Nigeria: Two Militants Killed At Shell Station

Two unidentified gunmen who attempted to attack an oil flow at Alakri in Okrika local government area were yesterday gunned down by officers and men of the Joint Task Force [J.T.F] in Port Harcourt, Rivers State.

The Joint Task Force (JTF) on the Niger Delta were said to have gunned down the men on Thursday when they wanted to attack the flow station belonging to Shell Petroleum Development Company of Nigeria.

It was also gathered that the fierce looking militants began to shoot sporadically as they approach the site, as a way of chasing away possible resistance.

Unknown to the rampaging hoodlums, JTF men who had been deployed to guard the flow station countered them, killing two members of the armed gang.

As at the time of filing this report, the number of the gang that came for the attack and even those who escaped could not be ascertained, but our correspondent gathered that some of the gunmen had escaped alive while the boat they came with was taken over by men of the JTF.

When contacted, the Public Affairs Manager of the SPDC, Mr. Precious Okolubo said the oil firm’s maintenance crew was on its way to Alakiri oil field when the incident occurred.

He said, “SPDC maintenance crew on its way to Alakiri field in Eastern operations this morning was attacked by a group of gunmen. A nearby security patrol team engaged the gunmen. The SPDC crew has since returned safely to base.”

Confirming the incident, the JTF spokesman in the state, Lt. Col. Sagir Musa added that “in the cross- fire that ensued, two of the gunmen lost their lives, while several other items were recovered from them.

was also reliably informed that the gunmen had gone to the site of the oil flow station in the early hours of Thursday with the intent of bombing it.
