By Joseph O’Leary

NEW YORK, July 9 | Mon Jul 9, 2012 12:52pm EDT

(Reuters) – Energy company Royal Dutch Shell, with a 28.1 percent increase in revenue in 2011, ended Wal-Mart Stores’ two-year reign atop Fortune Magazine’s Global 500 list, the magazine’s yearly ranking of the world’s 500 largest corporations, which was released on Monday.

The Netherlands-based company took first place with more than $484 billion in revenues and $30.9 billion in profits, a 53.6 percent increase from 2010. It continued to perform well into early 2012, boosting its earnings for the first quarter of 2012 by 11 percent, the magazine said. read more

SHELL GEELONG REFINERY AND DIANA NEWMAN

SHELL GEELONG REFINERY AND DIANA NEWMAN

In April 2012 we reported that Shell had agreed to investigate alleged IP theft at the Geelong Refinery in Australia.

The issue at the heart of this matter is the same one that led to our falling out with Shell nearly 20 years ago: Shell stealing ideas – in this case allegedly from a Shell employee, Diana Newman.

The following are extracts from an emailed update received earlier today.

Hi John,

We have heard that our refinery is going to roll out, using stolen IP from Diana Newman, conversions to all its heat ex-changers, but not too soon because of the feelings within the refinery to a management unable to honor Shells core values, codes of practice, ethical behavior or morals. The management are hoping that time will cover their theft of Diana’s outstanding invention and the ill feeling towards a shifty management team. They continue to pretend that Diana was part of rather than the actual inventor of an outstanding breakthrough. read more

PTT Exploration Extends Offer for Cove Energy Until July 13

By Kari Lundgren – Jul 9, 2012 8:02 AM GMT+0100

PTT Exploration and Production Pcl, the Thai company battling Royal Dutch Shell Plc (RDSA) to take over Cove Energy Plc (COV), extended its offer for the East Africa-focused explorer to July 13.

State-controlled PTT has received acceptances from 0.25 percent of Cove shareholders for its agreed 1.22 billion-pound ($1.9 billion) offer. Its bid has also been approved by Kenya’s competition authority, according to a statement today.

Cove owns an 8.5 percent stake in Mozambique’s Rovuma Area 1, where recoverable natural gas amounting to more than six times the U.K.’s existing reserves has been discovered. PTT’s latest offer of 240 pence a share for Cove topped Shell’s 220- pence bid. read more

Oilsands must prove impact being reduced, say groups

They want Alberta to demonstrate that recommendations are being followed

By Bob Weber, The Canadian Press July 9, 2012

Environmentalists are trying to force the Alberta government to show it’s followed through on previous recommendations to reduce the impact of oilsands mines before any more projects are approved.

The Oilsands Environmental Coalition has asked the regulatory panel examining Shell’s proposed Jackpine expansion to check into the status of dozens of recommendations by previous panels.

Those recommendations were conditions under which previous oilsands projects were given the OK, but there’s no information on whether they’ve been lived up to, said Simon Dyer of the Pembina Institute. read more

The company at the top of Fortune’s Global 500 list has made headlines for its push to drill in Arctic waters. It’s been a controversial plan, in part, because a spill in cold water near Alaska would likely prove difficult to clean. Shell is pushing forward, hoping to begin drilling this July for some of the estimated 90 billion barrels of recoverable oil in the Arctic. Over the next 10-20 years, the company expects oil from the Arctic to be its largest source of crude.

In the short-term, Shell has done well, boosting its earnings for the first quarter of 2012 by 11%, compared to the previous year, to $7.7 billion. Part of the increase in earnings comes from Shell’s long-term projects that have just started producing: namely, a gas-to-liquids plant in Qatar and projects in the Canadian oil sands. -– Shelley DuBois, writer-reporter read more
