Shell’s Limited Wiggle Room

It may be Halloween but Royal Dutch Shell didn’t have treats to offer investors Thursday… the Anglo-Dutch energy company’s third-quarter results—with earnings excluding the impact of inventories down 31%—showed a business under multiple strains… Its U.S. upstream business continues to lose money. And downstream, with refining margins under severe pressure, earnings dropped by half.

Good Morning Shell shareholders.

Or rather bad morning. Shell’s results are out and it’s deja vu. Earnings are down from $6.2bn to $4.2bn. The shares opened 4% down. At the time of writing this article they are down 5%.

Shell once again appears to be in breach of DTR 2 (Disclosure and control of insider information). There can be no doubt that this fall in profit has been insider information for several weeks now, if only with Simon Henry and Peter Voser, and 5% is a significant fall in share price. So the market disagrees with Shell’s apparent opinion that a Profit Warning under DTR 2 was not required. read more

In legal proceedings, which may prove critical for both physical oil traders and traders in oil-related financial instruments, who should take note for their own possible action, the focus of attention has of last week firmly shifted to a federal trial court in Manhattan for now. The European Commission stating that “[e]ven small distortions of assessed prices may have a huge impact on the prices of crude oil…” concerns all involved and, besides governmental authorities, market participants have their role to play as well in ensuring the integrity of benchmarks and fairness of competition such as through the courts. read more

The Shell Make Money story stretches back several decades. It is a story of spectacular success in terms of a sales promotion catching the public and media imagination, while on two occasions also generating a huge boost in gasoline sales.

Unfortunately the behind-the-scenes story is not so rosy, with Shell engaging in prize-rigging, deception and outright treachery.

Many promotional experts believe Shell Make Money was the most successful sales promotion ever conducted.  Don Marketing, the sales promotion company I co-founded, won an ISP Award for the 1984 promotion. read more

LIBREVILLE, Oct 29 (Reuters) – Gabon has awarded 13 oil and gas blocks to 11 companies as part of a major deepwater licensing round, which the Central African country hopes will double its output to 500,000 barrels per day (bpd), the oil minister said.

The bidding round, which has been delayed for three years, offers a chance for the former OPEC member to reverse a decline in production from a peak of about 370,000 bpd in the 1990s. read more

Wikipedia editing scandal

Wikipedia cannot say that it was not warned long ago about the corrupt practices going on behind the scenes by some members of its volunteer army of supposedly unpaid editors; an unhealthy culture of manipulation, secrecy, bullying and censorship, driven mostly by the root of all evil: money.

By John Donovan

Like many other people, I am a great admirer of Wikipedia and use it frequently.

The Wikipedia organization is laudably conducted on a non-profit making basis, has no subscription charges and does not allow advertising on Wikipedia articles.

It does however have a serious flaw in respect of Wikipedia articles about businesses.

I have rung alarm bells for several years that such articles are wide open to manipulation by anonymous parties with commercially driven motives.

I forecast that an editing scandal would inflict damage to the reputation of Wikipedia. read more

Shell’s mega(lomanic) FLNG project

Screen Shot 2013-10-28 at 11.13.52Have you noticed it has gone a bit quiet around Andy Brown? Heralded as the saviour of the Upstream! He is not making a big impact apparently. And you should keep an eye open for this mega(lomanic) project of the FLNG. A floating LNG unit, described to be so long that it is equal to a par 5 golfhole… It will be the biggest vessel in the world ever, 600,000 tonnes. I would never work on something like this. Too dangerous. Initially perhaps OK, but then a like minded Brinded will come along and see costcutting possibilities. Such as the TFA. And you don’t screw around with gas.

Have you noticed it has gone a bit quiet around Andy Brown? Heralded as the saviour of the Upstream! He is not making a big impact apparently. And quite a few jobs in the upstream are filled by downstream guys but they lack any feel for the business. Shell is still suffering from the generation of American managers that have transformed it to use their and the analysts language. My language would be that they ruined it. And it will take many years to fix the damage of all the short-termism and deterioration of technical skills. But I doubt if Shell will ever really recover. Destroying something good is a lot easier than building something good. If only the past generation of American managers would be half as good as the top technical people they had in abundance in the 70s-90s, Shell would have been still the best company in the world. read more

Oil giants BP and Shell set for slump in profits

Screen Shot 2013-01-11 at 20.09.51

Rival Royal Dutch Shell puts out its third-quarter numbers on Thursday, with analysts at Deutsche Bank warning that they are viewing the update with ‘continuing trepidation’ after a disappointing second quarter.

