The massive plunge in crude oil prices has seen a growing trend of merger activities in the oil and gas sector. Recently, Royal Dutch Shell plc. (ADR) (NYSE:RDS.A) finalized its $70 billion merger deal with BG Group plc. (ADR) (OTCMKTS:BRGYY). The lower crude oil prices pose an ideal time for energy companies to undertake investments at cheaper rates and wait for the prices to go up again.

The deal will allow the two combined company’s to becoming one of the world’s largest LNG producers. However, the massive size of the combined entity will become a sign of concern for the regulators. Thus, Shell along with BG will have to sell assets to win regulatory approval. read more

Seattle’s mayor and environmentalists have vowed to block Royal Dutch Shell PLC from parking two Arctic offshore drilling rigs on Seattle’s waterfront, an effort to thwart the new frontier in oil exploration and spark a national debate about fossil fuels and climate change.

WHAT’S AT STAKE?

The U.S. Geological Survey estimates Arctic offshore reserves at 26 billion barrels of recoverable oil and 130 trillion cubic feet of natural gas.

Shell is now approaching $7 billion in Arctic offshore investment, and plans to drill up to four exploratory wells over two years in the Chukchi Sea to determine whether there are commercial quantities of oil and gas. read more

WA inquiry shines spotlight on floating LNG safety fears

Royal Dutch Shell and Woodside Petroleum have insisted that workers to be stationed on vast floating liquefied natural gas plants far off the Western Australian coast will be safe despite serious concerns having been raised in a parliamentary inquiry that they won’t be evacuated even for severe tropical cyclones.

A WA parliamentary committee examining the safety of floating LNG highlighted fears that workers would be thrown around within their accommodation modules during cyclones and could experience psychological stress at being unable to leave the vessel. read more

By Karolin Schaps:Fri May 8, 2015

May 8 (Reuters) – BG Group said on Friday it was still happy with Shell’s $70 billion takeover bid despite a recent upturn in oil prices that led the company to increase the profit outlook for its liquefied natural gas (LNG) business.

A near 20 percent rise in oil prices since Shell made its agreed bid for BG on April 8, when the cash and shares price valued BG at 47 billion pounds ($72.6 billion), has raised concerns that investors might question that valuation and put pressure on Shell to conclude the deal as quickly as possible. read more

Shell’s involvement with treating workers like slaves?

EMAIL RECEIVED FROM A SHELL CUSTOMER

Hi, I am a Shell customer and live basically 50 yards to my nearest garage. I use my Shell points card and only buy Shell diesel.

Everyday I pass the garage above going to my gym. The garage has a car wash which has not been used for to long. They now have maybe 3 or 4 people who hand car wash employed with the full Shell uniforms on.

I noticed some weeks ago these fellows washing cars and also noticed when they were not washing cars sat on the floor waiting for work to come in. read more

BG Group’s profits slide ahead of Shell deal: RTE NEWS: Friday 8 May 2015

British energy firm BG Group, facing a massive takeover by Royal Dutch Shell, announced a slump in first-quarter profits today in the wake of sliding oil and gas prices.

Profit after tax tumbled 78% to $240m (€214m) in the three months to the end of March compared with $1.11 billion in the first quarter of 2014, BG Group said in a statement.

Revenue dropped 23% to $3.82 billion, “reflecting a significant fall in realised commodity prices”, it added.

Royal Dutch Shell last month announced a takeover of BG Group worth £47 billion, as the pair seek to consolidate their positions in a sector battered by sliding prices.  read more

Shell and high water: the climate battle of Seattle

IF you had to pick a logo for the campaign to wreak climate havoc, you could hardly do better than Shell’s Arctic drilling rig, the “Polar Pioneer.” Climate denial has reached its fullest expression when the melting of the Arctic ice cap is greeted as a signal to drill for more oil where the ice used to be.

This monument to hubris is on its way to Seattle’s waterfront, where Shell hopes to stage its Arctic drilling operations. It will loom large on the Emerald City’s horizon, posing a stark contrast to Seattle icons like Mount Rainier and the Space Needle. A battle begins. read more
