I was delighted to read your report (Irish Independent, May 5 ) that Mr Andy Pyle, Managing Director of Shell, had apologised to the people of Mayo affected by Shell's actions in relation to the building of the Corrib gas pipeline (“Hopes of breakthrough as Shell says sorry over Rossport Five jailings”).

According to this report, Mr Pyle indicated that he was willing to discuss again the possibility of an offshore platform to process the gas at sea.

Imagine then how quickly this delight turned to dismay when I read the very next day that Mr Pyle never had any intention of discussing this prospect (“Offshore platform at Corrib 'not viable'”).

These slippery statements by Mr Pyle are a clear indication that Shell are committed to nothing except making the maximum profit possible from the Corrib gas field, even if this comes at the price of the safety concerns of Irish citizens.

The Government sold Shell and its partners the rights to exploit the Corrib gas field, not to exploit the people of Mayo, and I firmly believe that the decision on how to bring this gas offshore should be taken with the utmost regard for the concerns of those people affectedby it.
