The record oil price will help BP and Royal Dutch Shell post bumper first-quarter profits tomorrow amid growing concerns about how consumers and businesses will cope with the soaring cost of fuel.

City analysts expect BP and Shell to report quarterly profits of more than £2.5bn each. Brokers are forecasting that Shell will unveil earnings of around $6.7bn (£3.4bn), while rival BP is expected to reveal slightly smaller profits of $5.2bn (£2.6bn). read more

Britain faces six weeks of record petrol price rises in the wake of the Grangemouth oil refinery strike, trade experts have warned.

Officials are expecting to announce the 15th straight day of increases in the average pump prices for petrol and diesel across the UK.

The run started because of the threat of closure of the Grangemouth refinery in Scotland, a consumer research group said, but the impact of the disruption of oil supply will continue to be felt across the UK into June as it heads towards a predicted mark of £1.50 a litre of petrol in some areas. read more

The strike at ExxonMobil’s Nigeria affiliate entered its fourth day Sunday with the shutdown of nearly all of the company’s 800,000 barrels per day output. Gilbert da Costa in Abuja reports talks to resolve the dispute have been constrained by pre-conditions set by the company and union.

Irish Times: New location urged for Corrib refinery

27/04/2008  17:51

Residents of Rossport in Co Mayo have called on Shell E&P to consider a new initiative aimed at resolving the dispute over the location of the Corrib gas refinery.

In a statement issued today, residents urged Shell E&P to consider relocating the Corrib refinery to a more remote and coastal location, which they claimed would resolve all of the problems surrounding the Bellanaboy site in one move.

Three of the men who signed today’s statement were jailed in 2005 as part of the ‘Rossport Five’ group who had strongly opposed the original route of the pipeline.

Rossport residents said today that their stance has “never been anti-gas, but our priority has always been health, safety and the environment, and this remains the case”.

LONDON (MarketWatch) — The U.S. Department of Justice is looking at allegations of corruption by a Halliburton Co. unit in relation to the management of Nigeria’s EA oil platform project, a regulatory filing says.

The probe into Kellogg Brown & Root, which was spun off last year from Halliburton, was known to target its contract to build the Nigeria LNG Ltd. project. OIL giants BP and Royal Dutch Shell will reveal this week that cash has been flowing in as oil prices continue to soar. As a barrel of the black stuff tops $120, it is expected to lift figures at both companies.

City watchers will look for signs of a turnaround at BP after a difficult year in 2007. In particular they want to see evidence of BP chief executive Tony Hayward’s pledge to “close the performance gap” with rivals after annual profits fell by more than a fifth last year. read more

Running on Empty

The Nation: Running on Empty

By MARK HERTSGAARD
This article appeared in the May 12, 2008 edition of The Nation.

It used to be that only environmentalists and paranoids warned about running out of oil. Not anymore. As climate change did over the past few years, peak oil seems poised to become the next big idea commanding the attention of governments, businesses and citizens the world over. The arrival of $119-a-barrel crude and $4-a-gallon gasoline this spring are but the most obvious signs that global oil production has or soon will peak. With global demand inexorably rising, a limited supply will bring higher, more volatile prices and eventually shortages that could provoke–to quote the title of the must-see peak oil documentary–the end of suburbia. If the era of cheap, abundant oil is indeed coming to a close, the world’s economy and, paradoxically, the fight against climate change could be in deep trouble. read more

Oil giants to declare profits of £68bn

Richard Wachman
The Observer, Sunday April 27 2008

BP and Shell will together make record profits of more than $68bn this year if the oil price stays at current levels, according to City forecasters.

Brent crude soared to $116 a barrel on Friday as BP shut down a key North Sea pipeline ahead of industrial action and a strike at Exxon in Nigeria disrupted production. Oil companies are profiting at a time when motoring and consumer organisations are complaining about the price of petrol, which has hit £5 a gallon. BP and Shell will this week report record profits for the first quarter thanks to an oil price that has stood at an average of $110 a barrel since the start of the year. read more

How Big Oil got bigger – and befuddled the pundits

Terry Macalister and Kathryn Hopkins

The past 10 years have been a rollercoaster for energy markets with the price of oil swinging from $10 (£5) a barrel to nearly $120, triggering demands to explore in areas formerly written off as too expensive or too environmentally sensitive such as Canada’s tar sands and the Arctic.

The ratcheting up in the cost of oil and gas should have driven up inflation and led to a switch to alternative fuel sources. Instead, oil companies have recorded the highest ever profits in corporate history as demand continues to outstrip supply. In the process, the industry has reconsidered its strategy to plan for an era of high prices. read more

By IAN TALLEY and COREY BOLES
April 25, 2008

WASHINGTON — Lawmakers cranked up pressure Thursday on the Bush administration to stop filling the nation’s Strategic Petroleum Reserve amid growing election-year anxiety on Capitol Hill about high gasoline prices.

Department of Energy officials have repeatedly said they would continue to fill the emergency reserve under the royalty-in-kind program, which accepts oil from companies in lieu of cash, at a rate of 76,000 barrels a day. They also said they would still consider soliciting bids for a further addition to replace oil sold during the 2005 hurricane season. read more

Electronic Data Systems Corp. said first-quarter earnings fell 62%, yet bookings jumped for the technology-services giant amid a rush of business in a down economy.

EDS appeared to benefit from a tendency of companies seeking greater efficiency in tough economic times by outsourcing some or all of their technology operations. The Plano, Texas, company said it had signed $5.6 billion in contracts in the quarter — up 66% from the same time last year — including a dozen deals of more than $100 million each. Two of the wins were billion-dollar orders from energy giant Royal Dutch Shell PLC and Singapore’s government. read more

Rising nationalism, insufficient talent and scarce supplies are limiting investment opportunities for the world’s major oil companies, leading them to increase share buybacks, said Jim Mulva, chief executive of ConocoPhillips.

Conoco, the US’s third largest oil company, budgets $15bn a year on capital spending. “We, technically, could be spending more,” Mr Mulva said in an interview. “But we have a number of issues or concerns.” read more

From Mr Jos Dings.

Sir, European Union officials must be getting used to the familiar refrain they hear every time an industry sector is asked to cut carbon emissions. But when the latest industry to claim it will be “destroyed” by a flagship European climate policy also happens to be one of the richest and most influential, its arguments warrant a closer look. read more

breitbart.com: Oil prices to double by 2012: Canadian study

Apr 24 03:05 PM US/Eastern

The price of oil is likely to hit 150 dollars (Canadian, US) a barrel by 2010 and soar to 225 dollars a barrel by 2012 as supply becomes increasingly tight, a Canadian bank said Thursday.

The CIBC report says the International Energy Agency’s current oil production estimates overstate supply by about nine percent, since it wrongly counts natural gas liquids — which are not viable for transportation fuel — in its numbers. read more
