István Kapitány, the former chairman and chief executive of Shell Hungary, has been appointed Vice President of Shell’s retail business in central, southern and eastern Europe.

“As far as we know, no Hungarian manager has ever been appointed to a similarly high position at an international energy company,” said Eva Fenichel, CEE issues manager at Shell Hungary Zrt.

The move follows a successful four-year period during which Budapest-born Kapitány, 44, has overseen Shell’s retail operations in Germany, Austria, Poland and Switzerland.

In this time, Shell’s share of a fiercely competitive auto-fuels market has increased to 22%, according to independent estimations. This has been against a background of a declining market due to the introduction of increasingly fuel-efficient engines.

HAMBURG-BASED

Kapitány, who holds a degree in business administration, began his career with Shell in 1987.

Since then his managerial positions have included responsibility for Shell’s retail business in South Africa, Greece, Turkey, central and eastern Europe and some Asian markets.

In his new role, Kapitány, who will continue to be based in Hamburg, will be responsible for Shell’s retail businesses in Greece, Italy, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary, Bulgaria and Gibraltar.
