Shell Oil will not renew its membership in the American Legislative Exchange Council, citing differences with the controversial corporate lobbying group over the issue of climate change.

“ALEC advocates for specific economic growth initiatives, but its stance on climate change is clearly inconsistent with our own,” said Curtis Smith, a spokesman for Shell. “We have long recognized both the importance of the climate challenge and the critical role energy has in determining quality of life for people across the world.  As part of an ongoing review of memberships and affiliations, we will be letting our association with ALEC lapse when the current contracted term ends early next year.” read more

* Oil majors to focus on Brazil‘s oil, LNG after BG deal

* Shell to sell $30 bln in assets by 2018

By Ron Bousso

LONDON, Aug 7 (Reuters) – Royal Dutch Shell is considering investing billions in Brazil, set to become a focal point after the planned acquisition of BG Group, even as it prepares to sell huge chunks of its business to pay for the $70 bln deal.

Despite a broad drive to cut spending in the face of persistently low oil prices, Chief Executive Ben Van Beurden remains steadfast in his plans to buy BG, which will transform Shell into the world’s biggest liquefied natural gas (LNG) supplier. read more

Asset Swap, Shell Assets for Sakhalin III Piece

By Kostis Geropoulos: 7 August 2015

Despite Western sanctions against the Russian government and businesses, Europe’s biggest oil company Anglo-Dutch Shell has agreed to swap a stake in one of its international energy assets in exchange for a piece of Gazprom’s Sakhalin III project, which involves developing one of the world’s biggest gas reserves.

The two are still deciding which asset to give the Russian gas monopoly, but the deal strengthens an already solid partnership between the two. read more

Oil companies are making the largest cost cuts in a generation to reassure investors. They’re risking their own future growth.

From Chevron Corp to Royal Dutch Shell, producers are firing thousands of workers and cancelling investments to defend their dividends. Cutbacks across the industry total $US180 billion so far this year, the most since the oil crash of 1986, according to Rystad Energy, an Oslo-based energy consultant.

BP chief executive Bob Dudley said last week his “first priority” was payouts to shareholders. Chevron CFO Patricia Yarrington said her company was committed to continuing its 27-year record of annual dividend increases. read more

Shell must match the Nigerian government’s new commitment to tackle oil pollution in the Niger Delta by dramatically improving how it cleans up spills, Amnesty International said today.

President Muhammadu Buhari’s announcement on Wednesday of a trust fund to pay for the clean-up of the Ogoniland region in the Niger Delta is welcome, but if Shell’s ineffective clean-up methods are not fully overhauled, its impact will be limited.

“It is scandalous that Shell – which now wants the world to trust it to drill in the Arctic – has failed to properly implement the UN’s expert advice on oil spill response after so long,” said Mark Dummett, Amnesty International’s Researcher on Business and Human Rights, who has just returned from the Niger Delta. read more

Bill McKibben: Thursday, August 6, 2015

Shell Oil’s icebreaker Fennica is apparently on its way to the Arctic, ending a dramatic week-long siege that saw activists dangle from bridges and blockade the Portland harbor with kayaks, and a federal court threaten environmentalists with heavy fines.

Amid the drama of the action, and the drama of the courtroom, and the outpouring of thanks for activists from Greenpeace, Rising Tide, 350PDX and others, one more thing is worth remembering: There is no more contemptible company on earth than Shell Oil. read more
