MOSCOW, November 9 (Itar-Tass) – Sakhalin Energy company, the operator of Sakhalin-2 offshore oil and gas project has filed a plan of nature conservation measures with the Russian Ministry of Natural Resources, Igor Ignatyev, the company’s vice-president for corporate issues said.
“The plan was compiled with account of results of a recent trip to Sakhalin by Natural Resource Minister Yuri Trutnev,” Ignatyev said.
He added that the company managed to meet the deadline that Trutnev had set for presenting a plan aimed at eliminating the shortcomings of environmental legislation.
“The document includes a schedule of detailed nature conservation steps along the entire route of the Sakhalin-2 pipeline,” Ignatyev said. “These measures are both short-term and long-term. The plan includes programs for construction teams training and steps to tighten control over compliance with environmental requirements.”
“This comprehensive document offers a good overview of Sakhalin Energy’s operations,” he indicated.
The ministry’s officials confirmed reception of the plan, saying Minister Trutnev is studying it.
In the meantime, a source at the Federal Service for Nature Conservation Monitoring said government officials expected a plan for eliminating infringements on environmental laws.
“The project of some sections of the pipeline will simply have to be overhauled,” the source said.
“For instance, the company will have to build overpasses over the fish-spawning rivers that have been filled with soil,” Oleg Mitvol, a deputy director of the service said Thursday.
“Our service is completing a handover of documents to the Prosecutor General’s Office,” he said.
Estimation of the damage incurred during construction works under the Sakhalin-2 project will begin next week, he said.
“The bulk of questions deal with the damage done to Aniva Bay and the marine water area,” Mitvol said adding that experts from international organizations and researchers from the Russian Academy of Sciences will be invited to do the estimates.
