Port Harcourt— TO steer  Asarama community in Andoni local government area away from the path of crisis and violence, the Rivers state government has been urged to quickly stop Shell Petroleum  Development   Company from carrying  out any operation in the area until some conditions were met.

Listing the conditions , the community in a statement from its youth group signed by the duo of Comrade Kafiam Mark and Joseph Sokari said the oil giant should pay compensation to family victims of its pipeline explosion in the area on December 2005. Adding also that the firm should resume talk with its community project management committee which  it had earlier signed an MoU with on behalf of the community about three years ago.

The statement which also insisted that their MoU must be implemented before the oil giant should resume operations further dissociated the youths from “any purported power of attorney given to anybody to have dealing with SPDC on behalf of our community.”

“Having discovered these grave designs to cause communal clash and blood letting in Asarama, we therefore call on the Rivers state government to please stop SPDC from carrying out the operation in our territory until the company liaises with the former committee set up from Asarama that has been dialoguing with SPDC as mediated by the state government through the office of the SSG, a dialogue that gave birth to the MoU  between  Shell and Asarama in June 2004”.  The statement also insisted that SPDC should implement the content of the said MoU and pay compensation to the families of those who died and lost their properties  in the SPDC’s pipeline explosion, which occurred on 20th December.
