The Nigeria Labour Congress yesterday warned the management of Dutch oil firm, Shell Petroleum Development Company, over plan to sack about 3,500 of its workforce.

Shell, in its ongoing reorganisation as a result of drastic cut in their output due to frequent attack on the company’s operational areas by militants, planned to lay-off some of the workers as the company can no longer cope with the situation.

Speaking with LEADERSHIP in a telephone interview in Abuja yesterday, NLC deputy secretary-general, Comrade Olaitan Oyerinde, said the plans are unacceptable as the union cannot tolerate downsizing of any workers without following the laid down procedure.

Olaitan added, “NLC is ready to do all it can, including mass action, to ensure that none of the workers is victimised by the Dutch company in any way.”

According to him, “We totally condemn in strong terms the plan by the Dutch company to sack about 3,500 workers.

“What that mean is that these people will now be in the street. What would then happen to their family members?” he cautioned.

He lamented that despite the call by the union against casualisation of workers, most oil companies still indulge in such practice which, according to him, is anti-labour.

The union leader called on President Yar’Adua and the oil companies operating in the Niger-Delta area to urgently take steps in ensuring lasting peace in the area, as that would be the only way meaningful development would be seen in the region.
