LONDON — Royal Dutch Shell, Europe’s largest oil company, surprised markets on Tuesday by naming Ben van Beurden to succeed Peter Voser as chief executive on Jan. 1.

Mr. van Beurden, a Dutch national who is 55, has headed Shell’s large marketing and refining business since January and has been a key player in its liquefied natural gas business, in which Shell is the world leader among publicly traded oil companies.

He was chosen by Shell’s board over better-known candidates including Andrew Brown, head of exploration and production; Marvin Odum, head of the company’s Americas business; and Simon Henry, the chief financial officer, well-known to investors. read more

Royal Dutch Shell Plc (RDSA) unexpectedly named refining boss Ben van Beurden to succeed Chief Executive Officer Peter Voser as Europe’s largest oil company looks to manage rising capital spending.

Van Beurden, who will take over in the New Year, has led the company’s downstream unit, which refines crude and sells products to consumers, since January and was previously head of the chemicals business. THE HAGUE | Tue May 21, 2013 9:35am EDT

(Reuters) – The hunt for Royal Dutch Shell’s (RDSa.L) next chief executive is underway, its chairman said on Tuesday, after CEO Peter Voser made what could be his last appearance at the oil group’s annual shareholder meeting.

Voser announced his surprise decision three weeks ago to step down in the first half of 2014, before his 56th birthday, and less than five years into the role.

Shell’s succession plans in focus at annual meeting

THE HAGUE | Tue May 21, 2013 12:05am BST

May 21 (Reuters) – Royal Dutch/Shell CEO Peter Voser may be making his last appearance on the podium at the company’s annual shareholder meeting on Tuesday, turning the spotlight on management’s plans for a successor.

Voser announced his surprise decision three weeks ago to step down in the first half of 2014, before his 56th birthday, and less than five years into the role.

Employees of the 180-year old Anglo-Dutch group, which traditionally grows its own top executives, believe an import is unlikely to get the top job, but Voser is only the second person to hold the CEO role under a simplified corporate structure introduced in 2005. read more

THE RACE FOR VOSERS JOB

Screen Shot 2013-05-03 at 09.48.24With regard to your most obvious rivals, Simon Henry seems to be a very intelligent, competent executive, but comes with the baggage of his starring role in the reserves scandal. I published our verdict. Based on my strange experience of communicating with Marvin Odum via RDS Plc Company Secretary Michiel Brandjes, I reached the conclusion that Mr Odum is a creep. As the New York Times has correctly speculated, he carries “the stigma of the Alaska debacle.”

As you may recall, we published a leaked email from you minutes after you sent it, the content of which, with my normal lack of tact, I described as drivel.

According to press reports you are a candidate in the race for Peter Vosers job, along with Simon Henry and Marvin Odum.

Perhaps I have read too many gossip columns, but I find the carefully constructed formulation of the resignation quote attributed to Mr Voser rather odd. read more

LONDON — Royal Dutch Shell’s chief executive, Peter Voser, plans to retire next year, after a decade in top management jobs in which he helped the company recover from an accounting scandal and become the world leader in liquefied natural gas and related businesses.

Mr. Voser, 54, made the unexpected announcement as Shell reported first-quarter profit that reflected only a modest gain from a year earlier but still exceeded analysts’ expectations.

“After such an exciting executive career I feel it is time for a change in my lifestyle and I am looking forward to have more time available for my family and private life,” Mr. Voser said Thursday in a statement. One-on-one with Shell Oil president Marvin Odum

The U.S. will always need our oil.

James Cowan

Marvin Odum’s job titles could fill several business cards. He is president of Shell Oil Co. in the United States, and sits on the executive committee of Royal Dutch Shell, its parent company. But for Canadians, his most important role is serving as the executive director of Shell Upstream Americas, where he supervises exploration and production across the Western Hemisphere. Falling within his portfolio are the company’s Canadian operations, including the Athabasca oilsands project and its growing interests in liquefied natural gas (LNG), including a proposed export terminal in Kitimat, B.C., with a rumoured price tag of more than $12 billion. The company is also at the forefront of efforts to change the oilsands’ poor environmental image, investing in the $1.35-billion Quest project, which captures carbon emissions from oilsands operations and buries them beneath the surface. While seen as a pilot project for the industry, it also took millions in provincial and federal government support to launch. In an interview with Canadian Business deputy editor James Cowan, Odum spoke about whether the Keystone XL pipeline will ever receive U.S. approval, why cap-and-trade is good for industry, and what it will take for Canada to become a world leader in LNG. read more

SHELL SENT WORLDS OLDEST MOST ILL-PREPARED DRILLING SHIP TO ALASKA?

