Eight of the 14 Gulf Coast refineries that shut down before Hurricane Ike came ashore are restarting.

Of the rest, Calcasieu’s Lake Charles, La., plant is up and running at reduced capacity. Four others — Exxon Mobil’s Beaumont plant, Valero Energy and Total plants in Port Arthur and Marathon’s Texas City refinery — remain shut down.

Shell expects to start making motor fuels at its Deer Park refinery this week. The Motiva plant in Port Arthur, which Shell co-owns with Saudi Aramco, could start making gasoline and other products by the end of the week, Shell said.

The other restarting refineries include Exxon Baytown, the nation’s largest; BP Texas City, the nation’s second-largest; Valero Houston and Texas City; ConocoPhillips Sweeny; LyondellBasell Houston; and Pasadena Refining.

The closed plants are making post-Ike repairs, awaiting power restoration or need fresh water for cooling towers and steam production prior to restart planning.
