The Tide Online (Nigeria): Senate condemns Shell over oil spillages

Thursday, Nov 8, 2007

The Senate yesterday condemned Shell Petroleum Development Company for its negligence in handling oil spillage and ecological degradation in the Niger Delta region.

The Senate, in a resolution read by Senate President, David Mark, said the company’s negligence at Ikot Ado Udo in Akwa Ibom State had led to loss of people’s livelihood.

Mark urged President Umaru Yar’Adua to direct the Nigeria National Petroleum Corporation, Shell and other multinationals in the area to rectify the oil pump and stop further spillage.

He directed its committee on Upstream Petroleum and Environment to invite both the ministers of state for petroleum and environment to look into the matter.

Mark also directed the committee and that of the judiciary to immediately forward proposals for the amendment of all existing legislation.

He said the legislation would compel the multinational oil companies to respond to any spillage, develop and pay adequate compensation to their host communities.

The resolution followed a motion by Senate Leader, Hon Teslim Folarin, calling the attention of the Senate to the oil spillage.

He said the spillage had led to the destruction of aquatic and farm lands in the state.

The Senate also referred the nomination of 27 persons to its committee on Federal Character Commission (FCC) for confirmation.

Yar’Adua had asked the Senate to confirm the nominees as members of the commission
