Shell Internet Censorship

“One of the principles underlying all of our work on the Web has been that we should be true to the spirit of New Shell. This means that we are seen to be open, listening, interested in the views of others…”: SHELL CENSOR – MARCH 1999

Shell Internet Censorship

Shell data hackers hoped to kick-off ‘revolution’

ITPRO

A document released with the stolen database suggests Shell could face more breaches.

By Richard Thurston, 16 Feb 2010 at 15:13

A lengthy document sent by allegedly disillusioned Shell employees to leading environmental and human rights activists sought to launch a corporate revolution at the oil giant.

The document, which was given to IT PRO, was attached to a leaked database containing contact details of nearly every Shell employee. It was sent by 116 disillusioned full-time employees in the US, the UK and the Netherlands to Greenpeace and other campaign groups active in Nigeria.

The document contained information on how the contact database could be used change the way Shell operates, by influencing employees, the public, top institutional investors and non-governmental organisations. read more

Shell guilty of allowing worlds biggest breach of employee details

By John Donovan

Shell media spin machine went into overdrive last week trying to downplay the worlds biggest ever leak of employee details, including personal information, which Shell Ethics boss Richard Wiseman, has twice admitted puts the safety of some employees at risk.

A copy of a related email from Mr Wendel Broere, Group spokesman, Global media relations, Shell International B.V, desperately engaged on a damage limitation exercise with the news media, was leaked to me on the day it was sent. My role is discussed in the email, no doubt because I am the person who broke the story which turned into a global PR disaster for Shell, with all kinds of unwelcome repercussions, including an investigation by the Information Commissioners Office and the prospect of a fine for being reckless with confidential employee data. read more

Shell hit by massive data breach

The Register

Posted in IT Director, 15th February 2010 09:20 GMT

By John Oates

Shell has been hit by a massive data breach – the contact database for 176,000 staff and contractors at the firm has been copied and forwarded to lobbyists and activists opposed to the company.

John Donovan, an activist who received the database, said he had voluntarily destroyed the files. But he warned that other copies were available online.

The email supposedly comes from 176 “concerned staff” to highlight Shell’s activities in Nigeria. The database is about six months old and could have been released by a recently-laid off staff member, or there could really be a rogue campaign group within Shell.Richard Wiseman, chief ethics and compliance officer at Royal Dutch Shell, wrote to staff last week after the breach emerged. read more

ADVICE: Shell employees at Tullos have been told not to be alarmed

A DATA leak has put Shell oil workers in danger from cyber-criminals and environmental activists, it was claimed today.

A Shell database containing details of 102,000 employees and contractor information was accessed and sent out from the firm, which has a major base in Aberdeen.

The information includes private addresses and mobile phone numbers.

Among those to be sent the details were British blogger John Donovan who said the personal details could be used to dupe staff and put workers in dangerous situation. read more

Shell staff details leaked to campaign groups

Financial Times

By Ed Crooks in London

Published: February 11 2010 23:16 | Last updated: February 12 2010 00:10

Royal Dutch Shell has suffered a serious breach of security after contact details for more than 170,000 employees and contractors were e-mailed to environmental and human rights campaign groups.

The database, from Shell’s internal directory, gives names and telephone numbers for all the company’s workforce worldwide, including some home numbers used for business. The e-mail was ostensibly sent by disaffected staff calling for a “peaceful corporate revolution” at the company. read more

Shell Personnel Data Leaked To Protest Groups-Sources

LONDON (Dow Jones)–A database containing contact details of tens of thousands of employees of Royal Dutch Shell PLC (RDSB) was passed to non-governmental organizations critical of the company and environmental groups that have targeted it in past protests, people familiar with the matter said Tuesday.

The database contains contact details, including mobile phone numbers and home postcodes, for every Shell employee, workers at the company’s joint ventures and some contractors. It isn’t clear if the groups will take any action with the data they received, the people told Dow Jones Newswires. read more

Threat to the privacy and safety of thousands of Shell employees

POSTINGS TODAY ON SHELL BLOG…

It is Shell that has acted in a cavalier way with other people’s personal data, otherwise the Shell Address Book could not have been circulated to hostile parties, including Nigerian activists.

Posting by “Anonymous”

John, given your oft-expressed criticism of Shell’s supposed lack of concern for safety and disregard for its legal responsibilities, can you explain why you chose to trumpet the theft of Shell’s employee database on your website and even made facetious offers to pass it on to others? You must surely know that this information is a) stolen property and b) a potential threat to the privacy and safety of the thousands of people whose personal information it contains. If Shell had behaved in such a cavalier way with other people’s personal data, you would no doubt have jumped all over them. So why the double standard? And since the database is stolen property, will you be returning it to Shell and will you provide information to the authorities to assist them in investigating the theft? After all, you can’t expect Shell to respect the rule of law if you aren’t prepared to do so yourself. read more

The current out of control situation for Shell in relation to the website royaldutchshellplc.com speaks volumes about the laughable incompetence of its senior management and Shell’s army of in-house and external lawyers.

