Shell Most Targeted By Activists Finds Global NGO Monitor

Arun Sudhaman 29 Jun 2012

LONDON–Shell has become the brand most targeted by activist groups, according to a digital service that tracks NGO campaigns worldwide.

Sigwatch, which monitors more than 4,000 activist groups globally, is expanding its service via a new website that provides a greater wealth of data regarding the threats posed to businesses by NGOs, and the issues that are sparking pressure.

The company has found that Shell is the company most criticised by activists in 2012. Shell has also seen the largest rise in activist criticism compared to 2011, along with Monsanto, Apple and Bank of America. Companies that have seen NGO attacks decline markedly over the same period include BP, Holcim and BHP Billiton. read more

Shell rigs and support vessels Alaska-bound; wins 2 legal issues

Week of July 01, 2012

A caravan of ships departed the Seattle-area on June 27 en route to Alaska, where they appear increasingly likely to conduct an offshore exploration campaign for Shell.

The Kulluk and Noble Discoverer drilling rigs and a fleet of support vessels left Seattle, Wash., around 6:30 a.m. Alaska time, bound for Dutch Harbor. Upon their arrival, the ships will wait for open water before continuing to the Chukchi and Beaufort Seas.

“The journey north marks the beginning of another historic offshore exploration program in Alaska,” the company said in a statement. “We look forward to adding to our long, successful history in the Beaufort and Chukchi Seas; providing jobs and verifying what could prove to be an extremely valuable natural resource base for Alaska and the nation.” read more

Shell eyes Mackenzie Valley Canol shale oil play

HOUSTON, June 29 06/29/2012 By OGJ editors

Shell Canada Energy has taken a farmout from MGM Energy Corp., Calgary, to earn an interest in MGM’s 466B exploration license in the Central Mackenzie Valley of Canada’s Northwest Territories by funding the drilling of one or two wells in the Devonian Canol shale oil play.

Shell has the option to terminate the farmout if MGM doesn’t receive timely regulatory approval to drill the first well but will earn 75% interest in EL466B and become operator if it drills and completes both wells.

Shell will earn 37.5% interest after drilling a vertical well, which could be drilled as early as the winters of 2012-13 or 2013-14. The second well would be a horizontal penetration. read more

Nigeria says arrests oil pipeline bomber

YENAGOA, Nigeria | Fri Jun 29, 2012 3:56pm EDT

(Reuters) – Nigerian authorities said on Friday they had arrested the leader of a network of crude oil thieves in the Niger Delta responsible for several pipeline bombings against oil majors including Shell and ENI.

Nigeria is the world’s eighth biggest exporter of crude oil but thieves siphon off around a fifth of its output by drilling into pipelines, blasting them open or diverting crude at loading stations, sometimes with the connivance of security forces. read more

Gazprom to study LNG output expansion for Asia

By Vladimir Soldatkin and Melissa Akin

MOSCOW | Fri Jun 29, 2012 10:13pm IST

(Reuters) – Gazprom said it had agreed to a feasibility study to expand Russia’s only liquefied natural gas plant, a victory for its partner Royal Dutch Shell (RDSa.L), which has urged the state-run gas monopoly to seize a market opportunity in the Pacific.

Chief Executive Alexei Miller told a news conference on Friday that Gazprom would do a preliminary front-end engineering and design (pre-FEED) study on expanding the plant, on the Pacific island of Sakhalin, from 10 million tonnes of super-cooled liquefied natural gas per year to 15 million. read more

Shell talks on Shtokman, Sakhalin unconnected: Gazprom

MOSCOW | Fri Jun 29, 2012 3:30pm BST

(Reuters) – Talks with Royal Dutch Shell (RDSa.L) on a potential role for the Anglo-Dutch major in the Shtokman gas field consortium are not linked to talks on expanding the Sakhalin-2 gas liquefaction plant, Gazprom’s head of export said on Friday.

“They are not connected,” Alexander Medvedev told reporters after the company’s annual meeting in Moscow.

More on Poo Gas

More on Poo Gas from the same source as the article: Why can’t those geniuses at Shell think of something like this?

John

I decided to play a few number games…

Consider the scenario where 1 cu ft. of Poo Gas methane can be generated from the average human’s daily discharge of Loo-Poo. There are roughly 7 billion people on this planet, so we humans would contribute 7 billion cu. ft  (7 bcf or about 0.2 billion cu. meters) of Poo Gas to the atmosphere on a daily basis. That is 7 bcf of methane. In 10 days that would be about 70 bcf, and in 100 days that would be 700 bcf. In 365 days we get about 2.5 tcf of methane. read more

Scarcely a whimper as Shell votes for unification

Financial Times: Scarcely a whimper as Shell votes for unification

Wednesday 29 June 2005

By Ian Bickerton in Scheveningen

Dutch shareholders bade farewell to nearly a century of history in less than 45 minutes on Tuesday, overwhelmingly approving the unification of Royal Dutch and Shell, the two arms of the energy group.

Shortly afterwards shareholders in London also backed the unification plan.

The proposal prompted barely half-a-dozen gentle inquiries in the Netherlands, from elderly investors seeking reassurance that the company would continue to have its headquarters in the Netherlands and that they would be able to ask questions in Dutch at its annual meeting. read more

MOTIVA REFINERY DEBACLE: Caustic – the same thing that blew up Norco. Unbelievable

Might as well melt it all down and start over…

CAUSTIC COMMENTS ON MOTIVA REFINERY DEBACLE

FIRST COMMENT (FROM SHELL BLOG)

Re: Motiva Refinery Debacle – Unbelievable. Lock-out, Tag-out, the most basic safety rule, strikes again.

The same thing that blew-up Piper Alpha. Caustic – the same thing that blew up Norco. Unbelievable.

And Caustic doesn’t just pit stainless, it causes cracks in stress areas. They will have to use advanced ultrasound techniques on every millimeter of hundreds of miles of piping because a hidden crack will propagate and cause a failure days or years in the future.

Might as well melt it all down and start over. read more

Classic International concert REAPS what Shell sponsorship sows.

LONDON RISING TIDE PROTEST AT SHELL GREENWASHING

Hot on the heels of their appearance at the Shell vs. Bodo case at the High Court, activists from London Rising Tide, staged a protest in and outside the Royal Festival Hall on Saturday 23rd June, highlighting the greenwashing of shell’s tardy image through cultural sponsorship in their ‘shell classic international’ festival at the southbank centre.

At dusk prior to the Symphony Orchestra of Venezuela concert, activists gathered near their south bank target, and prepared their  ‘Shell Hell’ face masks and grim reaper costumes. Shortly before seven, they formed a procession and swiftly made their way to the entrance of the Royal Festival Hall. read more