Screen Shot 2013-01-11 at 20.09.51According to our whistleblower source, the entire rebuild and preparation was carried out at a reckless pace and the Noble Discoverer departed on its way to New Zealand without even being certified. As a consequence of the botched processes, the ancient ship repeatedly broke-down on the high seas during the move to New Zealand. Because almost everything went wrong, the well it had attempted to drill had to be abandoned before reaching its objectives so that the jinxed drilling ship could be moved to the Arctic with all speed. The magnitude of the fiasco has been such that Ken Salazar, the U.S. Secretary for the Interior, has recently written off Shell’s whole Arctic Campaign as a “screw-up.”

Shell CEO Peter Voser and the Arctic Fiasco

Screen Shot 2013-03-20 at 09.53.55 In February 2011, Peter Voser, who can be compared with Custer for leading an ill-advised charge, was becoming irate about the delays stating: “I’m not prepared to take the uncertainty and pay the money and then not get to the drilling,”; “We need urgent and timely action on permitting to go ahead with the 2012 drilling program.”

By John Donovan

It is appropriate, in view of Shell’s Arctic debacle, properly condemned by the U.S. government, to reflect on the campaign by Shell to lead the anticipated exploration charge into the pristine Arctic/Alaskan waters.

Shell promised that it was fully prepared and pressed heavily to get underway, steamrolling serious misgivings by many parties.

Shell took an aggressive approach to such opposition, obtaining an injunction against Greenpeace to prevent any interference.

As has become abundantly clear, Shell was wrong and those with misgivings were proved right. read more

Safe harbor, uncertain future for Shell’s Arctic rig

By Jennifer A. Dlouhy | January 7, 2013 | Updated: January 7, 2013 11:01pm

WASHINGTON – A massive campaign to free a grounded Arctic drilling rig that involved more than a dozen ships and some 730 people cleared a big hurdle Monday, as salvagers pulled the vessel to safe harbor in Alaska.

Salvage crews anchored the Kulluk rig in Kodiak Island’s sheltered Kiliuda Bay, where it arrived Monday morning. Three support vessels remained attached to the Kulluk.

For Shell, which owns the 266-foot conical drilling unit and planned to use it to continue a $5 billion quest for Arctic oil this summer, the work is just beginning. read more

Noble Sees Shell’s Alaska Rig Ready for Drilling in 2013

By Jim Polson – Dec 27, 2012 7:20 PM GMT

Noble Corp. (NE) expects to have its Noble Discoverer rig ready for Royal Dutch Shell Plc (RDSA) to resume drilling in Alaska’s Chukchi Sea next year, after fixing issues raised during a U.S. Coast Guard inspection.

The Coast Guard determined the ship’s propulsion and safety management systems need attention, the Zug, Switzerland-based company said in a statement today. Noble expects to fix the ship before the Arctic drilling season begins when sea ice clears in six months or so, said John Breed, a company spokesman in Sugar Land, Texas. read more

Why Shell’s bigger U.S. footprint matters

Shell exec sees domestic production as a selling point for investors

Shell oil rig off the coast of Alaska: Photo credit: Shell Oil Company

By Steve Gelsi, MarketWatch

NEW YORK (MarketWatch) — When filling up your gasoline tank in the next few years, Royal Dutch Shell wants you to know they’re working to increase the share of the fuel pumped out of Uncle Sam’s back yard.

Shell Oil Co. President Marvin Odum sees Royal Dutch Shell’s RDS.A +0.06%  growing presence in the U.S. as a selling point for investors.

“I think Wall Street probably does care about a strong country, and there’s an aspect of producing your own resources that definitely plays into that.” Odum said in an interview at the Platts Global Energy Outlook Forum. “The real question you have to come down to in the end is are these economically competitive projects to go after? The answer is yes they are.” read more

Shell sees big output boost from Chesapeake acreage buy

Ernest Scheyder and Joshua Schneyer Reuters: 10:46 a.m. CST, November 29, 2012

NEW YORK (Reuters) – Royal Dutch Shell expects “years and years” of production from oil and natural gas acreage it recently bought from Chesapeake Energy Corp and plans to add more drilling rigs, the head of Shell’s Americas operations said on Thursday.

Shell paid $1.94 billion last September for 618,000 acres in the Permian Basin, a vast oil and natural gas source in western Texas.

