A Cry For Help! – Email from an impoverished Niger Deltan

Dear John,

I have been reading articles in the website and would want to commend you for the great job you are doing, especially in exposing the dubious activities of SHELL in Nigeria.

I am sending this email about the dangerous practices of SHELL Nigeria, and her negative impact on the Nigerian Socio-Economic situation.

Shell Nigeria is like a Government of its own, they can do and undo, their activities can derail the Nigerian economy, they are aware of this, and so, they act with impunity.

The present MD of Shell Nigeria (Mutiu Sunmonu) has a serious hold in the Nigeria Oil and Gas Industry and has successfully planted his mentees in strategic Sectors. The MD of NLNG worked in SHELL, same applies to the MD of DPR and other strategic actors in the Nigerian Oil and Gas Industry. This is tantamount to SHELL regulating SHELL, so, they can get away with all their negative practices. read more

Shell’s alleged crimes against humanity

COMMENT FROM A FORMER SHELL EMPLOYEE ON THE KIOBEL v SHELL CASE

I would like to remind your readers that the United States held its own version of the Nuremberg trials in the American Zone of what was once West Germany. The trials held at Nuremberg ended in 1946 but the US decided to continue prosecuting those whom were deemed by the US government to be (suspected) ‘war criminals’. The trials in the US Zone ended in 1949. (see the attached link w/ PDF file). None of the other major powers conducted their own versions of the Nuremberg trials.

These articles have a very interesting discussion of the history of the Nuremberg trials and the establishment of recognized international legal standards for ‘crimes against humanity’, etc. read more

Supreme Court tackles Shell suit on first day in session

By Mark Sherman

The Associated Press

WASHINGTON — The Supreme Court plunged into its new term Monday with a high-stakes dispute between businesses and human rights groups over accountability for foreign atrocities.

The next nine months hold the prospect for major rulings on affirmative action, gay marriage and voting rights.

The term that concluded in June set a high bar for drama and significance, and the new one holds considerable potential as well. Cases involving some of the most emotional issues in American life are likely to be decided after voters choose a president and new Congress next month. read more

SHAWN McCARTHY and CARRIE TAIT

OTTAWA and CALGARY — The Globe and Mail: Published

If successful, the groundbreaking legal action by the Indian band would create a major new hurdle for oil sands proponents, forcing them to work with federal and provincial governments to fully consult aboriginal communities before they get a permit to proceed. read more

Human-Rights Suits May Be Limited in Top Court Shell Case

By Greg Stohr on October 01, 2012

U.S. Supreme Court justices suggested they will shield companies from some suits alleging complicity in overseas atrocities, as the court debated how far to go in scaling back a favorite legal tool of human-rights advocates.

During arguments in Washington on accusations that two foreign-based units of Royal Dutch Shell Plc (RDSA) facilitated torture and execution in Nigeria, the justices today questioned whether American courtrooms were the proper site for such claims. The case centers on the two-century-old Alien Tort Statute. read more

Royal Dutch Shell Shuts Down Major Crude-Oil Pipeline In Nigeria Due To Fire

(RTTNews.com) – Shell Petroleum Development Company of Nigeria Limited or SPDC, a subsidiary of Royal Dutch Shell plc (RDS-A,RDSA.L,RDSB.L,RDS-B), said in a statement Sunday that it has shut down the 28-inch Bomu-Bonny Trunkline after it discovered a fire earlier in the day.

Elaborate hoax targeting the Kiobel v Shell case currently before the US Supreme Court

By John Donovan

Shell’s Arctic activities were the subject of an elaborate widely reported hoax.

Another similarly elaborate hoax is now targeting the Kiobel v Royal Dutch Shell case currently being heard at the U.S. Supreme Court.

Like the earlier hoax, it involves a fake Shell website and other deceptions with full use being made of social media such as Facebook.

The emails we received yesterday, purportedly from Shell, are printed below with working links.
