LONDON (Dow Jones)–Royal Dutch Shell PLC’s (RDSB.LN) chief of gas, power and renewable energy Linda Cook has resigned unexpectedly, and will step down as an executive director of the company effective June 1, the company said in a statement Tuesday.

Cook, who has been with the company for 29 years, played a key role at Shell overseeing its largest single project – the Pearl gas-to-liquids plant in Qatar – and significant investments in liquefied natural gas.

However, the company recently said it will make no significant new investments in solar and wind energy, switching its focus instead to biofuels, which is led by Shell’s oil products and refining division.

Cook, along with exploration and production chief Malcolm Brinded were candidates to replace Chief Executive Jeroen van der Veer when he retires at the end of June, but lost out to Chief Financial Officer Peter Voser.

“I am most grateful to Linda Cook for her many important contributions to the success of our company. Shell’s LNG capacity has risen by over 60% in the last five years, with more to come,” said van der Veer.

At 0722 GMT, Shell shares in London were down 0.5%, or 8 pence, at 1627p in a broadly lower FTSE 100 market.