BP will this week raise its estimate of how much the 2010 Gulf of Mexico spill will cost it as the oil giant and rival Shell report a slump in profits.

Lower refining margins are expected to eat into profits at both firms, while BP will see earnings hit by asset sales and Shell is set to feel the effect of fresh outages in its Nigerian operation.

City analysts expect BP, which will report its third-quarter results tomorrow to deliver ‘clean’ profits – stripping out the effect of oil price movements – of £2bn, down 37pc on last year. read more

BP and Shell profits set to fall by billions

Shell will report that its net earnings have fallen 25 per cent to £4.9 billion, due to its struggles with spills, theft and disruption at its Nigerian operations, as well as higher exploration costs and a weak refining and petrol market. “Unfortunately, ongoing issues in Nigeria, higher exploration charges, losses in Upstream Americas plus a weak downstream environment do not augur well,” Investec said.

BRITISH oil giants BP and Royal Dutch Shell are set to report plunging third-quarter profits this week, with both expected to say that they have been hit by weak refining margins and production outages, according to City analysts.

Aside from tougher market conditions, analysts believe BP’s Gulf of Mexico oil spill legal battles will weigh on its results expected on Tuesday. They predict increased US legal provisions will contribute to profits falling 37 per cent to £4.9 billion.Investec forecasts BP’s arch-rival Shell will report that its net earnings have fallen 25 per cent to £4.9 billion, due to its struggles with spills, theft and disruption at its Nigerian operations, as well as higher exploration costs and a weak refining and petrol market.

“Unfortunately, ongoing issues in Nigeria, higher exploration charges, losses in Upstream Americas plus a weak downstream environment do not augur well,” Investec said.

Deutsche Bank said challenges in Nigeria meant they viewed the quarter with “continuing trepidation” saying that in refining “Shell’s outsized footprint combined with the usual bout of unplanned downtime looks set to cost them dearly.”

Decisive moment approaching in OSSL Shell saga

Screen Shot 2013-10-03 at 17.45.10Consequently it seems that we may now be reaching a decisive moment in this high stakes long drawn out saga, with an inevitable outcome that action will be taken when the Irish Police Ombudsman Commission completes its investigation. Either OSSL directors, whose repeated allegations has resulted in substantial Garda resources being devoted to the investigations, and have provided related witness statements, will surely be prosecuted for wasting police time and for perjury, or there will be serious repercussions for Shell and the relevant Garda officers?

Shell’s former Mr Fixit company in Ireland OSSL, has made a number of serious allegations against Shell E&P Ireland.

The allegation that for understandable reasons, most caught the attention of the news media on an international basis and stunned Irish citizens, is that acting on Shell’s instructions, OSSL purchased and supplied to the Garda enough free booze to quench the thirst of several hundred cops.

Amazingly, senior Garda officers previously named on this website are said to have helped unload the free booze at a Garda police station. None have issued related defamation proceedings against this website or OSSL. None when given the opportunity to comment have denied that OSSL allegations are true. read more

Production from Kansas oil fields comes up short

…many energy companies are scaling back and in some cases even giving up. Shell Oil, which leased 600,000 acres for exploration and development, announced in September it was leaving the state because production from its initial wells didn’t meet its target.

The bloom is off those once rosy predictions for Kansas oil production.

Optimistic energy companies invested more than $1 billion in the state over the last couple of years, hoping that new methods and technology would help them recover gushers of oil and natural gas from underground rock.

But that’s turning out to be more difficult than expected. Production, though ample from some wells, has been less overall than hoped.

As a result, many energy companies are scaling back and in some cases even giving up. read more

Chris Finlayson saw himself as the victim of a brutal Shell regime

In summary, and there was evidence in 1999 to support this to a degree, Finlayson saw himself as a victim of a brutal regime run out of Seafield House where the TFA mode was born and his MD Malcolm Brinded who was frantically doing everything in his power to suppress all this because he was seen by the Audit to be the principal architect of the demise in standards throughout the oilfield.  Finlayson in my book was weak, and ineffective, promoted in my opinion into a position he wasn’t competent or willing to handle.