Days later, on 21 March 2007, Shell initiated an IT project to “monitor internal e-mails from Shell servers globally to Donovan and is also monitoring web traffic to determine internal traffic to their website”. Age discrimination at Shell: a message directed at Shell Ethics Chief Richard Wiseman

Interesting that this posting on our Shell Blog, raising the issue of age discrimination in the restructuring process, is directed at Shell veteran Richard Wiseman, the Chief Ethics & Compliance Officer of Royal Dutch Shell Plc who is close to retirement age.

FROM A SHELL INSIDER

A POSTING ON SHELL BLOG BY rockdude1950 on Dec 6th, 2009 at 2:51 pm

Shell encourages anyone with knowledge of activities that go against the company’s code of conduct to step forward and bring those activities to the attention of the Ethics and Compliance manager. The reorganization has provided many examples of actions that violate not just the code of conduct, but the laws of several countries in which Shell operates. I use this way to bring these actions to the attention of the Ethics and Compliance manager since I do fear retribution and a witch hunt, even with all the assurances to the contrary. The violations permeate throughout the process and come down from the high level in the EC. read more

LEAFLET BEING DISTRIBUTED AT SHELL CENTRE, LONDON, WEEK COMMENCING 26 OCTOBER 2009

Domain name battle for Royal Dutch Shell Plc .com (guess who lost)

By John Donovan of royaldutchshellplc.com: Oct 2009

Only Shell could end up in the humiliating position of its arch critics owning the dotcom domain name for the unified parent company Royal Dutch Shell Plc.

Richard Wiseman, currently RDS Chief Ethics & Compliance Officer, has publicly boasted that he was the conductor of the legal orchestra responsible for creating the unified company from the ashes of the Shell Transport/Royal Dutch structure destroyed by the reserves fraud.

Unfortunately, he forgot to ensure that the top-level domain name for the new company was secured before the name of Royal Dutch Shell Plc was publicly revealed. Imagine the shock and horror when Shell executive directors discovered the identity of the party who had beaten them to the precise dotcom domain name for the company: my father, Alfred Donovan (now 92 yrs old). read more

ROYAL DUTCH SHELL USING BULLY BOY TACTICS TO THWART LAWFUL PROTEST IN LONDON

Subject: ROYAL DUTCH SHELL USING BULLY BOY TACTICS TO THWART LAWFUL PROTEST IN LONDON

Dear Boris

I currently have a team of three people on most business days distributing Shell related leaflets in the vicinity of the Shell Centre in York Road, Waterloo. The main thrust of allegations set out in the leaflets are not directed at ordinary Shell employees, many of whom work in fear of being “culled” or forced to reapply for their own jobs, but against their ruthless fat cat bosses. read more

THE SHELL “SMART” HIGH COURT TRIAL

By John Donovan of royaldutchshellplc.com: Oct 2009

Some Shell employees may be puzzled why our leaflets are being distributed at Shell Centre a decade after a trial regarding the origin of the Shell SMART loyalty card had ended, supposedly in “stalemate”, with me withdrawing all allegations of impropriety against Shell in a so-called “joint statement”. In reality the “stalemate” announcement was a face-saving fabrication conjured up by Shell lawyers.

Shell settled the litigation in the midst of the cross-examination of a dishonest Shell manager AJL at the heart of all of our four High Court actions. Shell had already settled our first three claims. Scrutiny of his diaries and other documents released to us in discovery revealed that he was a disgruntled employee on the make. He had masterminded a corrupted tender process for our multi-partner loyalty card scheme, had stolen confidential IT property from numerous parties, including us, and funnelled them all to an agency with whom he had a close personal “private” relationship. read more

Question for Shell Ethics Chief, Richard Wiseman about Shell alleged use of asbestos

Posted on Shell Blog by “FE”

Dear Mr Wiseman

Can you please let me know if Shell used asbestos in their coal gasification plant in Dong Ting?

If yes, did Shell decide to remove the asbestos (providing a safe working environment) or did Shell decided for cost reasons to take no further action?

Who will take care of the asbestos during operation and maintenance?

Information added by royaldutchshellplc.com

Why is asbestos dangerous?

Breathing in air containing asbestos fibres can lead to asbestos-related diseases, mainly cancers of the lung and chest lining. read more

Subject: Leaflet Distribution Outside Shell Centre

Dear Mr Wiseman

Because of various circumstances outside of our control (e.g. rain) it has become obvious that it is impractical to advise you of the precise days and times when the leaflets will be distributed, or how many people will be involved on a particular day. I think the best we can say is that the leaflets will be handed to Shell employees most business days of the week. read more

I promised to let you know when we intend to recommence the distribution of leaflets at Shell Centre.