Shell and other global energy companies, including Exxon Mobil Corp and Chevron Corp , are buying more oil and gas assets in North America to boost production in a sector where most resources are located and tightly controlled by countries like Brazil and Russia. read more

Shell Oil Delayed in Arctic Departure

Popular Mechanics-17 hours ago: Shell Oil Delayed in Arctic Departure. The company ended its drilling operation in the Chukchi and Beaufort seas more than a week ago but is …

COMMENT: This article is very interesting because it addresses directly an allegation I made some time ago, i.e., that Shell was abandoning oil production wells without plugging them. As such these wells represent an ongoing pollution hazard and wellhead equipment slowly corrodes away. Eventually many of these wells could begin to leak oil and gas, polluting the surrounding environment. Shell clearly has no intention of re-entering these wells and putting them back on production. The reason they were not plugged is that management didn’t want to spend the money to do so, and really didn’t give a flying **** about the future environement and health problems these wells posed for the local populace. I suspect that there are hundreds of old Shell well that have been abandoned but not plugged, and I suspect that many of these wells are now leaking both gas and oil into the surrounding environment. read more

Shell hopeful on Arctic drilling despite setback

By Dan Joling on September 30, 2012

ANCHORAGE, Alaska (AP) — The stars lined up — almost — for Shell Oil to drill exploratory wells this year in waters off Alaska’s north coast.

The Arctic Ocean was on record pace for low sea ice. The Obama administration gave a qualified green light to drilling. Two drill ships and a flotilla of support vessels were staged off prospects.

But as the roughly four-month open water season wound down, Shell announced last week it would limit drilling to “top-hole” work, the shallow but time-consuming preparation for an offshore well. The final straw for the decision: damage during testing Sept. 15 to an undersea containment dome, part of a spill response system that Shell put in place to reassure federal regulators that Arctic offshore drilling could be done safely. read more

Shell’s safety system problems plague Arctic plans

Published September 18, 2012: Associated Press

ANCHORAGE, Alaska –  Safety equipment that Shell Oil volunteered to put into place for drilling off the coast of Alaska is complicating the company’s quest to reach oil-bearing rock during the short open-water drilling season this year.

Royal Dutch Shell PLC announced Monday that a containment dome being tested off the coast of Bellingham, Wash., was damaged Saturday night in its final test. Time needed to repair the damage, on top of delays from ice and waiting for the Alaska Natives’ whaling season to end, figured into a decision to cancel plans to complete exploratory wells this year in the Chukchi and Beaufort seas. read more

Shell president optimistic about Arctic offshore drilling despite setback with safety system

By Associated Press, Tuesday, September 18, 2:56 AM

ANCHORAGE, Alaska — Shell is limiting Arctic drilling off Alaska to just preparation work this year after suffering several setbacks, but the company says it remains optimistic about the project’s prospects.

Netherlands-based Royal Dutch Shell PLC said earlier Monday that a containment dome required to be in place before drills can enter oil-bearing rock in the Chukchi and Beaufort seas was damaged Saturday during testing off Bellingham, Wash.

Environmental groups quickly blasted the company, saying the latest setback and others are evidence the oil industry cannot safely drill in the Arctic. read more

Shell Delays Arctic Oil Drilling Until 2013

A version of this article appeared in print on September 18, 2012, on page B1 of the New York edition

By Published: September 17, 2012

HOUSTON — With the prospect of rich new oil fields in tantalizing reach, Shell Oil announced on Monday that it was forced to put off completing wells in the Alaskan Arctic for another year after a spill containment dome was damaged during a testing accident.

While the company will perform preliminary work this year on several wells in the region, it will not be able to drill for oil until next summer at the earliest.

The latest setback in Shell’s six-year, $4.5 billion effort to drill off the coast of Alaska heartened environmentalists, who have opposed the drilling program at every turn. read more

Shell Oil and pornography

Shell Oil is the only major oil company that allows porn to be sold by independent retailers who sell branded gasoline

Shell Oil Company is the first and only major oil company to define Penthouse and Playboy magazines as “not pornographic.” Shell Oil Company made this policy change to allow Circle K Stores to sell pornographic magazines at two hundred forty (240) independent Shell branded stores that Circle K recently purchased.

Florida Family Association (FFA) has worked since 1997 to influence every major oil company to prohibit their branded independent stores from selling pornography. FFA influenced BP-Amoco, Exxon-Mobil, Chevron-Texaco, Citgo, Marathon, Murphy and Sunoco to add restrictions to their marketing agreements with independent retailers to prohibit the sale of pornography. read more

Saudi- Motiva shutdown may call for Aramco FDI review

The Port Arthur refinery is one of three refineries in the Gulf of Mexico region owned by Motiva Enterprises, LLC, which is another 50-50 joint venture between Saudi Aramco and Shell Oil Company. Its expansion took 5 years and $10 billion to complete. But with the bad news of shutting down the expansion project on June 9, nine days after the opening ceremony, due to fire and unexpected extensive corrosion in the new distillation unit, the company executives declined to answer questions about the duration of the shutdown, causes of the problem, expenses of the repairs and losses of potential revenues.