EMAIL SENT 21 OCT 2013 TO A THIRD PARTY BY BILL CAMPBELL, RETIRED HSE GROUP AUDITOR, SHELL INTERNATIONAL

Subject: Chris Finlayson

My dealings with Chris were a long time ago during an Audit in 1999.  This Audit uncovered remarkably bad behaviour in the then Shell Expro organisation stemming from the business drivers and messages coming from the top of the organisation.

I spent some hours in the presence of Aberdeen auditors trying to get Finlayson to retract his statements made to journalists and the BBC North reporter Colin Wight that the Touch F All concerns raised by workforce representatives were unwarranted whilst in fact the situation was worse, much worse than anyone outside the organisation could have envisaged.  Last December on his appointment as the BG Chief the Independent newspaper (Mark Leftly) run a article on Finlayson titled if I can remember BG Chief breached safety rules when he was at Shell.  Subsequently I wrote a couple of articles putting the meat on the bones of this which John Donovan published.  BG given the right to reply made no comment and to date have not requested the evidence to support although this was offered to them.

Among them are liquefied natural gas (LNG) carriers, some of the world’s biggest ships. Yet all are dwarfed by Royal Dutch Shell’s monster. It is, as Voser puts it, “massive” – and it’s still only half-built. read more

Shell and Iran on Dutch TV

Screen Shot 2012-11-30 at 18.13.21John

Perhaps you can give a little ‘heads up’ to your followers in the Netherlands.

On TV station Nederland 2 there is the programme ‘Tegenlicht’.

Shell apparently refused to cooperate so they did the research on big data available on the internet.

In a preview yesterday evening it was claimed that all will be revealed on the Shell connection with Iran. The actual programme is being aired tonight, Monday 21 October.

It promises to be an interesting event!

Your site is getting too small to capture all the stuff from Shell in Ireland, shalegas disaster, Alaska disaster, looming tarsands disaster, very poor American management, earthquakes in Groningen etc etc. read more

Nigeria’s booming oil theft racket costs $1B a month

Royal Dutch Shell is selling off four of its onshore Nigerian oil blocks because of the constant theft of large volumes oil from its pipelines, officials said.

Oct. 18, 2013

PORT HARCOURT, Nigeria, Oct. 18 (UPI) — Royal Dutch Shell is selling off four of its onshore Nigerian oil blocks because of the constant theft of large volumes oil from its pipelines, officials said. The move highlights the West African state’s growing battle with criminal syndicates that are stealing an average of 100,000 barrels of crude a day. That costs the continent’s second largest economy after South Africa up to $1 billion a month, a criminal enterprise on an industrial scale that officials say rivals the narcotics trade as the world’s most lucrative crime.

Oil industry officials and community workers say this massive theft of Nigeria’s key resource involves crooked politicians, security forces, oil industry personnel and oil traders.

There are also militant groups operating in the oil-rich but impoverished Niger Delta, a labyrinth of swamps and creeks that provide cover for the complex network of crime.

“There’s a sophisticated organization,” says Philip Mshelbila, Shell’s chief of communications in Lagos, Nigeria’s commercial capital. “Clearly it’s not just local. There has to be a wide network.” read more

Shell train wreck in sight?

Screen Shot 2013-07-15 at 07.03.50TIME TO PUT ON THE HARD HATS?

Overall, Shell’s strategy now seems to involve stopping capex and unloading assets in something resembling a fire sale – perhaps to cover the losses in the US, perhaps because it sees a need to fight off a hostile takeover, or perhaps because of the potential liabilities if it is found to have been manipulating the oil price.

ARTICLE BY A SHELL RELATED SOURCE

John

The issue of the licence to operate the Corrib plant should be no more than a formality, but it seems that the EU has become involved in the matter. Giving approval to operate the plant prior to the environmental impact assessment is not very clever, as it implies that the EIA is a formality. On its own, this would be less significant but taken with the warning from the Norwegian government that Shell is in danger of being removed from their list of approved investments, the recent refusal by the UK government to agree to the planning approvals for Shell Centre, and the cancellation of the Chinese project suggests that something more serious is going on.

Of course it may be the potential liabilities associated with the EU price fixing investigation (and the EU has shown repeatedly that it is not beholden to Shell in the same way as the UK and Dutch governments) and it may also be the scale of the US shale gas and Arctic losses. The costs of these losses will fall partly on shareholders, but also to a large extent on the Dutch and UK  governments in the form of reduced tax receipts.

