Shell woes deter others from US Arctic

Singapore charges Shell over safety lapses in refinery fire

SINGAPORE, Sept 4 | Tue Sep 4, 2012 12:47am EDT

(Reuters) – Authorities in Singapore have charged Royal Dutch Shell with safety lapses leading to a major fire last year at the Anglo-Dutch giant’s 500,000 barrels-per-day refinery in the city state.

Shell’s Bukom refinery is its biggest plant worldwide and makes up more than a third of Singapore’s capacity. The company faces a fine of up to S$500,000 ($402,000) if convicted in the case, which is to be heard by a court on Sept. 25. read more

Singapore charges Shell with safety lapses in fire

SINGAPORE–Singapore’s government has charged Royal Dutch Shell PLC RDS.A +0.27% for safety lapses that led to a major fire at the Anglo-Dutch oil company’s 500,000 barrel-a-day refinery in the city state last year.

Singapore’s Ministry of Manpower filed a charge against Shell on Aug. 31 for an offence under the Workplace Safety and Health Act for the lapses in safety, the ministry said in a statement emailed to Dow Jones on Tuesday. The case will be heard in the Subordinate Courts on Sept. 25. The company faces a fine of up to 500,000 Singapore dollars (US$401,700) for the breach if convicted, according to the statement. read more

Royal Dutch Shell Plc (RDSA) closed an oil pipeline in Nigeria after detecting a leak, Lagos-based PM News reported on its website, citing a company spokesman.

The leak on a line connecting an oil well with the company’s Nembe Creek 2 flowstation in Nigeria’s southern Rivers state was discovered on Aug. 29, PM News reported yesterday, citing Precious Okolobo, a Shell spokesman.

Shell was investigating the source of the leak, which is not thought to have had much impact on production, PM News said, citing Okolobo. read more

Shell ready to drill in Alaska after receiving green light-CEO

ISTANBUL, Sept 4 | Tue Sep 4, 2012 4:16am EDT

(Reuters) – Royal Dutch Shell is ready to start exploring for oil in Alaska after receiving the green light, Chief Executive Peter Voser told a news conference in Turkey’s capital Ankara on Tuesday.

The Environmental Protection Agency said last week Shell, which has spent about $4.5 billion on its effort to drill Arctic oil, would soon get a temporary air permit to operate a drilling rig offshore Alaska.

Shell assessing Black Sea oil exploration with Turkey’s TPAO

(Reuters) – Royal Dutch Shell (RDSa.L) is assessing oil exploration and production opportunities in the Black Sea with Turkish state-owned oil firm TPAO, Shell Chief Executive Peter Voser said on Tuesday.

Voser was speaking at a news conference in Ankara with Turkish Energy Minister Taner Yildiz. Voser was also set to meet Turkey’s Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan.

Last November, TPAO signed an accord with Shell for hydrocarbon exploration and production in the Mediterranean and southeastern Turkey. read more

Foreign Firms Most Affected by a U.S. Law Barring Bribes

A law intended to prohibit the payment of bribes to foreign officials by United States businesses has produced more than $3 billion in settlements. But a list of the top companies making these settlements is notable in one respect: its lack of American names.

The companies that have reached the biggest settlements under the law, known as the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act, include Siemens, the German engineering giant; Daimler, the maker of Mercedes-Benz vehicles; Alcatel-Lucent, the French telecommunications company; and the JGC Corporation, a Japanese consulting company. The lone American company in the top 10 is KBR, the former Kellogg Brown & Root, a subsidiary of Halliburton, the Texas oil services company. As a group, they have paid nearly $3.2 billion in settlements. read more