MENAFN – Arab News – 03/07/2012

By 2005, Saudi Aramco had concluded that oil refining should go side by side with petrochemical production to compensate for the high operational costs or even losses of producing only refined oil products.

This major shift in Aramco’s investment planning was reflected on all but one partnerships and joint ventures.

Locally, Aramco established a joint venture company with Sumitomo Chemical, named Rabigh Refining & Petrochemical Company (PetroRabigh), to operate a 400,000-barrel capacity refinery in Rabigh city on the western coast of Saudi Arabia, which produces naphtha, kerosene, gasoline, diesel, fuel oil and many other petrochemical polymers. read more

Insight: In hours, caustic vapors wreaked quiet ruin on biggest U.S. refinery

(Reuters) – In the end, all it took was a small chemical spill — perhaps less than a barrelful — to bring down the newest, mightiest oil refinery in the United States.

PORT ARTHUR, Texas | Mon Jun 25, 2012 11:50am IST

(Reuters) – In the end, all it took was a small chemical spill — perhaps less than a barrelful — to bring down the newest, mightiest oil refinery in the United States.

Three weeks ago, while workers repaired a minor leak at the Port Arthur, Texas plant owned by Motiva Enterprises, a few gallons a day of so-called “caustic” was inadvertently seeping into the newly built crude distillation unit (CDU), the 30-story-high network of interconnected cylinders and latticed pipelines at the heart of the refining process. read more

Shell Oil Company’s chief U.S. official congratulated the White House for accepting the “strategic importance” of oil resources off the Alaskan coast, but asserted that overall tensions between President Obama and the oil industry prevail. “I think you see a lot and you hear a lot about it being a very stressed relationship, and that’s real,” Shell Oil Company President Marvin Odum affirmed Sunday in an interview with Platts Energy Week TV. “We should just be honest about the fact that that’s real.” read more

Marvin Odum blathering on

FROM A REGULAR CONTRIBUTOR

John,

I just read your latest blog where Marvin Odum (right) blathers on about the strategic importance of Alaska to the domestic energy production future of the US and how Royal Dutch Shell and the White House have found ‘common ground’ on this matter. Really, and to whom besides Shell is it strategically important???

And since when is the White House (or DoI or DoE) considered competent on energy policy issues. Institutionalized competence is the issue here.

The simple fact of the matter is that with proven US natural gas reserves climbing steadily (as a result of advances in drilling technology and exploration in the lower 48 states) it is these on-shore natural gas reserves of the lower 48 state that are of strategic importance to the US. And will be of increasing importance as gas reserves continue to climb. read more

On Alaska, White House and industry find common ground, for a change: Odum

Washington (Platts)–17Jun2012/1248 pm EDT/1648 GMT

Relations between the oil industry and the Obama administration may be strained in many regards, but there is agreement on at least one issue: the strategic importance of developing resources offshore Alaska, Shell Oil President Marvin Odum said in an interview aired Sunday.

While the industry has criticized the administration of slow-walking permit applications for the Gulf of Mexico in the wake of the 2010 Deepwater Horizon disaster, Shell has been successful in getting approval for its plans to drill exploratory wells in the Chukchi and Beaufort seas. read more

Shell hails North American gas potential

The U.S. and Canadian natural gas markets could help China meet its growing energy demand in a clean and sustainable fashion, a Shell executive said.

WASHINGTON, June 11 (UPI) — The U.S. and Canadian natural gas markets could help China meet its growing energy demand in a clean and sustainable fashion, a Shell executive said.

Marvin Odum, upstream director for American operations at Royal Dutch Shell, speaking at the spring policy forum for the Canadian American Business Council, said U.S. and Canadian natural gas markets were ripe for exports.

“Alberta and British Columbia alone are probably sitting on more than 200 trillion cubic feet of competitive natural gas,” he said in his address. “Natural gas production from tight shale and sandstone in the U.S. and Canada nearly doubled between 2005 and 2010.” read more

Royal Dutch Shell PLC says its operational oil spills nearly doubled last year in Nigeria

By Associated Press, Updated: Thursday, April 12, 8:13 PM

LAGOS, Nigeria — Royal Dutch Shell PLC says the number of its operational oil spills nearly doubled last year.

Shell made the statement Thursday in its annual sustainability report, saying it had 63 operational spills in 2011. That’s compared to 32 spills in 2010.

Shell blamed them on restarting pipelines it hadn’t run in some time in Nigeria’s oil-rich Niger Delta over fears of militancy. Shell also said spills came from increasing thefts along its pipelines in the region.

Shell said it spilled 5,300 tons of oil in 2011. The company blamed the majority of that on a spill at its Bonga offshore oil facility in December. By comparison, the company said it spilled nearly 14,000 tons in 2009. read more
