By JOE HARRIS: Monday, September 16, 2013

EAST ST. LOUIS, Ill. (CN) – A federal judge certified a class action accusing Shell Oil Co. of contaminating private property near its refinery in Roxana, Ill.

Lead plaintiff Jeana Parko sued Shell Oil Company, Equilon Enterprises dba Shell Oil Products US, ConocoPhillips Company, WRB Refining LP, ConocoPhillips WRB Partner and Cenovus GPCO in Madison County Court in April 2012. The lawsuit was later removed to federal court.

Parko claims she and her neighbors suffered lower property values due to benzene and other carcinogenic chemical releases that have contaminated the groundwater, land and air of Roxana. The emissions are allegedly caused by broken pipelines and the refinery itself. More than 200,000 pounds of pure benzene were released from a pipeline directly into the ground during the time Shell owned the refinery, according to a release from Simmons Browder Gianaris Angelides & Barnerd, the firm representing the class. read more

Petrodollars: A lot of smart oil people caught up in problems at a Motiva plant

By News Desk: September 16, 2013

A big expansion project at the Port Arthur, Texas refinery owned by Motiva–the Shell-Saudi joint venture–has been far from the success story envisioned by the two partners. In this week’s Oilgram News column Petrodollars, Janet McGurty looks at the problems there.

Motiva’s Port Arthur refinery expansion woes have people wondering how it could all go so wrong for a group of companies with so much expertise.

The refinery, which was expanded from 325,000 b/d to 600,000 b/d, is owned by Shell and Saudi Aramco. read more

Texaco Inc. geologist Robert Ryan didn’t suspect he was helping change the energy future of the Gulf of Mexico when he gave the go-ahead for a well that would break the world record for deep-water drilling.

The project known as BAHA, undertaken in 1996 by Texaco and its partners, Royal Dutch Shell Plc (RDSA), Amoco Corp. and Mobil Corp., was a dry hole. That normally would’ve made it a flop. Death by Sandblasting – how production concerns, versus safety of employees, caused offshore deaths

The Shell Chairman and his Legal Counsel accepts that the evidence held by police that offshore staff were afraid to raise permits and had been conditioned by onshore managers to ignore safety procedures over a prolonged period is authentic

This story is about behaviour, bad behaviour.  It is about how offshore workers were bullied, coerced, harassed by onshore management to keep oil and gas production going at all costs and over a prolonged period of time.  It’s about how operators will do what is expected of them if they are put under unreasonable pressure.  It’s about how under these conditions deviation, or bending of rules, leads to breaking rules, and eventually to ignoring rules altogether.  Ignoring rules, despite the consequences, becomes just the normal way of doing things in the Brent oilfield. read more

Brent Bravo Deaths: Information supplied today to Shell and the Police

Screen Shot 2013-09-09 at 17.59.46The first article is attached which I would ask John Donovan if he could kindly print this on his website on 11th September.  In separate correspondence I will pass you the Shell evidence from 1999/2003 which is then cross compared with the prosecution findings and the public inquiry.  In all, 4 or 5 articles will be published which will support the case that Director’s of Shell were culpable in relation to the deaths, and that HSE officials were, by the examination of their own evidence, involved with Misconduct in Public Office. Perhaps the most damaging will be… Shell accepts retention of mentally unstable Manager contributed to offshore deaths…

RECEIVED TODAY FROM MR BILL CAMPBELL, RETIRED HSE GROUP AUDITOR, SHELL INTERNATIONAL. MR CAMPBELL HAS ALSO SENT THE SAME INFORMATION TO ROYAL DUTCH SHELL AND GRAMPIAN POLICE. MR CAMPBELL IS A NORTH SEA EP PLATFORM SAFETY EXPERT, OFTEN CITED IN THE PRESS AND ON TV

By Bill Campbell

We approach the 10 year anniversary of the deaths of Sean McCue and Keith Moncrieff on Brent Bravo on 11 September 2003.  Evidence led at the public Inquiry insinuated they were in part responsible for their own deaths since they carried out work without a permit. During the recent anniversary of Piper Alpha I was approached by a number of journalists to make comment in general re the effectiveness of the safety case regime and I plan to publish a number of articles and provide them with the evidence that they were misled in 2006, a number of journalists lost their jobs, or left their current employer, for daring to go up against the mighty Shell, so I can assure you there is no love lost.  After the investigation by the Procurator Fiscal – read more

Shell corruption scandal that won’t go away

Although numerous people including at Shell and the Garda have been named on this website in connection with the Corrib gas corruption scandal, still no defamation proceedings have been issued against me or OSSL?

Many companies within the Royal Dutch Shell Group have issued defamation proceedings for alleged defamation in articles published on this website, but not even the hint of any such action on this occasion. It is not as if Shell is short of lawyers. It has an in-house army currently being reshuffled by Peter Rees QC. Michael Coates has been appointed as Shell’s new head of legal in the UK. Hans von der Linde is general counsel for Shell’s global downstream business, and currently leads a team of 300 people based in 40 countries. read more

Shell says North Sea wells will not suffer gas leaks

Screen Shot 2013-09-07 at 10.11.32

Saturday 7 September 2013

OIL giant Shell has said it is confident its North Sea wells will not fall victim to gas leaks suffered by rival operators.

