The event in Leeds marks the culmination of a year-long series of events nation-wide – the Sustainable UK Cities Tour – which has been visiting seven key cities over the course of 2008.
The insights from Leeds and other cities along the way will be taken to national policy-makers in 2009 to help shape national thinking on the role cities can play in tackling climate change.
The event in Leeds will examine how partnership working might turn the challenge of climate change into lucrative opportunities. It will study:
Green Council procurement that creates competitive advantages for applicable local suppliers;
Localised energy infrastructures, generating cost effective energy for industry with the potential to sell excess back to the grid; and
Local government support for industry in developing sustainable energy projects.
Leeds City Council will also talk about the launch of its Leeds Climate Charter, which allows organisations to commit to any of five actions to start reaping the business benefits of improved environmental management.
Keynote speakers will include Coun Steve Smith, executive member for environmental sServices at Leeds City Council, and James Smith, chairman of Shell UK.
Coun Smith said: “Leeds City Council is committed to the climate change agenda, and would urge businesses in Leeds to join us at this event. By working in partnership with the business community we aim to create a low carbon city with a high quality of life.”
James Smith, chairman of Shell UK, added: “Shell’s scenario planning suggests innovation will be vital in a world needing a wide mix of energy sources and energy saving technologies. Cities like Leeds can bring significant change in the energy system, both as major places of energy use and places where innovation thrives.”

Royal Dutch Shell conspired directly with Hitler, financed the Nazi Party, was anti-Semitic and sold out its own Dutch Jewish employees to the Nazis. Shell had a close relationship with the Nazis during and after the reign of Sir Henri Deterding, an ardent Nazi, and the founder and decades long leader of the Royal Dutch Shell Group. His burial ceremony, which had all the trappings of a state funeral, was held at his private estate in Mecklenburg, Germany. The spectacle (photographs below) included a funeral procession led by a horse drawn funeral hearse with senior Nazis officials and senior Royal Dutch Shell directors in attendance, Nazi salutes at the graveside, swastika banners on display and wreaths and personal tributes from Adolf Hitler and Reichsmarschall, Hermann Goring. Deterding was an honored associate and supporter of Hitler and a personal friend of Goring.
Deterding was the guest of Hitler during a four day summit meeting at Berchtesgaden. Sir Henri and Hitler both had ambitions on Russian oil fields. Only an honored personal guest would be rewarded with a private four day meeting at Hitler’s mountain top retreat.
