The people of Ogoni ethnic nationality in Rivers State have alleged that the planned resumption of oil exploration activities in the area may be a plot by the Shell Petroleum Development Company (SPDC) and the Nigeria Petroleum Development Company (NPDC) to derail the clean up of the polluted Ogoni environment.

This is as they expressed concern over the slow pace of implementation of the report of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) in Ogoniland and called the Federal Government to speedily put into place the governance structures for the implementation of the report on Ogoniland without further delay.

In a communiqué issued at the end of the Ogoni special congress, held at the Peace and Freedom Centre, Bori in Khana local government area of the state, the Ogonis expressed dismay over the re-introduction of the controversial issue of restarting of oil production in Ogoniland by the Nigeria Petroleum Development Company (NPDC), a subsidiary of NNPC.

The communiqué, which was signed by the President of the Movement for the Survival of Ogoni People (MOSOP), Legborsi Saro Pyagbara, said the controversial issue is coming at a time the Ogoni people and indeed the entire global community is expecting the federal government to move with some deliberate speed in the implementation of the monumental remediation and restoration of the already over-polluted Ogoni environment.

It reads: “Congress notes with dismay the re-introduction of the controversial issue of restarting of oil production in Ogoniland by the Nigeria Petroleum Development Company (NPDC), a subsidiary of Nigeria’s national oil corporation at a time the Ogoni people and indeed the entire global community is expecting the federal government to move with some deliberate speed in the implementation of the monumental remediation and restoration of the already over-polluted Ogoni environment. “Congress observed that many sensitive issues in the entire Shell’s asset divestment and acquisition plans are shrouded in much secrecy and needed to be thoroughly examined.
