A top oil company executive will address the Greater Phoenix Chamber of Commerce later this month, discussing energy supplies, foreign oil and roller coaster gasoline prices.

Shell Oil Co. president John Hofmeister will keynote the chamber’s Phoenix Forum event Oct. 12 at the Arizona Biltmore Resort & Spa.

Big oil companies such as Shell, ExxonMobil, BP and Chevron have come under intense criticism in recent quarters due to high gas prices earlier this year, record profits and questions about possible antitrust violations.

Hofmeister will talk to the Phoenix chamber about energy issues and how he believes the key is not to eliminate foreign oil supplies but instead diversification.

Arizona Gov. Janet Napolitano, Attorney General Terry Goddard (both Democrats) and Arizona Congressman Rick Renzi, R-Flagstaff/Florence, are among lawmakers who have been critical of big oil.

Democratic shopping center developer Jim Pederson has also made “big oil” an issue in his challenge of GOP U.S. Sen. Jon Kyl.

Kyl has received campaign contributions from the energy sector and Pederson say the Republican is too cozy with the industry and Bush administration.

Kyl points to the fact that he has voted against some industry-backed energy measures.

Tickets to the Shell Oil executive’s speech are $60 per person or $575 for a table of 10.