Shell (Voser) has admitted that its investments in unconventionals are not performing and will be sold – although Shell have acknowledged “impairments” of about $2bn this would represent less than 10% of the amount invested: it should be fairly obvious to anyone that after Voser’s comments a much larger loss should be anticipated. Added to the $5bn spent in Alaska, the losses are comparable in magnitude to BP’s losses on Macondo… The difference seems to be that the stock market (but presumably not sovereign wealth funds) does not realise that there is a train wreck coming, or is deluded by Shell’s maintenance of its share price by its continuous stock repurchases. Shell may actually have been operating at a loss for the past couple of years as a result of the Odum/Lawrence US projects.

Total has made no secret of its desire to break free from its franco-centric roots, and has announced that it will be moving some of its operations from Paris to London. Total also complained to the EU about the oil price issue, initiating the current investigation. Could a merger be on the horizon? Perhaps headquartered in London? There is space available! Normally any merger of this nature would involve disposal of some assets, and perhaps Corrib is now on the block along with the Nigerian assets – Chevron might also be interested, but with their ongoing problems in Ecuador and their own disposals in Nigeria, it should not be a surprise that they would not want to take on Shell’s Niger Delta assets.

All of this is summed up quite well in the series of articles from the Daily Telegraph, together with your links at the end of the article. What a mess…. read more

Mayo Advertiser, October 18, 2013.

The Commercial Court on Tuesday granted an order quashing a revised licence which was issued for the Shell gas terminal in north Mayo.

The refinery site at Ballinaboy was granted a revised licence by the Environmental Protection Agency last June to construct a gas terminal, however it is now accepted that that there were defects in relation to how an environmental impact assessment (EIA) concerning the terminal development was carried out.

U.S. ‘over-fracked and over-drilled,’ Shell technology official says: Hype ‘dangerous’

The United States’ oil and gas industry has “over-fracked and overdrilled”, according to Matthias Bichsel, projects and technology director at Royal Dutch Shell Plc.

Screen Shot 2013-10-18 at 10.02.38 By Yadullah Hussain, Financial Post October 17, 2013 11:00 PMThe United States’ oil and gas industry has “over-fracked and overdrilled”, according to Matthias Bichsel, projects and technology director at Royal Dutch Shell Plc.

“The reservoirs don’t need that many wells. The reservoirs don’t need that many stages of fracks, because not all the pieces of the rocks are as good,” Mr. Bichsel said in a telephone interview from Vancouver last week, where he was speaking at a company event.

The United States is on course to become the world’s largest oil supplier, according to PIRA Energy Group, a New York-based energy consultancy.

“The U.S. shale liquids growth of 3.2 million barrels per day over the last four years has been nearly unparalleled in the history of world oil; only Saudi Arabia in 1970-74 raised its production faster,” PIRA said in a statement. read more

Shell to Sea has submitted a tender application to the Department of Energy in response to Minister Pat Rabbitte’s call for expert advice to review the generous oil and gas terms that are currently on offer to oil and gas companies.

The Shell to Sea tender undertakes to “initiate the most thorough, far-reaching inquiry yet into the fiscal regime governing resource extraction in Ireland, taking all voices into consideration and evaluating all available data”. Shell to Sea stated that it would build on the work that had been published in its in-depth 44 page report entitled Liquid Assets, in which the 69 publicly known prospects and discoveries were analysed. This report showed that energy companies estimate the potential fields could contain 21 billion barrels of oil equivalent. Shell to Sea’s tender bid is free of charge as it feels that “assisting Ireland in getting an adequate return from its own oil and gas is payment enough”. read more

It is a “myth” that exports of cheap shale gas from America will cut gas prices in Europe and Asia, Peter Voser, chief executive of Royal Dutch Shell has warned.

America is sitting on a glut of shale gas that has seen prices plummet to as little as a third of UK prices. It is now in the process of developing export terminals where the gas will be cooled for shipping abroad as liquefied natural gas (LNG).

UK politicians have hailed the prospect of Britain importing cheap gas from the US as one solution to help consumers struggling with rising energy bills as domestic gas production dwindles. read more

Shell E&P Ireland Ltd (SEPIL) has played down the significance of yesterday’s Commercial Court decision quashing an emissions licence for the Corrib gas terminal, but the ruling is a setback for the €3 billion project.

Were the project not at least nine years behind schedule, the setback would be far more significant.

However, the lead developer has already conceded that it could be early 2015 before gas is flowing commercially from the field – and that was before last month’s (sept) fatality during work on the final stages, when a German sub-contractor, Lars Wagner (26), lost his life. read more
