Royal Dutch Shell employees and officials will celebrate a two-year collaboration today that earned the company’s tank farm in Port Arthur a coveted “star site” designation from the Office of Safety and Health Administration.

Stan Mays, Shell’s external affairs adviser, said the 30 employees at the Port Arthur Products Station led a “grassroots effort” to obtain the certification, which recognizes workplaces for focusing on safety.

“It’s quite a big deal, it’s quite an involved process,” Mays said. “It’s not like management says ‘we’re going to go get this.’ The employees have to want this.”

The achievement will be acknowledged with a flag raising ceremony and a plaque.

Greg Smith, Shell general manager for the Gulf of Mexico and Mark Briggs, area manager for the safety and health administration, will be present for the ceremony.

It will be the 15th Southeast Texas plant to earn the “Star Site” designation.
