Itar-Tass: Resistance mounting to Sakhalin Energy inspectors – Mitvol

MOSCOW, October 17 (Itar-Tass) – The attempt to protect nature in the Sakhalin-2 project has entered a vital phase, as inspectors from the Federal Nature Usage Supervisory Services encounter mounting resistance, service deputy head Oleg Mitvol told Itar-Tass on Tuesday.

Acting head of the Sakhalin department of the Federal Nature Usage Supervisory Service Dmitry Belanovich has been summoned to the Sakhalin environmental prosecutor’s office for interrogation on October 18.

He was told to present a full list of persons, who verified the compliance with environmental laws on Sakhalin, the Nature Resources Ministry said on Tuesday.

The prosecutors have considered a statement by Sakhalin Energy CEO Ian Craig, who complained about allegedly illegal actions of the service’s Sakhalin department.

Belanovich was also told to present copies of October protocols on violations of environmental laws and a copy of the ordinance by service chief Sergei Say to inspect the development of the Piltun-Astokhskoye and Lunskoye fields, Prime Tass said.

“When they realized that we are determined to stop the violations and put the culprits to justice instead of reaching an amicable agreement, they chose this method,” he said.

“The prosecutors did not respond to the service’s inquiries about Sakhalin violations, but immediately took an action against our inspectors,” Mitvol said. It seems that the Sakhalin environmental prosecutor has decided to repeal results of the inspection. “Arrests are possible even if representatives of the service comply with the law,” he said.

Mitvol, who recently came back from Sakhalin, lamented on Monday that local inspectors of the Federal Nature Usage Supervisory Service were not independent and they had to send inspectors from other regions. For instance, Moscow inspectors are doing the job on Sakhalin, he said. “This is the only way we can get reliable information about the true state of affairs,” he said.
