL’S massive oil refinery in Ellesmere Port could be sold off.

The option of selling the Stanlow complex in Oil Sites Road as a going concern forms part of a review of the oil giant’s sites in the UK and around the world.

But Shell, which admits it faces a ‘challenging time’ during the recession, says there are no plans to close the plant which employs 900 permanent staff.

The oil giant won’t comment on national newspaper claims that Stanlow could be sold, with two of Shell’s German refineries, for £1.5 billion at auction, or that potential bidders include a consortium led by Libya’s National Oil Corporation and Indian mobile phone company Essar. read more

Colonel Gadaffi

At 7.01pm on February 9, 1996, a huge lorry bomb exploded at South Quay in London’s Docklands, killing two people and injuring more than 100 others. The blast ripped a 32ft crater and caused £85m of damage.

Jonathan Ganesh, 37, a security guard from east London, was buried alive in the rubble. His two friends, Inam Bashir and John Jeffries, were killed in the news kiosk where they worked.

For Ganesh, the blame for the attack lies not only with the IRA, which planted the bomb, but also with Libya, which is suspected of supplying the Semtex plastic explosive used in it. He is among the bomb victims and their families who want compensation from Tripoli. read more

LONDON — Royal Dutch Shell would today announce its plans to cut about 15% of the jobs in its core exploration and production unit, a Shell protest website reported on Friday.

An announcement on restructuring the unit, which generates most of Shell’s profit, was due today, website Royaldutchshellplc.com said, citing sources inside the oil major.

Shell declined to comment.

In May, Europe’s largest oil company by market value said it planned to restructure its exploration division and divide it into two units, one focused on the Americas and another focused on the rest of the world. read more