This will happen at 11am on Monday.  A team of three people will hand out the leaflets. They have been instructed to do so in a friendly  manner and not to cause any obstruction. There will be no shouting or  disorder. No protest banners. Just leaflets. They will obey  instructions from your security staff on where they can stand to hand out the leaflets on public property to people entering Shell Centre. read more

RIGGED SHELL CONTRACT TENDER

RIGGED SHELL CONTRACT TENDER

By John Donovan of royaldutchshellplc.com

Although this story relates to events that occurred years ago, it reveals the hypocrisy of two people at the top of Shell, Malcolm Brinded and Richard Wiseman.

Both have made speeches proclaiming the importance of Shell’s General Business Principles pledging honesty, integrity and transparency in all of Shell’s dealings.

Wiseman stated in an anti-corruption speech:

“A reputation for integrity is a priceless asset which can vanish or be severely tarnished by a single error of judgment. Shell Core Values: Honesty, Integrity and Respect for People underpin everything we do and are the foundation of our Shell General Business Principles.” read more

Shell Chief Ethics Officer Richard Wiseman Refutes Accusations

The statement that "Shell has never been involved in “atomic” or “nuclear” research at the Thornton site or elsewhere in the U.K." appears to be at odds with allegations made by former Shell employee James Featherstone, in a letter he sent on 2 May 2009 to Detective Inspector Nick Sumner c/o Homicide & Serious Crime Command at New Scotland Yard.

The false bravado of Shell Ethics Chief Richard Wiseman

John Donovan

In an email dated 11 November 2005, Shell International General Counsel Richard Wiseman (now the Chief Ethics & Compliance Officer of Royal Dutch Shell Plc) dismissed our website in the following words:

“The extraordinary tolerance shown to your internet activities ought to demonstrate better than anything else the fact that we are uninterested in, and unmoved by, your current activities.”

Wiseman’s bravado was undermined by the fact that we already had evidence to the contrary from an email about us that he sent on 24 June 2004 to Shell CEO Jeroen van der Veer and his fellow Executive director, Malcolm Brinded. Wiseman informed them that he was contacting Sir Mark Moody-Stuart (a former Shell Group Chairman) about us. Wiseman’s email (supplied to us by a high level insider source) also confirmed that Shell “PX” was briefed and ready to react behind the scenes to our activities. read more

Gale Norton investigation: the Stink of Royal Dutch Shell Corruption

The criminal investigation by the US Justice Department into former Interior Secretary Gale Norton and the award of oil shale leases to the oil company Shell, which subsequently became her employer, comes as no surprise. The stink of corruption is long-lasting, as Shell is aware.

For more than two years, I have publicly drawn attention to this subject, including comments posted on a Denver Post article.

One moment Norton was the head of a US government department negotiating multibillion dollar agreements with Shell, the next (months later) she was working for Shell. This was blatantly improper and against the public interest. It smelt to high heaven.

Massive Shell Job Cuts, Again

By John Donovan

There is nothing new about Shell making massive job cuts.

It happened most recently, a decade ago, under Shell Group Chairman Mark Moody-Stuart. In those days the panic driven restructuring was called “Transformation”, whereas under Peter Voser, it’s called Transition 2009. Basically the same unpalatable medicine, under a different name. Unfortunately, then, as now, the doctor prescribing the medicine, benefits financially from the treatment. Hence the danger of an overdose. read more

Corporate spying

By John Donovan

On 16 August, the Financial Times published a major article about the growing use of private investigators by corporations intent on digging for information (dirt) on perceived opponents.

German state prosecutors are considering a criminal investigation of Deutsche Bank after the bank targeted Michael Bohndorf, a shareholder and vocal critic.  In response, the bank employed private investigators who allegedly set a “honey trap” and engaged in “an operation that could have come from a spy novel“.  The bank is also under investigation from financial and data protection watchdogs. Deutsche Bank senior executives claim they were unaware of the admitted “overzealous surveillance“. read more

Shell/Motiva CEO Bob Pease dragged into Tom Purves controversy

By John Donovan

The following is a self-explanatory email I sent earlier today to Robert (Bob) Pease, President & Chief Executive Officer of Motiva Enterprises LLC, which is jointly owned by a subsidiary of Saudi Aramco and Shell.

From the Motiva Website:

Formed in 1998, Motiva Enterprises LLC operates primarily in the eastern and southern United States. Its operations include nearly 7,700 Shell-branded gasoline stations, three refineries with a combined capacity of 740,000 barrels per day, and ownership interest in 41 refined product storage terminals with an aggregate storage capacity of approximately 19.8 million barrels. read more
