Shell $5 million USD birthday bribe for the Sultan of Brunei

Bandar Seri Begawan – His Majesty the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam yesterday consented to pay a visit to the new Health Promotion Centre in Berakas.

Royal Dutch Shell has contributed US$5 million towards the establishment of the Health Promotion Centre, which is Brunei’s first ever healthcare resource centre offering a range of innovative and interactive public health education tools and facilities.

At the Health Promotion Centre, His Majesty was greeted on arrival by Pehin Orang Kaya Indera Pahlawan Dato Seri Setia Awg Hj Suyoi bin Hj Osman, Minister of Health; Pehin Orang Kaya Pekerma Laila Diraja Dato Paduka Awang Hj Hazair bin Hj Abdullah, Deputy Minister of Health; and Dr Grahaeme Henderson, Managing Director of Brunei Shell Petroleum SDN BHD.

His Majesty signed a plaque and toured the new building beginning with the Health Galleria, which showcases a variety of informative and interactive displays.

The showcase displays Oral Health, Food Safety,Nutrition, Physical Activities, Mental Health, Tobacco Control, Reproductive Health and an exhibition featuring Brunei Shell Petroleum.

His Majesty also took a closer look at the Weight Management Clinic, Resource Centre and Studios (lecture halls) of the Health Promotion Centre. The monarch also inspected the administration offices, conference rooms and the technician workshop located on the first floor of the new building.

Funding for the centre by Royal Dutch Shell coincided with the commemoration of His Majesty’s 60th birthday in 2006. The construction of the centre began with the laying of the foundation stone in June 2007 and was completed in October 2008.

Sited on two acres of land and constructed in less than two years, the two-storey health promotion centre will serve as a platform to enable people to equip themselves with knowledge, skills and tools to enhance their health, particularly in managing lifestyle-related diseases.

It will also function as a community outreach and development centre, with special focus on providing a comprehensive, effective, steadfast, interactive and innovative health education programs for children and the youth of the country.

The Health Promotion Centre plays a pivotal role in focusing on issues and matters relating to the promotion and the prevention of major chronic diseases. This will further strengthen efforts in raising the nation’s health status trough health promotion and practicing a healthy way of living.

The Minister of Health, Pehin Dato Awg Hj Suyoi said, “The Ministry of Health acknowledges the crucial support from Royal Dutch Shell and Brunei Shell Petroleum for the Health Promotion Centre. It is an excellent example of public-private sector partnership in action.

“We are pleased that Brunei Shell Petroleum has come forward to work with us not only on this major healthcare initiative, but has also taken the lead to team up with us on several other important programs to help improve public healthcare and the Health Promotion Centre is certainly a major milestone in the government’s efforts to provide high quality healthcare for the nation and we are pleased to be a significant part of this initiative,” he added.

Dr Grahaeme Henderson said, “We are delighted that His Majesty has consented to make a visit to the Health Promotion Centre. Public healthcare is a major focus area of Brunei Shell Petroleum’s community development programs, and we have been working closely with the Ministry of Health on a number of important initiatives in this area.”The Health Promotion Centre will be open to the public beginning this Saturday, November 15 from 8am to 4:30pm on working days.   — Courtesy of Borneo Bulletin