The assurance came after Total said it had warned Shell its Shearwater field may be at risk from the same corrosive drilling fluids which sparked the North Sea’s worst gas leak in 20 years.
The fluids implicated in the leak at Total’s Elgin field last March, such as calcium bromide, are commonly used in such deep-sea wells.

The Elgin platform leaked gas for more than seven weeks and cost Total around £1.6 million a day in relief operations and lost income. read more

ANCHORAGE, Alaska (AP) — Critics of offshore Arctic drilling say $1.1 million in fines levied against Royal Dutch Shell for air pollution violations show that the petroleum giant is not ready to safely drill off Alaska’s northern coast.

A Shell spokesman says the fines are part of learning how to operate complex equipment in a harsh environment.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency announced Thursday that Shell subsidiaries agreed to pay fines as part of a settlement for air quality violations last year from two drill vessels or their support fleet. The Noble Discoverer worked in the Chukchi Sea and the Kulluk drilled in the Beaufort Sea for nearly two months starting in September 2012. read more

Police liquidity on Shell Corrib Gas project

Screen Shot 2013-08-28 at 00.03.05EMAIL RECEIVED FROM A MEMBER OF THE “ROSSPORT FIVE” (WITH REPLY COMMENT NOW RECEIVED FROM OSSL)

Hi, John

I am one of the Rossport 5.

I have followed the stream of detail on your web-site from OSSL in their exposé of gardai and much/many more. Thank you.

One very strange item  or dynamic , and not highlighted so far:-    OSSL have named many people and items that they delivered on behalf of Shell,  apart from the consignments of booze,  and the alleged recipients or gifters have in no case denied the veracity of the allegations. Of course it is more difficult to deny the matter when the goods are in existence – sheep pens, cattle crushers, TV sets, houses painted etc – than in the case of consumer items such as alcohol which have a habit of leaving no physical evidence. Surely on balance and objectively, it is not likely that OSSL people are truthful in all cases where physical remains exist and are then not truthful in the one case where physical evidence by its very nature is missing?. It seems to me that in a civil case the veracity of OSSL would have to be accepted. read more

(Reuters) – Compensation talks will begin in Nigeria on Monday between lawyers for Royal Dutch Shell (RDSa.L) and for 15,000 Nigerian villagers who say their livelihoods were destroyed by oil spills from pipelines operated by the company.

The Nigerians launched a suit against Shell at the High Court in London in March 2012, seeking millions of dollars in compensation for two oil spills in 2008 that polluted the waterways of the Bodo fishing communities in the Niger Delta. read more

Shell to negotiate compensation for 2008 Nigeria oil spill

Five years after a Shell pipeline burst twice, massively polluting fishing grounds in the Niger delta, the company will finally sit down on Monday with affected villagers to negotiate compensation and possibly start to clean up what some experts say was one of the largest spills in one of the world’s poorest regions.

As legal team prepares for talks, gulf between what company and impoverished villagers claim happened remains vast

Five years after a Shell pipeline burst twice, massively polluting fishing grounds in the Niger delta, the company will finally sit down on Monday with affected villagers to negotiate compensation and possibly start to clean up what some experts say was one of the largest spills in one of the world’s poorest regions.

But as Shell’s top legal team prepared to fly to Nigeria for talks in a Port Harcourt hotel, the gulf between what the $175bn (£112bn) a year company and the impoverished villagers of Bodo claim happened in 2008 remains vast. Shell admits liability for the spills and, using figures from an official inspection group, says that about 4,000 barrels of oil flooded into the mangrove swamps and creeks when its pipeline burst. read more

Fresh fears over North Sea safety after Elgin leak

Patrice de Vivies, chairman of Total UK, told Reuters he had already warned Royal Dutch Shell, which operates the neighbouring Shearwater field, that its operations could also be at risk from the problem.

An extensive programme of repairs could be needed across North Sea oil and gas operations in light of emerging evidence of causes of last year’s Elgin gas leak, experts have warned.

A corrosive drilling fluid may have been to blame for the leak at the Total-operated platform, which went on for a month and a half before being stopped and contributed to a slump in North Sea production last year .

The French energy giant is planning to “kill” and replace 10 other wells in the area in light of the lessons learnt from the Elgin accident.

Patrice de Vivies, chairman of Total UK, told Reuters he had already warned Royal Dutch Shell, which operates the neighbouring Shearwater field, that its operations could also be at risk from the problem. Shearwater, like Elgin, produces gas at high pressure and high temperatures. read more

Energy-Hungry China Struggles to Join Shale-Gas Revolution

MAOBA, China—When Royal Dutch Shell PLC began a multibillion-dollar effort to tap China shale gas a few years ago, it seemed like a can’t-miss wager. China has the world’s most extensive shale gas reserves, biggest energy market, and a government pushing for expanded gas production.

But for Shell and its state-controlled partner, China National Petroleum Corp. the reality on the ground makes its bet look riskier.

The region’s rough terrain, poor infrastructure and deeply buried gas formations present tough technical challenges. read more
